they should really get them to open for Jawbreaker at the anthem
What's funny is I suggested this to someone over the weekend but with GlassJaw as the opener. Either way, a Jawbox reunion is exciting. Lots of good shows getting announced today!
How are these two bands actually different bands? I know nothing about them....I had always assumed there was just one Jaw* band.
One is a power trio from Oakland, CA that started as more traditional punk and grew into terrific songwriters that injected emo while slowing the tempos down (with magnificent results, I love their last 2 LPs) before emo was...well, icky. The other is a 4-piece post-punk (and more traditional indie) band from DC (yay) who wrote some really, really well-crafted and beautiful songs ("Savory", "Iodine", "Reel") but still had the volume to make the music even more visceral. Both bands are actually very intelligent, underrated, and worthy of learning more about because of their depth and ability to convey feelings. I find the "Dear You" LP by Jawbreaker to be a cult classic that never really was appreciated and understood. It really spoke to me when it was released and I was disappointed that it didn't do better. Both bands got lost in the post-Nirvana 1990's shuffle of angry and posery post-grunge schlock, and I'm happy that I'll get to see both again this year.
