For anyone with an acerbic tongue towards Sleater Kinney, I just caution you that SK means a LOT to women, queer folk, etc. It might not be your cup of tea, but there's no need to trash them just because it's not your brew, and some might take offense to your opinion as veering towards something downright disrespectful.
You all are literally turning "SK is fine, here's an album you should definitely check out by them but they're not the be-all-and-all-end-of-music like some people think" into a hate crime.
No one has said SK is bad yet in this convo and yet multiple people are pushing back against this strawman. Do you all actually read the posts you're responding to or do you just make up things to be aggrieved about? (And yes, the prior sentence can go directly into the taglines for the forum thread.) I have come to expect this from the hoi polloi of this forum but I expect better out of you, Bearman, a usually reasonable person who, for a time, read things outloud for a living so I know you are capable of decipherment.
I think he may be responding to what I said:
Of course you're supposed to like them. You lose your indie card if you don't. Girl band, check. Lesbians in band, check. From Portland area, check.
Never mind that their squalling voices and untuned instruments are ear poison. Pitchfork says you have to like them. I envy you that you've never heard them.I hate that people like them *because* they're women and *because* one of them is queer. I get it that a certain subset of women and queers might latch onto them because of a tribal mentality (though I'm not a fan of tribal mentality...like Depeche Mode said "People are People"). What I really think is stupid is straight men giving them "cool" points because of their gender and sexual preferences. Maybe that doesn't happen, but there's a perception that it's the case.
I would hate their music regardless of their gender or sexual preference. I would hate some of their fans for my previously stated, possibly imagined, reasons. A lot of hate to go around, but not a crime. I wouldn't hate them personally. I've never met them, so don't have an opinion.
