why does every other person hate dar?
« on: March 31, 2005, 03:43:00 pm »
i love the place.  the staff rule, unless it's widespread panic, and then they lose all control of everything, and the sound is worse than what other places in the area?  i can only think of a handful of venues that the sound might be better:  birch, warner, wolftrap, and maybe state theatre, but the state is way pushing it, and i can't even begin to count how many places other than dar did the sound totally suck.

if dar sucks so much, why do acts that have played there before keep popping back up there, time and time again?

soon kali dar rule the world.

Because DAR fills a niche for size that no other venue fills.  Next step up -- Patriot Center.  EEeeewwwwwww.

You named a lot of places with better sound there, and I don't know why you left 9:30 off.  Black Cat is more sketcy -- sometimes great, sometimes sucky...  But we're talking medium-large size venues, anyway.  And you named most around town (town being D.C.) as having better sound than DAR.

because it has seats
because you can't drink while you watch the show
 because you can't smoke there
because its just too classy looking for a rock show

you're right.  nine thirty does have a killer sound system, and yes, the black cat can be spotty at times, but i just can't understand the hatred of it.  everybody always seems to go back on the, "oh the sound sucks there" excuse, and i know that's not true, from having seen so many shows there.  good lord people, the almighty pixies played on it's stage!!  i beleive it's because the place has the word constitution in it and because it's in d.c.  you just know how people in washington always want to fuck up the constitution.   :D

and...
because the staff has been rude to me numerous times
because the atm was broken and there was a no readmittance rule so that i could go and get money out at another atm and return to buy overpriced beers to guzzle in the atmosphere-less beer garden that reminds me of the common-area in my college dorm
because you can't stand up during shows
because bands really don't sound that great there (the sound of most bands is completely swallowed up and is especially drowned out if you're high on the balcony)

the staff of anyplace can be rude.  especially if one deserves it.

you obviously been to the wrong shows at dar, because we all stand and party like there is no tommorrow at the shows we go to.  we don't need no education.

and quit sitting so high up and maybe you can hear.  the same rule applies at patriot

and somehow i find i pay the equal "overpriced" amount for beer at any show i go to at any event.  solution:  drink water . . . or get fucked up before the show.  yee hah.

too classy???  that's a good one.  i guess you enjoy seeing shows at the velvet or even better, the armory.

and smoking will kill you and everyone else around you that breathes your shit.

I've only been there once (for an anti-landmines benefit with Willie/Emmylou/Steve Earle/Lucinda/sheryl crow) but these are all reasons I have a very positive memory of the place (not to mention the show was killer, and cost only about $25 per ticket)

why would not drinking whilst watching the show matter?  i can see why one would not like it if you couldnt drink, but why would that make the show better, especially if there are seats (eliminates the beer spilling effect, which in like 300 shows has happened maybe 5 times to me)

If people aren't able to bring beer to their seats, they're less likely to get up and buy beer, get up to piss, repeat cycle.

I don't care for all that unneccessary climbing over me by strangers during a show bullshit. Sit down and enjoy the music.

seriously, sonick...what's with all the old farts on the board anymore?

i'd rather go to the lincoln theater than to dar. it's also seated but the acoustics are 100x better. and no...i have not encountered rude employees at other venues in this area (including the lincoln).

i refused to buy tix for morissey and the pixies because of the venue alone. dar is a pisshole.

You would never go back to a concert venue because you once "had an issue with one of the staff"?

Seems like you'd end up cheating yourself out of a lot of good shows.

I like what Josh Rouse had to say about this (though it sounds like he was wasted when he typed this out):

i just want to reply to the those complaining about the seated venues. if you dont want to sit then you can stand up! i requested seated shows because this is what i prefer, i don't like some big dude bumping into me with his beer every 5 seconds, and to be honest, i want to sit and be able to actually see the band perform. personally, after standing in one place for an hour, my legs start to get tired and my attention drifts. it's not like we are a rock group and everyone is going nuts, it's music for listening....... and dancing in the seats if you like! hah!
