just really surprised so many caps fans were so bummed to see hunter go. his record was pretty mediocre and publicly humiliated their best player

His record was mediocre? He single-handedly (and with Holtby) turned around a sinking ship about to miss the playoffs and took the top seeded team to game 7 in the second round. Any thank GOD he "publicly humiliated" his best player. Why do you refuse to admit Alex is the problem? Alex got his way this season: he got Bruce fired. If you're not going to commit to playing defense on a playoff-caliber level (i.e. actually trying, blocking a few shots and not skating around in the defensive zone with your head up your ass), you don't deserve to play, PERIOD. Alex refuses to play defense and you MUST play defense to win in the playoffs.

Fuck Alex and fuck Ted for coddling him. Fuck you, too.
Alex Ovechkin isn't the problem... The problem is the team has failed to find a balance between defense and offense. Their offense was shut down when they were a juggernaut, and when they turned to all defense they BARELY had offense. Are you going to get mad when Jeff Schultz doesn't perform in the offensive zone? Ovechkin is a fucking winger and a powerhouse at that position. While I disagreedw ith only playing him for 13 minutes in a fucking playoff game, it lit a fire under his ass and he WAS diving in front of pucks towards the end of the run there and was being more defensively responsible. What about Brooks Laich? What about Marcus Johansson? He led the team in goals in the playoffs AND the regular season and HE is the problem? They just need to fnid a balance, they aren't going to make the playoffs next yaer if they're playing 1 goal games all year in teh regular season and having to block 20+ shots. They're still incredibly offensively gifted and have shown that they can get defensive grit with the same bunch.

Ovie is their best player.. the team should take advantage of that fact and build around him.

Caveat: I know nothing about ice hockey or the caps.

Adam Oates is the new Caps coach.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capitals-insider/post/reports-adam-oates-to-be-next-capitals-coach/2012/06/26/gJQA9VVX4V_blog.html?hpid=z3

So they are hiring the ex-Captains in order.  On the positive Adam Oates was a very good player  and lead us to the cup.  On the bad sidehe coached in Jersey where the trap was the law.  Quite  a difference as a player in one regard, sportmanship.  Hunter was the dirtiest player in the league. Oates was a lady byng finalist many a time.   Oates was great at making the players around him better.    Hopefully he can do the same as a coach.

Bryan and Terry Murray and Ron Wilson must have turned Ted down.

You know why Ted likes up-tempo hockey? Sells regular season tickets.

sometimes you have to change the rules..

I think soccer should do something about the offside rule.. all too often players are on side, score, and the goal is invalidated because the lineman makes the wrong call....its hard enough to score as it is..

look at American Football..unless I'm wrong at the beginning teams scored primarily with their feet and the forward pass wasn't even used...

The offside rule in 'football' has been modified many times. Besides, there's just as many offside goals allowed as onside goals disallowed. Doesn't make it right, but it is what it is. Some University in the UK researched the officials and the offside rule and came to the conlcusion it's physically impossible to see everything the AR has to be able to see to make the call....retar'ded eh?

As for runny-catchy...well. It's not a sport, it's an entertainment event like WWF.

Pretty obvious now Ted is in the business of coddling 8. I'll eat my words if they reach the Conf Finals next year.

Well since they have only reached the conference finals twice im their entire history what is the point of your post?   Last time they made it Oates was the guy leading the team as a player.  And if you are paying a guy like Ovechkin for the next ten years or so you probably want a coach who actually uses him.

Not speaking from a position of great knowledge of the team having been out of the loop for years, but your comment doesn't make sense to me. It's not the coaches job to select a team based on how much each player cost. Or at least it shouldn't be.

I'm disapointed they didn't give Hunter a full season to mold 'his' team.

It was definitely Hunter who didn't want another season. George has come out and said he wanted to keep Hunter around. I'm also bummed he didn't stay though. I don't think he would have made use of the offense though.

Of course a coach has to choose a style of play that uses the players that he has available the best.  Backstrom and Ovechkin  have huge contracts and are going to be with the team longer than any coach. Hunter was forcing a style of play that was fitting for him as a player not good for the players that he had.

Look at the maryland football team this year.  They had offensive players that were best suited for a passing game.  Yet the coach forced a running game down their throat.  How did the players react.  What was their record.

Backstrom and Ovechkin are going to be on the team.  What do you think the reaction would be next year when Ovechkin and Backstrom start to revolt against the coach?  Anyway Hunter is gone and his record was worst than Bodreau's this past season with the Caps.  Last year the Caps swept the rangers. this year  they lost to the rangers.  And in the series it appeared to me that the strategy was to lose by one goal.

Anyway his style of hockey was unwatchable.  Eventually fans will stop coming if he stayed as the coach.

They didn't sweep the Rangers, they won 4-1. Regardless, we've had the Rangers number the past couple of seasons in the playoffs, I had high hopes going into that series. Even if they were the number 1 seed I was hoping the new defensive attitude we had, paired with our past experience, that we would beat the Rangers. Game 7 was insanely disappointing.

McPhee was on DC101 this morning and he was talking about more uptempo hockey, he said he didn't like the system that Hunter brought in. I agree. Then Oates was on 106.7 after that and it was nice to hear his perspective on coming in. Really excited for the season opener! only 108 more days?
