So... I learned the official definition of "Merkin" last night and I'm wondering why anyone would name their beer "Velvet Merkin."
so you made it to the Pizza Paradiso event
not going to share what merkin means?

I did not... but I watched bits and pieces of the Oscars and someone made a joke about a "merkin."

mer·kin

/ˈmərkən/

noun

noun: merkin; plural noun: merkins

an artificial covering of hair for the pubic area.

The original Velvet Merkin was made solely for the brewery?s tasting room, starting in 2004. ?I always wanted to make an oatmeal stout, and so I started making single-turn batches for the tasting room, just for fun,? Brynildson said.

He added, ?I came up with this fanciful name, because I thought it was hilarious. I never thought it would leave the tasting room walls. When we decided to bottle it as a fall seasonal release about four years ago, everyone got cold feet, so we changed the name to Velvet Merlin.?

But the Velvet Merkin name was surreptitiously resurrected by Brynildson and the brewing team after they began aging batches of the beer in bourbon barrels at around the same time.

Pretty small operation, just 15 barrel batches.

15 barrels is on the average-to-bigger side for a new brewery.  many start with a 7 or 10 barrel system.  both 3 Stars and DC Brau have 15 barrel brew houses.

So made it out to New District Brewing Company again and they are producing some interesting stuff
they also are doing so well they picked up two more 25 barrel fermenters...putting capacity at 80 barrels!
they are open Fridays now too (so only fri/sat for now)

also really keeping up with new and interesting batches
Lost Bog Man Ale- A supremely pale ale featuring smoked peat and woodruff. 5.5% ABV
Follow Your Horizons Porter- A full bodied porter dark chocolate in color featuring cherries and chocolate malt. 6% ABV

both were good, but not sure I would have them again over their other superior selections

Saw a bald guy with a wife and two young daughters at Aslin Sunday. Thought maybe it was Sidehatch. Oh yeah, the beer was great.

Also hit the Firestone Walker event at Paradiso. Awesome.

Also just scored a bottle of 2016 Sucaba. Almost got a second one, but i had to go pick up my sick kid and skip the beer store.

Enough to raise an eyebrow, Thursday night at Gillys:

Custom Gilly's Firkin
Heavy Seas Loose Cannon IPA Firkin'd with Citra and Equinox hops, White Oak chips, dried grapefruit, vanilla, and a blend of tropical fruits!

plus a dual tap takeover from Maine Beer Company and Heavy Seas.

(Kick the keg specials tonight)

Bottles on the black market apparently can sell for as much as $1,000.
so craft beer needs to be sold on the black market?!?

I know there are many here that are pro-scapling, I assume the same goes for beer

I'm assuming you meant, "anti" scalping?
