Concert Posters
« on: January 07, 2004, 03:54:00 pm »
Related to the discussion a few weeks ago about concert posters.

The guy over at Shame of Rock n Roll [http://theshameofrockandroll.com/] posted  a few photos I had sent in of some stuff I bought from him framed up. [he's a super cool guy btw, he puts a sticker on the packaging for each poster that he sends out showing what he was listening to while he packed your stuff].

Anyway  - here are the links to 2 I have up. I'll probably get abused for the bands, but I really dig the posters. I have had the White Stripes for a while now:

I saw the Datsuns show with the Sights & I think it's really just a great piece of graphic art - especially the reflection in the glasses.

Completely cool, grotty.  I get all wound up about needing to love the band if I'm gonna hang a poster.  That Datsuns poster is great, though.

I have a cool Siouxsie I need to get framed -- you've inspired me!

I have very few of bands that I don't totally love. I just thought that the Datsuns was very cool & it was even "user friendly" enough for me to hang in my work office.

I've been eyeing that White Stripes poster for awhile now.  It seems like there are different versions, one being smaller than the other and unsigned/unnumbered.  Also, some include the Datsuns, some don't.

It is a big one - at least 3' X 2'; signed from a series of 300. Hmmm...ironic that I have the Datsuns on both posters.

Here's the one I really want to get now, but it's proving very elusive:

Have you tried to e-mail Patent Pending?  I've heard that the artists sometimes hold back a handful of prints and will sell them -- albeit at a premium.

I've been searching for these two:

I'll check out that recommendation.

Both of those will (would) look great. One thing I did that made a big difference is that I used a black matte with a colored edge that compliments the dominant color in the poster. You can see the orange in the matte edge in the Datsuns poster if you look close.

That  At The Drive-In  would look sweet with either a blue or orange edge.

i just tend to get most of my posters from ebay, and focus on just a few bands like pavement, gbv and luna.  although i think everyone should eventually have one kozik poster.

this was in the comments section by the guy who designed the whigs poster - looks like you might be out of luck unless it crops up on ebay

"Yeah, that's basically it... I had cut my hand with an X-acto earlier that day. I was carrying a stack of magazines or something over to the photocopier to make this poster and and it just hit me - must make Band Aid into big poster. I peeled it off my hand and blew it up. The blood stain is real and everything. If I was really punk I woulda dumped my own blood into the ink.

I would LOVE to trade with you guys but I have exactly 2 of these + one that is screened on old piece of cardboard which is hanging in my basement. I stupidly gave away so much of my early stuff to friends or whomever asked that I'm down to two or three copies of much of it. I'll trade for other things though... jeffk@subpop.com"

You made me go back & pull out the flat stack I have of framing candidates.

 I've got this Kozik:
  http://shop.fkozik.com/customer/product.php?productid=106&cat=&page=1

It looks much better 'live'. It's created to look like the old black light posters - even has a felty feel.

I talked to Kozik a bit last year during SXSW. All the other artists there were treating him like royalty.

I saw that    :(   - I'm not expecting to find it anytime soon. Seems there are others posting on there that covet it also.

I've lurked on the gigposter forums.  Kozik posts regularly and they treat him like royalty ther as well.  I'm not too keen on his style, but respect what he's done for the business.  Apparently, he stopped making posters and only does toys now.

There will be another Flatstock at SXSW this year.

Bede -- This GBV poster is kinda cool.  GBV and Built to Spill seem to be the darlings of gig artists.

by the way grotty - beautiful framing jobs - I did my first last week but kept it simple with no matting
