Three cheers for Bob Mould and his band. He makes me afraid not to turn 50.

Great show!  I think he is now 51!  His voice was pretty rough after the show though.  Hasn't been singing and touring that much. 

Loved the Bob Mould show.  (And Loved the free ticket some dude gave me on the way in 2 minutes before the show).

heard the first five songs and left because the vocals were completely drowned out and it was too loud, even wearing earplugs...

Really? Where were you standing? I was 10 feet back from speaker on stage right... could hear the vocals just fine.. there was a brief spell where the microphone for Jim went out so you could not hear him but it was just on part of one song.. it was fixed..

No doubt they were loud and used a distorted sound but not sure who would have expected differently.. my friend emailed me during the day about how it would be a good show for earplugs.


Sorry people did not enjoy it as much as I did.. for me it was wonderful but I can only speak for myself!

I think I did identify some issues with the show though so it is not like I am saying it was perfect or something

I was right in front of the soundboard...I did see a lot of people dancing and having a good time though...

I wonder if possibly people who were up front benefited from fact that speakers are high up and maybe some of the sound goes past you?

I don't know how else to explain that to me every word Jim sang was clear and yet people say they couldn't hear or in some cases even tell what song was being played...

Like I said , going over my video a bit last night it is definitely distorted but more so because the camera mic can't handle that level of volume ...

I was to the left of the soundboard...i thought they sounded good for the most part.  My only disappointment was the fact that the setlist looks like its exactly the same every night.  And the chick from the Vandelles singing Just Like Honey was a bit distracting moving all around like that, heh

so that is where she was from.. ok...

the main problem with her, aside from her singing and dancing, was she completely missed her entry cue and was about 5 very painful seconds too late.. there is a youtube video of it someone already posted

I was about 10ft in fromt of the left side of the soundboard, just in line with or slightly to the right of the left hanging speaker array and it sounded great while I was there.  The vocals were clear, and all songs were easily recognized.  From a crowd perspective it seemed great for a sold out show.  There were 2 chicks near me with room to dance their asses off the entire show.  I stepped out of my spot twice to grab a drink and managed to get back to the exact same spot the first time.  The second time I could have but it would have required a few excuseme's so I just parked it closer to the back just to the left of the sound board where oddly I could hear the vocals much less than my previous spot a mere 10ish feet away.  All in all I loved it, was exactly what I was hoping for, I was still grinning a bit when i got home.

I do wish I brought my ear plugs along, I have  a bit of ringing - more than I have ever experienced when forgetting my plugs.

say what was the previous JAMC show in DC? Did they play in 2007 or was it for the Munki tour in the late 1990s?

I never saw them during their initial run, so I was pretty psyched on the show: great setlist I thought, crowd that was into it and some serious noise.  But then again, that's what I was hoping to get...I left with no complaints.

And how odd is it, after years of wasting my life posting on this board, that during the show I thought "huh, I wonder if Samantha is here".

Maybe Hutch and I went to a different show than some of you.

I can't imagine how you can complain about Jesus & Mary Chain being distorted.  Maybe it's a sign of our clean-cut-pop times.  My only regret of the night was that they were too crisp sounding and I wished there was more distortion.  And I recognized every song immediately and had to stop myself from singing along.

I was in the front row against the stage and I had plenty of room.  I was thinking to myself that this was the least sold-out-like sold out show I'd ever been to.  The people in the second row even allowed those of us in the front row room to dance.  (The photographers were a little annoying but they left early.)

I didn't think it was too loud, either, I thought it was perfect; no earplugs.

And the song selection was excellent.  Well balanced, I thought.  Of course I would have liked to hear more but if I had my way they would have played their entire discography.

I will admit that I was just happy to see them, as someone who is too young to have seen them back in the day.  I had just always wanted to see them and I'm grateful that I got to...I did not have high expectations as I know full well what reunion bands are like.  But they sounded true to themselves so I couldn't complain.  I hope they don't put out a new album just in case I don't like the new album...it's not like they don't have plenty in their repertoire already.

My complaint about the 9:30 Club is that I got shoved by two security staph at the end of the show.  I understand they were chasing someone, but it seems they could have used an arm swipe to move me to the side...I don't THINK I look so sturdy as to necessitate a two handed push in the back.  Jeesh.

I always get a good chuckle when Hutch quotes music writers and acts as if it's proof of anything more than the fact that Hutch reads too many music rags.

It's true, I'm the biggest fan of Psychocandy, I think Darklands is very good but I don't listen to it much, and I think the rest is average and unremarkable. Fact is, the first line in any JAMC bio is not going to be "the band that released the classic album 'Munki'"

True, but it is also not going to be "The band that released the classic album Psychocandy and fell off the cliff.."

It just is not... You can read Ira Robbins in the NEw Trouser Press reviews or anywhere else.. JAMC was a seminal band and not because of only their first album. They had a very strong period until about 1992 or so... Dozens and dozens of singles in all kinds of formats and dozens of b-sides etc.. heck they have two b-sides compilations just for that period and they are good (Barbed Wire kisses, Sound of Speed)..


Now maybe to people that didn't grow up on them they are just the Psychocandy band that recorded that song used in that bill murray movie... but that is just for people that really aren't big fans of the band.

Actually the Ira Robbins is in the New Music Tourser Press or what have you.. .I own a copy.. its great reading..and very funny.... I'm too lazy to go get it but later I'll post a paragraph on Soundgarden
Definitely dangerous to say "because all the critics love u in New York..."
I wouldn't say that critical opinion is always right  but I guess what I'm saying is that JAMC is not a band wherein the consensus is that they had one bangin' album and put out tosh for the rest of their career... a solid body of work is more like it.. Now maybe the young uns who sell out BRMC -total JAMC impostors- quicker than their teachers..well maybe they go back and are too lazy to listen to more than one JAMC record so they pick Psychocandy...but that is just plain lazy and doesn't really tell you anything.

I also think that these days music criticism is sort of superseded by rate your music. On that site everyone gets to be a critic and you can at least get to see what people n general ithink of the different albums.. I can't recall the ratings for JAMC but I'm pretty sure there are a few albums that do very well for them.

I bought the import You Trip Me Up ep in 1985 and then Psychocandy lp the week it was released in the US, so not everyone who disagrees with you is a dingbat new fan.

you may be right. i suggest you guys made a mistake in going last night then.. wait for the 30th anniversary of psychocandy tour where they will play the entire album or something!

Anyways point taken.. shame on JAMC for playing a cross section of their career instead of concentrating on Psychocandy. Heck, I don't know why they kept recording after Psychocandy.
