Glad I saw it but found the Beta Band show a bit underwhelming. I expected some more spontaneity. There wasn’t any energy to it.

was really a fantastic show
sound was super crisp, attendance was at the perfect level...about 85% full

quite the boardie conclave too, hatch, hutch, vas (although I didn't see him and was supposed to be jules), bearman, yada, I think even OG bordie Azagh was in attendance as well

I do credit hutch for breaking the tension between the two of us

I am currently not drinking (nothing to do with the Iggy show), so enjoyed the kombucha on tap but that did turn in to quite the adventure. First went to the coffee stand, who sent me to the food food bar, who then sent me to bar across the other side, to then get sent to the top floor bar to get my fill. Only gripe is $8 for a non alcoholic drink seems steep to me, but it does cost $5 in the store so I guess really not unreasonable, the space in me was grumbling

Also, not consuming the cheeba right now and this show really seemed like would be a perfect fit for that kind of activity

the DJ who opened up was quite fun and was great to see him actually playing 45s  genre spanning no doubt, I think there was even some classical mixed in there

Hutch thinks it was one of the band members?  He did have a hoodie, facemask and ski googles on, so that's possible

They were really tight, looking like they were really having a good time up there
the video that started off the night was hysterical

few times in the show it was a percussive maelstrom with all four members banging on something
but damn if it didn't sound soo good
I loved the jews harp!

vas did get a few hot shots 2 songs at the end

top tier rocktober show

Glad I saw it but found the Beta Band show a bit underwhelming. I expected some more spontaneity. There wasn’t any energy to it.
their music is kind of subdued and when they did the hot shots songs he was out there raping getting up on the front of the stage
also when you are doing an album tour, hard to be spontaneous

Agree that the sound was great….loved the bass (slightly fuzzed/overreved) and drums

So $45 seems like the new normal for concert T-shirts…..they looked nice….I would have bought one for $35….$50 for the signed tour poster seemed like the better deal

My guess is it was more like 65% sold. Probably moved 700-800 tickets so better than their heyday but not by much.

I agree with all things that have been said.

Pretty lack luster in terms of energy (I mean, average age is def. 50+ (band and audience) and it's a tuesday night), but the band themselves sounded great and I'm glad I tick'd them off the list. I can't imagine they'll ever tour again. I find myself dipping into numbers when seeing bands like this and there is zero % chance they're making any money.

To this day, there will never be a better venue than a sparsely sold 930 club. I actually had my eyes peeled for a tall man named hutch, but never spotted him. Ran into sidehatch right at the end after leaving my cozy soundboard wall.

I also did a quick glance at merch and as soon as I saw a $4 as the first number on the tshirt, I scurried along.

I think the DJ was the keyboard dude (TIL Beta Band is from Scotland and not England).

A solid Andy's pizza stop prior to the show with old fashioneds on tap... and delicious.

One Stella at the club for $14.43 after tax, fees, tip. Not good.

I really, really enjoyed the Beta Band show. Agreed that the energy took dips and lulls, but for me the Beta Band is pretty much a stoner/psychedelic band...a handful of Madchester elements to liven up the vibe (thinking about the video of the Stone Roses live in Blackpool), and I loved the percussion and how everyone switched up instruments. But I guess I wasn't expecting it to be super energetic...thought it might be more chill, and parts of it really were. That being said, I'm grateful to see a band I've listened to off and on for 25+ years, and I think that it was really worth seeing.

Not throwing knives here, and not suggesting that IMP is doing this...but a lot of promoters are taking steeper cuts on merch, leaving bands no choice but to raise ticket prices/merch costs. Miki Berenyi had 20% of her merch revenue taken off in SF, and she was apoplectic. That's basically the only thing they're truly making any money on right now, and I know that hurt the band. I don't think it's coincidence everything feels more expensive. Things are genuinely costing a lot more, and everyone has employees to pay.

One more observation...and the reason why I still love the 9:30...the bass/low end and overall balance of sound last night still makes me feel like I'm seeing shows in a room that is far preferable than a bigger venue (ahem, Anthem). It wasn't just hearing the music, I could feel it...and that is one of the many qualities that makes the club still so damn special.

I think there was a fairly decent kerfuffle over this recently that IMP does indeed shaft performers on their merch, but I could be wrong. There's not enough profits from $14 bottles of stella to let the artists keep a few extra bucks.

Seth has opined on this topic before. You can go find it. The essence was “no other business is required to provide a space for people to sell their goods without taking a %, why should it be incumbent upon me,” which is absolutely correct.

They should just sell them from their tour bus after the show

When mike watt sold me a t-shirt from the stage, I'm pretty sure he didn't have to share that

Or maybe they can have that thing when you donate money to a charity, where they are like, could you cover the fee
So I guess that would make your $45 t-shirt $54

I don't know when the tipping the merch guy started, and I've done it (I think I did get a cool circle jerks poster because of it) but that seems kinda lame

including space for selling merch could be provided as part of the contract, saying that a venue owner's hands are completely tied is just silly.  it is a choice to take a cut in exchange for the space.  you can call it an industry-standard choice, but it's a choice nonetheless.

there are alternatives... but i'm not sure we would like them: increasing price of tickets, increasing price of amenities, providing less (of something, not sure what - staph?), etc.

Neither he, nor I in my summary of his comments, suggested any such thing. He selected to build and maintain a merch booth which otherwise could be used for additional paid capacity and he expects to get some money for that. The same way a sports arena charges the outside vendor running the concession stands a cut, or the same way Dulles takes a piece of Hudson News' revenue, or the way . . .
