If Bryce Harper’s big thing was to get the biggest contract in history it didn’t last long

That was sort of easy to predict, wasn't it?

I can't believe he passed on the Dodgers offer just to get the largest overall contract.  Plus 13 years in Philly.

Neither can I.  Trout is likely to beat that $330m number in  2 years, hopefully sooner for Angels fans, but no one is going to touch $45m AAV for a VERY long time.

Trout's AAV was only ~$36m.

Opinion: Mike Trout never wanted to leave Orange County, and now gets to retire as an Angel

"[The Angels] knew that Trout was fully invested in the organization. Trout even studied videos and watched hitters before the last few drafts, and personally lobbied for the Angels to draft outfielder Jo Adell in 2017. They drafted, signed him, and Trout even gave him his cell phone number, telling him to call whenever he needed anything."

We may just see an OF of Trout, Upton and Adell this season.  If not, next season will see the return of Ohtani and Adell. Thanks Mike!

the dishonor to get paid so little this day and age

Upon further review, it's technically a 5-year deal, and since he's still under control, it's quite similar to the the Trout deal 7 years ago, only a lesser amount.

Bregman was vocally upset about being paid $640,500 this season, after the Astros upped his salary at their discretion.  He's still going to make that this season (presumably for luxury tax reasons?) and then make $100m over the next 5 years (2-years past his arbitration years).

The real head scratcher is this one:  Chicago White Sox extend Eloy Jimenez - $43M guarantee over six seasons, with a pair of option years that cost a cumulative $32M.

Dude has never had a major league at-bat.  The Astros tried this with Jon Singleton (oops) and we've seen two more deals like it this past year, but both of them had a go at the bigs for at least a September call up.

Even Arte Moreno, who has no problem paying people, made Trout play two seasons....

Contracts without one full year of service:
Jon Singleton $10M
Scott Kingery $24M
Tim Anderson $25M
Paul DeJong $26M
Eloy Jimenez $43M (!)

Since nobody has to save up to try and buy Trout, they're all just signing extensions now.

Today's game reminded me a lot of last season. Both teams had 5 hits and yet the Nats couldn't get on the board. Hope this is not a harbinger of things to come.

Just saw baseball Jesus trap a ball, unsure if he caught it, fire to second to get at least one out, maybe two. The umpires ruled it an out.  Upon review, they ruled a trap, but called all runners safe.  That's not right - you cant punish the fielder because it happened so fast the umps go it wrong.  There was going to be an out recorded either way.
