That's the difference between JJ Abrams and Justin Lin.

I finally watched the new Star Trek trailer, and I will have to disagree.  This looks like a fun science fiction romp.

Really? I never caught it. I think it's on Netflix though. I thought the Judge Dredd "reboot" or whatever was fucking awesome. Maybe I should turn off my brain and check out Robocop.

The Dredd reboot was solid entertainment, but I inadvertently sullied it by seeing Raid: The Redemption just a day or two beforehand. With both movies having similar storylines (achieved in different ways), Dredd just can't compare. Still, it was pretty good.

For pure brutal spectacle, that last Punisher movie with Ray Stevenson did the job, I thought. If nothing else, it was a helluva lot better than the Thomas Jane version from a decade ago.

I don't know if you need to turn your brain off... This one was a bit deeper than the old movies.

i used to collect comics waaaaaay back when, in fact i still have a box or two of them, most in plastic sleeves, somewhere in a parental basement (i hope).  i remember when The Dark Knight Returns first hit the comic-shop shelves.

those covers gave me a nerd-boner.

I bought the regular one. There's already a hard cover edition of issue 1. They are really going to milk the shit out of this. The first issue alone was 7 god damn dollars. It was great though and I look forward to reading the rest. I'm not a huge fan of variant covers though. I wish they would just include all that cool ass art in one big issue. Usually those will get lumped into the book once all the issues come out. It's lame. Another cool Batman story going on now is Europa. All the art is drawn by pencil and has been in the works, or held back, for 10 years. Batman/Joker team up. It's weird. Issue 2 comes out today.

@Relaxer - Isn't there a 2nd Raid out there as well? I've seen some of the shots from that movie and they look insane. I've never taken time to check it out. There's a sequel for Dredd in the works as well, but for now it's all talk and early pre production phase.

@killsaly - fine I wont turn off my brain.

There is a Raid 2, but I don't think I have EVER seen a sequel make such a departure in tone and structure from the first than with these movies. The first Raid is a taut, lean thriller that has barely any dialogue, takes place entirely in one location, lasts an hour and a half, and has less than 5 characters that you remember when it's over. The story is about a guy who needs to go from the bottom floor of a building to the top floor.

In contrast, Raid 2 is 2 1/2 hours long, has a million characters, has a plot that I could not possibly explain despite having seen the movie twice, and is filled with meaningless, outta-nowhere scenes that have no connection to the plot or the characters. It's a complete WTF movie, though the action pieces are incredible and the whole thing is a big hot fascinating mess.

Gah! I'll have to get into those this weekend.

EDIT: Can't wait to see Star Wars tonight!!! Going at 8:20! It looks like the 2 showings before and 1 after are sold out. Was hoping to avoid a crowd but I guess not!

You were hoping to avoid a crowd at opening night of the new Star Wars movie?

Pretty much my thoughts...

I am either going tomorrow, or Saturday.  I want to see it regular, and in IMAX 3D.

i'm trying to decide if i want to see it regular, or 3D.  i've been underwhelmed by 3D movies.  Avatar was cool, but since then... meh.

I am going to watch both. So far I have only seen two IMAX 3D movies (I do not do to the movies often, Star Wars is going to be my first for 2015), Pacific Rim (amazing in 3D), and the last Superman movie (OK in 3D).
