official count of COVID-19 cases in the US:
3/15: 3,680
3/16: 4,663
3/17: 6,411
3/18: 9,259
3/19: 13,000+
source

yeah, this is going well.

for the more visually-minded, this is what the curve looks like:

we should be at well over 20k tomorrow, and 100k by monday.

I don’t know...33,000 so far...not sure 100k by Mondayis really gonna happen

Doubles every two days, sometimes three if we're lucky.

My 79 year old mother went and got a haircut yesterdaybecause she "needed" one. She says that she ran the idea past my sister first, and my sister said yes.
questions:
How is a hair salon open at all?
How does an open hair salon feel that serving the elderly right now is a good idea?
Does my sister have an ulterior motive?

I feel you pain there, Challenged. My 79 year old mom with respiratory issues who lives in senior housing (that she jus moved into a few months ago) apparently spent the day apartment hunting (at a different senior complex) and "shopping" in spite of my brother (who has no kids) living in a large single family house 10 miles away.

Over the years I have come to loathe Wall Street

Watch them pressure to get money for the companies

No amount of money from government or concessions ever satisfies them and it’s so easy for them to sell right now to put pressure on democrats to go along with Mnuchin and Republicans

I know regular people aren’t even checking their 401k’s

Let it drop...the package should help people not corporations...

I agree....Dems should not give any ground on this issue
I'm sure the GOP will say this is a shitty time to do it, but they have done the exact opposite in the past
and jez, we're doing for the poeple, not so the cronies in the big corps
I think the voters will understand that the GOP is not willing to compromise here

Is this true???
@Redpainter1
5 Republican Senators now in self-quarantine and will most likely not be able to vote.

- Rick Scott FL
- Cory Gardner CO
- Mike Lee UT
- Mitt Romney UT
- Rand Paul KY

Dems have the majority in the Senate.

Mitch McConnell's biggest nightmare.

Let's see what happens now.

It’s complicated cause when companies start mass layoffs which seems to have started a few hours ago Republicans will blame democrats for not passing their corporate welfare bill...

It’s a fine line but I just don’t see point of propping up airlines...help the employees directly..airlines will come back...

I also think this is the time to do a sweeping Election reform
Nationwide Vote By Mail!  (yes each state has to do it, but the fed gov't could provide funds and assistance to get it in place by Nov)

It seems corporate shame works in the social media era!

Is anybody else worried voting by mail will favor Republicans?

Maybe it’s just me but the inner cities are a shit show? Have you thought it through about poorer more transient people actually getting ballots?

Not to mention can you not imagine states with Republican governors using this as a way in which to not get ballots to certain groups?

It’s a nice buzzword and ultimately am for it but...

My only fear is that the below 30-year-olds won't even know what a mailbox looks like
I do think that Rep's could have advantages in that they could ensure that everyone in a Nursing home can vote.

But if more Americans were able to vote (let's say we get 80ish % participation)...and they still vote GOP, we'll then the people have spoken
Currently, lots of people are not voting...vast majority would vote dem (maybe I'm dreaming, but that seems to be the case)

More votes... ensure GOP losses
that's why they try hard to suppress voting and use code words like 'stopping voter fraud' (which translates to how can we make difficult for likely dem voters from casting their vote)

Wow I just don’t think your assumptions are correct

And voter suppression of certain groups would continue

I don’t think you’ve thought this through...you are just assuming all best cases

I am in favor - generally - of anything that makes it easier to vote for people but if you don’t think a Republican governor in Florida, for example, would use this to fuck over Democrat voters hardcore...well

Of course....but would think if every resident who can legally vote was mailed a ballot (or could pick it up)
It would be easier to track
1. we'd document that every voter was mailed a ballot
2. we could document every received one and be able to do cross-checks so there was no double voting and fraud

But this is my fear

But some election experts warn that an abrupt adoption of vote-by-mail systems in states that aren’t sufficiently prepared would introduce new risks and avenues for disruption. The results, they say, could bring widespread confusion or even disenfranchise voters.

Would give trump and the GOP latitude to be like "we have to cancel the election results and we'll revisit this in 2024"

To me wait til we win control of both houses of Congress and White House in a few months to do this

Right now Republicans would take advantage of this to screw people over and Supreme Court would back them

We need major electoral reform but right now is a non starter
