How did you end up here?
« on: May 26, 2004, 07:47:00 pm »
Since there are quite of few people on here that don't seem to fit the usual description of what a 9:30 boarder seems to be (Rhett, Dupek, Mankie, etc.), I was wondering what brought everyone to this particular forum.

Personally, I wanted to see if anyone had anything interesting to say after the disasterous Murder City Devils set here a few years ago.  Sure enough, they did, and I was hooked.  How about the rest of you?

It's a music based forum.  I listen to a lot of weird music.  It's also rather local...I'm native to the area.

I tried a few other bboards, got kicked off of some for being an asshole.  So I mellowed.

 Hey, you wanted the truth?

Now, don't you all want to give me a great big hug, or something?

Yes, b/c I think you are mellow and funny.  :)

Been going to the club for years, therefore I am.

(If I recall correctly, I signed on initially to view an answer in the faq section, about a rumored show. Didn't visit for a year after that. Dunno what brought me back in to hang around...I think it was the "Que estas eschuchando?" topic.)

Don't remember. However, I know what keeps me now on this board. I am amazed how defensive and conservative Americans have become over the last two years. Many people on this board seem to defend Bush despite all the lies and crap. It's interesting to see how patriotic americans have become now that all the world thinks the US government is just a bunch of arrogant liars.

I was not referring to your post. I have defended the US everytime I have been in another place. However, I feel like Americans are somehow supporting their president (despite what the last Washington Post poll said) because they feel that when the rest of the world criticizes US foreign policy it's like if they criticized the US and its people and that's not the case. People are becoming extremely defensive in the US.

Fabulous question, nkotbie....

I signed up in October 2001, likely to ask a question about a show or something, but I didn't look at the forum really.  I started reading early last summer, around April or May...?   I must have looked in for something in particular, then found cool information on local shows I didn't know about -- Fort Reno, Live on Penn, stuff at Black Cat I wouldn't have seen until I read about them here.   By last year, I at least knew what a forum was because I'd joined and read the Foo Fighters forum to find out about the shows, new singles' B-sides, etc.  (I was obsessed with Foo for a short time there.   ;) )  And it's pretty obvious I can't keep much to myself, so I started posting.

Funny thing is how, before I met anyone but started to learn some of the folks on the board, I'd look around at a show and wonder if anyone there was Lulu or paige or walkie or the scientist.  One time at Fort Reno there were these two very indie coolster gals sitting a couple blankets away and I thought that they had to be a couple of the 9:30 Club board gals!   And there was a girl in a pirate costume and that's around when y'all were talking about pirate luuuurv.  Crazy, huh.

I was going to Black Cat and 9:30 Club regularly before last summer, but not nearly as often as I go now.  I probably went to 15 shows a year in 2001, 2002, and I hit over 50 in 2003.

I know we talk about a lot of other shit here, but it's the music and the local news that it's all about for me.  It's  so much more useful than a random forum on music because I find out what's coming up and can 'debrief' on it with folks who were at the shows.  Oh yeah, and that crazy music swapping!

Barcelona, you're kind of making nkotbie's very point.  If it's really politics you're interested in, it would seem there would be so many other places where that's the primary discussion.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think you should leave here or it makes no sense for you to be, it's just interesting that you're focused on a board primarily about the music scene (though we certainly do derail onto other topics pretty easily).

NKOTB, I know, I know, I think your point was more about musical preferences, but still....

well my user number indicates i'm a long timer around these parts.  i started posting on a forum when the 9:30 club first went online which must have been around 97/98.  in those days the forum was only reachable through a series of links and not directly linked on the home page.  so it was a small but lively bunch hanging out here.  i think thirsty may actually be the longest running poster .  anyways the forum went dark on a couple of occasions and i kept checking to see if it was back online.  i think i kept hanging out because it was a cool local scene forum and <ass kissin' mode> seth would pop by every once in awhile to share his insight.  also, i've meet really kwel people by being apart of this forum... most of my friends in fact   :D

Actually, I think this is what makes this board so interesting. It's not just about music, you can discuss other things. You will have noticed that my musical knowledge doesn't go too far beyond the Pixies, Pavement, the Pogues, Talking Heads and a few other bands. I guess politics, as a foreigner to see what Americans think about their current government is one of the main reasons, I find it extremely interesting, I think the US is the most conservative country I have ever been to. Other reasons might be to hear about new music bands and I guess part of the reason is the fun you can sometimes find on this board.

That's right, the "Just Announced" topic also kept me here, not sonick.  ;)  Well, that, and my concert buddy left the state. Decided to stay in touch w/ the local music "scene" here.

I remember when my first DC concert buddy left the city.  It was awful.  My sister was here for a while, which was cool, but when she left (she hated this stinkin' town) I had a dry few years during which I didn't see many shows at all because I had no one to go with and I'd gotten tired of going solo.  So glad to have a bunch of show buddies now, both from the board and 'real life' (though a couple are grumbling about moving to New York...that siren of a city is always calling some folks....).  That was way before boards were working the way they do today....
