Artists that people should be appreciating more
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:33:00 am »
Kirsty MacColl

I can listen to her all day long.  Was very luck to have seen her live once and was just enthralled and enchanted by the performance.

Adored by Morrissey, Marr and The Pogues whose members she was able to drink under the table.  Spider Stacy sums her up better than I....

"The angelic voice, the perfect pitch, the brilliantly observed, beautifully realised song, the fierce love and loyalty to family and friends or as Morrissey has mentioned elsewhere, the crackin' bust"

"To those of you who might be experiencing her for the first time I can only say that I envy you".

I will add that she is an amazing lyricist who could be witty, bitter and heartfelt.  She ran the gamut from pub rock to latin influenced gems with the occasional country song along the way.

Anyone who adores top notch pop music owes it themselves to hear and own her fantastic albums.  eMusic has a collection of Stiff Records releases and her third album "Titanic Days"

Little Wayne.

The disrespect shown to him in the V-Fest thread is abominable. His album is first rate, at least according to pitchfork.

I know some folks on here worship at his altar as well, but for anyone who missed him...I'd have to say Elliott Smith. He was a true musical genius.

I'd also throw in Lloyd Cole. His stuff always makes me feel kinda warm and fuzzy. Great songwriter.

Whatever happened to the Essex Green? I still put Cannibal Sea on all the time -- great pastorally inclined record. I guess it wasn't that long ago, but they're not popular enough to be dragging ass on a follow-up.

I demand they release an excellent follow-up within 60 days.

Agreed. I also like the previous album before it, The Long Goodbye. But they are clearly underrated.

I mentioned this previously, but in November '05, they played the Talking Head club in Baltimore (my first time in this area). We made it to the street where Talking Head is. We got there at 9 pm and the bouncer said that they haven't arrived. We left...that street was creepy.

Cloud Cult.  They make some of the most beautiful, moving music that i have ever heard.

Bonnie Prince Billy/Palace Brothers/Will Oldham

I've got pretty much every record this dude has put out since his '93 Palace debut, and there's not a clunker in there. He can do soft and brooding, and he can do loud and chaotic. All of his records are quality, and this year's Lie Down in the Light is edging out Sun Kil Moon's as my favorite album released this year.
