Don't blame it on video games or today's culture, society's always been violent, we just have mass communications that spread the images and info much faster so we are more aware of it than ever before.  Check out Karen Halttunen's book "Murder Most Foul"--19th century America was pretty vicious, just take into account all the lynchings.

i have no solutions for what happened in PA to a group of innocents.  i don't think there are any solutions because this country is sick.  sick as a shithouse rat.  i know the following is not an exhaustive list of the reasons that have made this country THE nuttiest nutbag western country (it's the greatest country on earth motherfucker, and if you don't like it the way it is, then get the fuck out you fucking francophile) but it's a start:

 the media and its consolidation
 9/11
george W, dick cheney, rumsfeld, condi, wolfowitz, hadley, richard perle, douglas feith, etc.
 neocons generally
 fast food
 bad beer
 television generally
 celebrity worship
 mtv
 saturday night live anymore
 this GOP led house
 this GOP led senate
 most pop music
 girls gone wild
 the war on drugs
 the military industrial complex
 the university industrial complex
 the prison industrial complex
 the death penalty as applied
35% marginal rates on the nation's highest income earners
 real estate gone wild
 the nra
people who don't read a goddamned thing
 terrorism
 iraq
 wall street's "numbers"
 paris hilton
 pro wrestling
 the pharmaceutical industry
 jerry falwell, etc.
extreme partisans from "both" sides dictating its respective party's politics
 the committee system in congress
no 3rd or 4th or 5th party to speak of
al gore being a wooden fuck until 2003 or so
 reality fucking tv
 hannity & colmes
 bill o'reilly
 fox "news" generally
 "red" counties and states
 dateline nbc
 meet the tim
the general level of discourse in the US
bill frist, rick santorum, denny hastert (the enabler), john boehner, etc.
 wedge issues

the fact that i can probably go out and get a gun quicker than i can get a washing machine delivered to my place.

an american's "god given" and "constitutional" right to buy a pile of guns at wal-mart and elsewhere, solely owing to the fact that one has no criminal record, which can, in turn, be unloaded to any old ne'er-do-well.  or better yet, that same individual can go shoot up some school and its students whenever that fucking piece of fucking shit might feel like "cracking."  most others can do so as well.

 cheers.

Wow...I think Yinzer just summed it up pretty nicely. No more need for discussion. We can archive this thread, thankyouverymuch.

Doesn't leave much room for hope, does it?

never been able to wrap my head around that mentality: the country is sick, but don't you dare criticize it.  love it as-is or leave it.  dissent is un-american.
