Yeah but can he still bring it? He has to be in his 70's. I was on the fence about tonight and decided to skip it.
WRONG CALL!
He can absolutely still bring it and he's 63 by the way and seens 50...guy is in amazing shape...He's always been known for being a great live performer btw
Great last night as always. Sold real well... interesting how well Toots sells for someone who has been hitting the DC market 2 times a year for the past 4 years at least (and that the crowd is pretty darn young)..
You're suffering from what my friend calls fearing the "Lee Scratch Perry experience"
Now Lee did not have it together when I saw him a the 930 about 12-14 years ago. That was sad.
This is what I wrote in 2006 after seeing Toots for the first time.. wasn't much different last night although we were not allowed on the stage for Monkey Man (2006 is still the only time I've been on stage):
i caught the toots and the maytals show last night at the 930 club and BOY O BOY! i'm not exagerating when i say one of the best shows i have ever seen... the positive energy/good vibes this man puts out there are something... his voice is in great form... and anybody that starts their show with their best known song , "Pressure Drop", is doing something right!!....i've never seen the 930 club as rocking as it was last night and he went on stage at 10:45 on a sunday night!....he ran through all the genre defining stuff he's come up with- largely focusing on his classic sides for trojan from the late 60s and early 70s - including "do the reggay" which is supposed to have given birth to the term reggae itself (reggaephiles step up and correct me on that one if i'm off).... i was front row the entire show... what a classy guy..he shook everyone's hand or did the fist to fist move with every single person..this guy made a serious connection with the crowd... towards the end for monkey man about 50 of us clambered on stage to dance as toots and the band delivered the song..so i finally got on stage!..his version of "country roads" with its "take me home country roads west jamaica" refrain had the entire 930 club screaming WEST JAMAICA.... when the show ended at 12:38 it was all big wideyed smiles everywhere you looked...
