Can't go wrong with the debut (self titled)- probably his best.   The first John Prine album I listened to was 2005's Fair and Square.
I love "In Spite of Ourselves" as well.  I've not even heard the last album...the last Prine show I saw was 2011 at Wolf Trap but my fave was the one at Warner in 2007 when he did a good chunk of duets from In Spite of Ourselves with Iris DeMent.

^ any recommendations for a newbie like me?

Anthology hits all the high points through 1993. In Spite of Ourselves was a totally charming duets collection. For Better or Worse was a nice but not as good follow-up 17 years later.

Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows was and excellent tribute album by a bunch of singers with arguably better singing voices.

1. "Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)" Justin Vernon
2. "Wedding Day in Funeralville" Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band
3. "All the Best" My Morning Jacket
4. "Mexican Home" Josh Ritter
5. "Six O'Clock News" Lambchop
6. "Far From Me" Justin Townes Earle
7. "Spanish Pipedream" The Avett Brothers
8. "Angel from Montgomery" Old Crow Medicine Show
9. "The Late John Garfield Blues" Sara Watkins
10. "Daddy's Little Pumpkin" Drive-By Truckers
11. "Unwed Fathers" Liz Isenberg/Deer Tick
12. "Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian" Those Darlins

I highly recommend not starting your Prine journey with a bunch of fake folk artists.

Depends on the listener. I played the Prine Anthology, and the rest of my family  literally screamed at me to "turn that shit off."

If I play the tribute album, I predict one person probably tolerates it and the other probably likes it.

John Prine and Glenn Parsons do the same thing for me
I totally respect their songwriting genius, but always seem to like it better when others do their songs
I know I suck at music appreciation

Faces - you can make me dance, sing or anything
Box of the first four albums with stray singles and b-sides.

Your 12 year old daughter's music taste is not valid and I'm pretty sure your wife will think most of these artists are some Jack Johnson wanna be mother fuckers.
