You're a good writer. Why the self-doubt?  Have you been listening to Radiohead or something?

jesus, i should know better than to just make a half-assed, half thought out, hyperbolic statement on this board.  Next time I'll look up Chris Martin quotes first and take a couple hours off work to post...   ;)

But I do think Mobius said it well.

the radiohead haters were in very bad moods yesterday.  must not have been enough Britney news to keep them distracted.

for sake of including this in the discussion - I took a look at the national charts for Last FM for last week (September 30 - October 7):

 1. The Beatles - 71,978 listeners | 830,175 plays
 2. Radiohead - 68,904 listeners | 805,049 plays
 3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - 63,947 listeners | 487,228 plays

That's before the album came out.  I guarantee you that Radiohead is number one this week, far and away.  This at least provides some gauge of whether or not my grandiose "stopped to listen for an hour" statement was at all true.

And for the record, U2 did not make the top ten.  In fact, U2 came in at number 22.  Right behind the Smashing Pumpkins at 21  ;)

Nay.  For though JT has the visage of a cherub and the chords of an angel, he is but the spawn of Satan.  Thom Yorke, he of the gaunt frame and lazy eye, doth show us that within the imperfect can blossom the psalms of eternal bliss.  Johnny Greenwood doth bear his instrument like the harp of the archangel.  And when they join their other disciples to perform their transcendent ceremonies, their stage lights doth illuminate our path to glory.  Forever and ever.  Amen.

That's one way to look at it.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Justin Timberlake? [/b]

[sarcasm]Now that's not a select group or anything.  It's great that Last FM has left the zone of audiophiles only and reached the masses[/sarcasm]

I bet if you looked at my charts for next week Radiohead would be ahead of U2.  But not if you looked at my overall charts.

And I bet the week U2 comes out with a new album, and arguably the week before, U2 will be ahead of Radiohead.  So your point is?

I didn't make any claim as far as what that represented.  I'm just including it in the discussion.  But you're right, we probably don't want to use people who really like music as any kind of gauge...

Last.fm's charts don't go back to 2004 when U2 released their last (awful) album.  Otherwise I'd check for you.

But look at any given week - I've cycled through probably 10-12 at this point - and I have yet to see one where U2 is ahead of Radiohead.

As if I didn't cehck on my own...

With the exception of new album week, you likely won't find one because Last.FM does not represent the masses.  It represents audiophiles, and there is no doubt in my mind that Radiohead are oogled by audiophiles to a much greater level than U2.

For the record, by the way, I like U2.  I thought HTDAAB was fucking awful, but I do like U2.
