The Golden tickets are the ones to get.  60 bucks for all three days.

Something about Jane's playing makes me think this will be the last Lolla...

lolla has a contract/MOU/permissions slip/etc from chicago, keeping them in grant park through 2011.  they make money every year.  personally, i doubt they are planning this one as the last.

Fuck the Beastie Boys, except for the fact they were secret characters in NBA JAM.

Weak headlining lineup, hope they make up for it with a solid indie lineup.

And when do these golden tickets go on sale exactly?

in case you've never tried getting golden tickets before, be aware that it is very very very hard to score them.  you need to be refreshing the site constantly, and they sell out in minutes.  the ticketing website also tends to crash.  i've lucked out and managed to get them twice now... but i'm obsessive that way.  YMMV.

oh stop, its not THAT hard. I have never known anyone who didnt log in within the first 20 minutes or so, get shut out of them.

really?  then you and i hang out in different circles, then, 'cause i know/have heard from lots of people who got shut out or lost their orders due to server crashes - check out the lolla msg board for the usual moaning and bitching.  and i'm fairly confident that last year's presale didn't last 20 minutes, but maybe my memory is failing me.

uhhh last years golden tix did not last long. in 20 mins there was no way i was able to get them. and it is THAT hard. maybe youre just really lucky, but ive never had any luck.

well, i know that in 2006 i logged on almost a full hour after the email and got them. I didnt even know about them either.    in 2007 i certainly dont remember refreshing and panicking.  I didnt go last year, but i can imagine that Radiohead playing made the tickets go that much faster. (as it did when they played Coachella)

none of this really matters anyway, but i am certainly FAR from lucky when it goes to getting hard to score tickets.

Ok, just talked to frontgate....  if you have a printout... you are good to go.

also... he said tickets will continue to be leaked out back into the system as they cancel orders on people for ordering too many

This was a quote from the a lolla board member.  I just called frontgate to confirm my order with my order number and it's good to go.  If you guys don't have luck with the site try calling frontgate themselves.  Good luck.

So after watching the site all week, i leave at 1 pm to go up to NYC to see the REM tribute.

And i miss out on cheap tickets. The gods are obviously not happy with me...

I think I'm still gonna go, but yes, I just really need to bitch at no one in particular, cause that fucking sucks. 2 solid days of putting up with the dumb asses on the Lolla boards for nothing...

every year, Lollapalooza finds it fitting to put one really stupid act on the bill, someone for people to laught at.

the  year i went was this 16 year old girl rapper...who's name escapes me.

this year...Asher Roth.  that "I Love College" song, is top 10 stupid-est songs ever!

people were talking about metric on the lolla board.

My beloved Metric is playing Metro on Sunday, June 14. That puts them in the eye of the dreaded radius clause. I'm not sure if C3 would let the band do a June show and the fest.

They should, but I digress...

Maybe theyll be added tho??? and YYYs are in NYC at APW the weekend before, not that it really helps unless youre already going.

schedule on first look gave me a headache. ive worked out some conflicts but theres still more to be figured out. Saturday seems the weakest day by far and Friday is just awful as it seems everyone is playing then. And Sunday has some brutal conflicts. Seriously - Friendly Fires v Ra Ra Riot.

Then again - Decemberists/Andrew Bird (with an hour and 15 min set) vs PB&J/Of Montreal is just mind boggling. Luckily I saw The Hazards of Love already as Im pretty sure this is what will be played in Chicago. Wish theyd given Decemberists a longer set time. Then again would have prob cut into Of Montreal. Ah well. the joys of festivals.

it has occurred to me that a festival-specific iphone/mobile app would be a great idea, but this is the first time i've heard of one being created:

Get Your Free Lolla iPhone App
http://www.lollapalooza.com/blog/index.php/2009/07/27/get-your-free-lolla-iphone-app/

Got an iPhone at Lolla? There?s an App for that. Get the Festival?s free iPhone App to help guide you through your weekend. You?ll be able to create a custom schedule, or synch with your custom schedule from Lollapalooza.com; peruse the Lolla Map; check out artist bios and music; and even use the Lolla Ball to bounce your favorite performance to another level.

Search for ?Lollaplooza? in the iTunes App Store or download it here: itms://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=323060390&mt=8&s=143441

HAHAHA...

Friendly Fires!

Word has yet to officially come down from the Lollapalooza camp, but the buzz is that the Crooked Vultures, a new supergroup featuring Queens of the Stone Age band leader Josh Homme, Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and the mighty John Paul Jones, Led Zeppelin's legendary bass player, will provide the much-needed icing on the cake largely missing from this year's festival lineup by closing things out with a special intimate after-show Sunday night at Metro.

Is $50 a surprise?

These are three huge names in rock, playing a club show.  Of course it'll be a bit pricey, and of course it'll sell out anyway.

Title: Re: Lollapalooza Lineup
Post by: sweetcell on August 06, 2009, 11:58:34 am
grohl alone could sell out the metro.  JPJ  = led zeppelin.  so the weakest link in all of this is homme, who isn't exactly a slouch at attracting a crowd.

i suspect that even at $100 a ticket, they still would have sold out this show.
Title: Re: Lollapalooza Lineup
Post by: Vas Deferens on August 06, 2009, 12:14:19 pm
Grohl may be big, but he's the weakest link, musically at least!
Title: Re: Lollapalooza Lineup
Post by: gaaaaaaaaah on August 06, 2009, 12:16:54 pm
As much as I love him, Homme is the weakest link popularity wise.  The Foo Fighters headline massive shows and Nirvana is one of the most well-known bands ever, Zeppelin is Zeppelin, but QOTSA still play relatively small venues.

Musically there really is no weak link.  All three of them know what they're doing.
Title: Re: Lollapalooza Lineup
Post by: sweetcell on August 06, 2009, 01:27:41 pm
Musically there really is no weak link.

this is why i really want to be at this show.  none of them are slouches.  seems like so many so-called super-groups have someone who doesn't really fit in... "featuring the bassist from hootie and the blowfish!  and the drummer from MGMT!!!"

not so with this group.  all three are solid.  together, there is potential for magic (or, alternately, disappointment, but i'd be willing to take my chances  ;D)
Title: Re: Lollapalooza Lineup
Post by: gaaaaaaaaah on August 06, 2009, 01:32:05 pm
Honestly, I don't think this will disappoint.  Although the Foo Fighters' last album was rather boring, these three guys all know a thing or two about making good rock music.  Dave drumming, to me, means that this won't be another bland FF album.  Songs For The Deaf is a kick-ass album, so I think good things will come from this Grohl/Homme collaboration too.  To be frank, I could care less about JPJ.

Seth?

Dude, how can Dave Grohl drummer be considered a weak link?  He's phenomenal.  He and Jimmy Chamberlain were the class of the 90's, if not the past 20 years

Grohl may be big, but he's the weakest link, musically at least!

Dude, how can Dave Grohl drummer be considered a weak link?

for joe, it's because he's sold more than 10,000 records.  people having heard of him = automatic suckage.

In Chicago now.  Going to check out the Decemberists and Heartless Bastards at the metro tonight.  Hopefully the weather holds up this weekend and hopefully no rain.  Don't want it to be like last week at APW.  The weather is nice here today.  Not so much so in Virginia this morning.

HA no way!!  There are some other board members on here that seems like they go to shows every day.   ;D  I'm far from that league.  Just got back from the Decemberists show.  Pretty good as they played songs that fans actually picked them to play.  Not like Flaming Lips with pitchfork but actual fan picks.  They played a new song that has never been played before either.  Can't recall the name of the song off the top of my head.  Hopefully they will play it again at lolla but I think they are just doing the hazard stuff like from the tour.  Great show overall with heartless bastards opening.  ;D

ok back from day 1.  Talk about a day of non stop freaking rain.  It let up just around 7 or so just in time for the main headliners.  Pretty good first day.  Saw shit load of bands.  Wanted to see Crystal Castles at 5 but they were way on the other side of everything and it was just rainy and miserable to head over.  Only band I hadn't seen before for day 1 was Depeche Mode and of course Crystal Castles.  They were pretty good expectations met.  Now time for Band Of Horses after show at House Of Blues.   ;D  I think I saw some people today that looked like that cat.  :o

It wasn't too bad and it passed - we had the most gorgeous day yesterday. Sorry to hear about the rain. Hopefully things are better than APW, however. Thanks for the link to Decemberists. There are a few better ones available too. Any streams to Lolla? (wasn't there one in previous years?)

Saw...

Hey Champ
Black Joe
Gaslight Anthem
Ben Folds
Thievery
Depeche Mode
Arctic Monkeys (at the Metro)

Pretty good day considering the weather.  Got way down in front for DM, but I felt like they kind of mailed it in.  Dave Gahan kept holding up his mike for the crowd to sing rather than do the choruses himself.  I think they had another encore to do, but never came out.

back from day two.  hot one today.  I would rather have a scorcher then flood zone.  Surprise band of the day for me is Mike Snow and the Constantines.  Never seen either of them before and they were pretty good.  Worst disaster ever is Animal Collective dj set.  Those fuckers were like over a hour late or so and I still didn't get to watch them.  Got to the new dj area early and they were up there messing around.  The dj before them was pretty good but what was Animal Collective doing?  People were getting restless or maybe that was me.  They kept puting on their headphones taking them off and putting them back on.  An hour into it I gave up and had to go catch Gomez.  Overall good second day.  Any of the guys that are at Lollapalooza try to catch the dj set?  What the heck happened?

day three had to be the best day of the festival.  Very good lineup and everyone was great.  I really liked Friendly Fires.  They got the crowd moving.  Kaiser Chiefs were pretty good too.  Never really listend to Bat For Lashes before but she put on a great show.  Mix of Tori Amos meets Bjork I guess.  Lou Reed wasn't too bad.  He was late getting on so that kind of pushed Band Of Horses back from playing.  He was having so much problem with his guitar and the sound.  We could all see he was getting frustrated at times and at one point he just threw his guitar to the ground.  Band of Horses was awesome.  Great set and I left to go catch Janes Addiction when they said "that was loud wasn't it? let's try and blow this shit up"  So pretty much they were playing at the same time as Janes so it sounded like who coulld play the loudest.  Janes was actually really good.  I saw them at Merrieweather and thought they were meh after NIN opened up.  However, they were awesome at Lolla.  Perry is a pretty good showman.  He also closed out with Jane Says with special guest Joe Perry.  Cam died on me for Janes so only got snippets of stuff.  Overally another great Lolla.  One of my favorite festivals to go to.  Now back to work, great, just great  ;D

Agree that Sunday was very strong.

Friendly Fires
Kaiser Chiefs (probably my favorite show of the weekend)
Vampire Weekend (disappointing)
Cold War Kids
Snoop
Silversun Pickups (also very good)
Killers

I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed the Killers.  They've come a long way since I last saw them.

They were doing a lot of filming for every band.  There's a special on Saturday on Fuse and apparently a 3-D documentary to follow.

All in all, another great weekend in Chicago.  Really crowded, but everything seems to run very smoothly.

Kosmo, were you talking about me? I saw 56 bands this weekend, albeit some no more than 3 songs, but always at least 3 songs. I was really impressed by how well the festival was run. Cheap food, lots of water and bathroom areas, and only a few areas where sound bled across to another stage.

Seeing Depeche Mode was a highlight, even if some of their performance was a little mailed in. Bat for Lashes was awesome, can't wait till Saturday to see her inside. Miike Snow and Hey Champ both impressed me, as did Rise Against and Silversun Pickups. And seeing Tool grind like a machine at night with their visuals was pretty damn cool, fan of the band or not.

Let downs were Lou Reed, both running late and looking like a cadaver up there. The Decemberists just playing Hazards of Love, even though i knew they would. And not being able to deal with the crowds at Santigold. Very happy three days for me.

Lolla was awesome as always. I just love Chicago. Smart move with Lolla giving out free water during the day to keep everyone hydrated on Sunday. The same goes for all the ponchos on Friday. APW has a lot to learn. Rain nor extreme heat made for late starts. They were really on the ball with making sure everyone was ok. Security was extremely helpful in the very front with making sure people had water and were ok.

Sunday was awesome. Was on the rail during Friendly Fires set. Around the time Ed mentioned he was about to pass out, I was near to that point. Security was close to pulling me out. It was so insanely hot and dancing up a storm made for a complete meltdown. I somehow finished off their set in front and headed straight for water.

Yuto Miyazawa (on the kidz stage) was quite awesome. The kids had some amazing talent on the stages.

Mike's Pawn Shop was pretty cool from the few songs I did catch. And Ill take the shadiness of BMI Stage anytime.

Wasnt too impressed with Cage The Elephant so took off to get a good spot for Kaiser Chiefs. They never disappoint live and pulled off a really great set. Ricky is a great frontman and worked the crowd.

Didnt last too long for Raveonettes - just way too hot, but they did sound great from where I was (next to the soundbooth). Caught someone spinning in the dance tent and they were just awesome.

Passion Pit was hot and sweaty and overly crowded. Was a really great set and it seemed that stage was a mob scene. Everyone was super into it and dancing up a storm. They were lots of fun.

Really liked the rest of the night. Lou Reed was great even tho lots of sound problems. Heard Band of Horses from the main stage as I ended up really close on the left side during Jane's set. I did catch BoH the previous day on the Kidz stage. Jane's Addiction was easily one of the highlights. Had never seen them before and Perry is an awesome front man. It seems everyone I know dislikes Dave Navarro but he was pretty awesome up there. Stop! was really great live, a total frenzy in the pit and lots of crowd surfers. Closing out the set with Joe Perry on 'Jane Says' was simply awesome. Nice to see the faces of C3 who put together this awesome festival.

Sunday was easily my favorite day, but dealing with the intense heat wasnt so much fun. Ill take the rain any day over the sun. It was great to finally NOT come home with a sunburn.

Friday:
Despite the rain - there were lots of great bands to see.
Loved the Henry Clay People. Have been listening to them for awhile now and they were fun to see live.

Then saw the electro-dance set Hey Champ. Had been wanting to see them for way too long and they were very excited to be playing in their home town. Everyone was dancing and having a great time. "Cold Dust Girl" was really awesome live and around this time I didnt even notice the rain anymore.

Made it up to the front for White Lies set. Their sound was really great and the addition of a new song is really great. Harry sounded amazing and thankfully didnt have vocal problems :) It was kind of fitting with their dark, gloomy music to be catching it in the rain. Reminded me of seeing Interpol in the rain a few years back there.

Caught Bon Iver and was pleasantly surprised. They were really great. Then caught Crystal Castles set. Cant say musically Im that impressed with them, but as far as having a great time dancing in the rain with a bunch of people from Mexico - AWESOME! Im not even sure if Alice was singing most the time or just dancing. They didnt pull off the full hour so I headed back to see The Decemberists. What a waste for me. I was so bored and where I was everyone was talking and no one was into it. Im not sure Hazards of Love works at a festival, would have loved to have seen them play their hits. So instead walked back to see Of Montreal. They were easily the highlight of my Friday. Kevin looked great as always. He even had Janelle Monae at the festival with them, and they played "Moonage Daydream" (Bowie cover). Sounded really great again. Everyone at the stage seemed to be huge fans and were dancing and singing along. Some of the theatrics were gone which were nice as its become a bit overkill. The setlist was just awesome, I mean sure we can always wish for earlier and earlier stuff but I was beyond happy with what I got.

1. Nonpareil of Favor
2. Bunny Ain't No Kind Of Rider
3. Id Engager
4. For Our Elegant Caste
5. Moonage Daydream (David Bowie cover)
6. The Party's Crashing Us
7. Rapture Rapes the Muses
8. A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger
9. Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games
10. Beware Our Nubile Miscreants
11. Touched Something's Hollow
12. An Eluardian Instance
13. Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse
14. She's A Rejecter

And they ended the set with some of the people from their show crowd surfing in a raft (reminded me of Girl Talk). It was the perfect lead up to Depeche Mode.

DM put on a great show. It felt a bit lackluster at times and seemed short (they were off at 9:30 - and came back for one encore) but I love their music and hadnt seen them in ages. So it was great to see them again. They had great videos to watch. "A Question of Time" and "Never Let Me Down AGain" were prob 2 of my favorite songs from their set. I am not so into their new stuff and really wanted to hear "Master and Servant" which friends said they were playing on this tour. Overall great Friday.

Saturday: felt like one of the more boring days. Not a lot I wanted to see so ended up catching a bunch of bits and pieces of sets.

The newno2 were pretty entertaining. Wouldnt be able to recognize a song if I ever heard it again, but it was good at the time. Really liked Living Things - reminded me of the hair bands of the 80's and there was a lot of 'support our troops' talk, but it worked. Couldnt really get into Miike Snow and ended up taking off to see Quinn Sullivan on the Kidz Stage. I really wanted to see Buddy Guy perform and that was really awesome. The kid (who I think is 10) was amazing - then pairing it up with Buddy Guy - mindblowing. Then caught some of Los Campesinos!, Robert Earl Keen and Band of Horses on the Kidz stage. BoH were great with the kids. Played a song from Gabba Gabba Gabba (prob the wrong kids show) but the kids were quite excited. Started the set with "Is There a Ghost". Was lots of fun. Saw some of Gomez at some point. Then went to see Arctic Monkeys as friends were huge fans. It had to be one of the most boring sets ever. Alex just seemed so stiff and bored. Friends were disappointed as thats who they came to the festival for (saturday ticket holders only). Then caught some of Santigold and by that time the dance tent was going strong. We hung out there for quiet awhile LA Riots were ok, but really wanted to catch Diplo. And that was awesome. He looked so professional in his suit/tie and he got the dance floor moving. Then caught some of TV on the Radio. Something was definitely lacking and took off to head over to meet friends for Tool.

My memories of Tool are mostly from high school as everyone I knew listened to them. So friends told me I had to see them in Chicago, as they knew Id never go out to just see them. Never found my friends, but met tons of cool people. The videos were something else to watch, Im sure those images will stay in my head forever. Maynard is amazing live. Their set sounded really great. I knew more songs than I thought I would. Their light show was really great and their sound was perfect.

ok that was really long - basically Ill take Lollapalooza any time over APW based on my own experiences.

Really enjoyed this year despite the weather.

Best:

-Ezra Furman & the Harpoons (probably the best band I've not heard prior to the fest)
-The Gaslight Anthem (best non-headliner)
-Band of Horses
-Heartless Bastards (esp. opening for the Decemberists at the Metro)
-The Decemberists (2x)
-Yeah Yeah Yeahs (best headliner)
-Depeche Mode
-Miike Snow (2x)
-Lykke Li (afterparty)
-The Raveonettes (afterparty)
-Dan Deacon w/ What Cheer? / No Age / Deerhunter, Ed Schraeder (afterparty)
-Fleet Foxes
-Andrew Bird
-The Delta Spirit
-Hey Champ
-Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears
-Gang Gang Dance
-Bat For Lashes
-Friendly Fires

Somewhat disappointed:

-Vampire Weekend
-Arctic Monkeys
-Los Campesinos! (except for cover of Pavement's "Box Elder")
-Lou Reed

Worst:

-Silversun Pickups (they could use some coaching from Band of Horses, because none of their songs stick to your head, musically at least...lyrics are laughable.........there are no secrets this year let's make this perfectly clear!!!! WTF? maybe grade school kids assembled lyrics for them...in that case, I forgive them).
-Airborne Toxic Event  (really awful................)

never mind they haven't gone on sale yet the lolla board about tickets is very helpful as they will tell you if they went on sale or not.  It was a glitch in the system for over an hour but today might be te day  ;D

not so sure about that.  they're filling in a page a minute if not more, impossible to keep up.easier to just refresh the website.  plus, you have these JERKS who keep saying "on sale NOW!!!!111" :D

I owe thanks to eros - he hooked me up with the direct link to the FG page.  I was refreshing it randomly all day, as much as worked allowed, and happened to get a luck hit.  I easily could have missed it.

Uh, xnwx - if your friend is a doctor, can't he/she afford full price?!? :)

LOL! Well hes here on loan from Vancouver for about a year or two. No clue what hes actually doing and if theyre paying him well. Then again - no clue if Canadian doctors make good money either.

Besides, if it werent for him I wouldnt have met up with a friend of mine from high school that I hadnt seen in 17 years, and I wouldnt have seen Tool. I guess that was my thank you to him :)

early bird tickets for next year's festival are now on sale, $175 until the supply runs out.  that's the same price as this year's early birds.  http://www.lollapalooza.com/tickets/index.html

what's with lolla selling tickets this far in advance?  my theories:
1) next year's festival will have something big that they need a lot of cash for, upfront.
2) they'll invest the money for 6 months and make some extra coin that way
3) they're hoping that a percentage of people who buy tickets this far in advance won't attend, therefore they can sell more tickets.
4) the organizers are raking in the money while they can and will be disappearing to some third world country with the cash.  there will be no lolla 2010.

thoughts?
Title: Re: Lollapalooza Lineup
Post by: Sage 703 on August 17, 2009, 05:21:19 pm
I think it is way simpler than any of that - they have a captive audience now who just got back from the festival, presumably had a great time, and may be more inclined to make an impulse buy for next year than they would be in say, six months.

3) they're hoping that a percentage of people who buy tickets this far in advance won't attend, therefore they can sell more tickets.
How would this work exactly? How would they know how many of the early orders weren't going to come so they could then print up and re-sell that number of tickets?

considering what coachella, sasquatch and even bonaroo have on offer, things aren't looking good for lola.  almost has me excited for APW.

I think this lineup is the indication that we have reached "peak festival".

The headliners are too past-their-prime touring veterans and the third is Florence & The Machine.  All of this supported by three days' worth of mostly third-tier nobodies.

Too many festivals competing for the available talent.

Two possibilities

- they want to be on the cutting edge with real up and coming artists along with a few well known headliners and become the premier festival in America

or

- they knew it would sell out talent unseen so they figured they could put out a cheap lineup with a couple of token headliners, thus maximizing profits

Since it's now Live Nation running the show I'll go with the latter.
