Usually hurricanes don't phase me but I'm not at all looking forward to this one, especially considering that most of the models so far seem to indicate that the eye is heading start dead on my way. Hoping that I don't have to evacuate. Hell, hoping the land is still above water after it's all over!
Frank, how's it doing along your stretch of the beach? Hope okay.

I know there are bigger things to worry about, but right now I'm thinking I may never get to see a Heartless Bastards show in DC.

You can't drive in the rain?
-
there could be sustained winds of 70mph+ or so. Depending on the track, it could be a lot like Isabel.....I would rather not experience that again. Could be worse for Philly rather than here this time though.
Google put up a nifty crisis map for this: http://google.org/crisismap/sandy-2012

I am just glad I'm not getting married this time. Got married 2 days after Isabel on the water in Havre de Grace. No power, lots of generators, ran out of ice, but most importantly, not booze.

Oh, it was 70° here today and absolutely beautiful, especially considering that it's the end of October. The past week has been wonderful and even went up to 75° a few days ago.
I was going to go swimming the other day but opted instead to go to the Farmers Market in Berlin since after this month it will be over until next spring. Spent the day there and had a great time.
In the meantime, everything has still been great but leave it to stupid Comcrap to act like the storm has hit already. The Weather Channel, the local Government Access Channel and the Resort Channel have dropped out their video. Even the audio dropped out for a short time about 10 minutes ago. Just what we need! Thank God I have the internet.
Tomorrow will not be fun at work with all of the very concerned people calling and asking us questions that we don't have answers to. It's just those who expect us to have an in with the weather gods as though all has already been written in stone who make it so difficult. It will be busy!
From what I'm hearing (again, no visuals), it's been downgraded but can easily pick up strength as it moves along. Of course, even if the hurricane portion of it dies down by it comes this way, it doesn't mean all will be clear.
Hey Walkie, you might get snow! :o

Hope you make it back safely.

I was out walking my dog and got hit by water from someone's lawn sprinkler. On October 27. A day before the hurricane. They had TWO lawn sprinklers going. Welcome to the burbs.
For the record, they had an Obama sign on that lawn.
-
today, i saw a father beating his kid because she didn't rake the leaves to his satisfaction.
for the record, there was a "vote for romney" sign on the lawn.

If I had a dollar for every time I've said that...

I'm calling bust on this. Everyone is too well prepared.
-
Yeah, well good luck with that.

Comcrap came back on later that night. I never, ever watch tv but when I want, or even need to, it doesn't want to cooperate.
Still in town and plan to ride out the storm, barring a complete evacuation or other. I got the skinny on the partial evac. about 24 hours before it was released to the public so had a bit more time to think this out. Ultimately, I've decided that all that driving to and from would be more dangerous than staying. My building is pretty strong and the location is a little better than some. They did evacuate downtown and aren't allowing people to go through there short of necessity. Brought all of the patio furniture and plants inside.
Currently, the wind is blowing and there's a little rain. Not much to speak of as of yet. More wind than rain so far. The bay has risen just below the pier but seems to have gone down some in the past couple hours, probably due to tide levels. That's what I'm really keeping an eye on.
Here's a great page to play around with for various weather maps:

From the front lines:
(Bold is mine.)
"Ocean City Emergency Services is continuing to monitor the projected path of Hurricane Sandy. At this time the path remains consistent with initial forecasts, estimating sustained winds at 40-45 mph and gusts between 55-60 mph. Approximately 10 inches of rain is expected, which will result in severe flooding when combined with the storm and tidal surges.
At approximately 9 a.m. today, October 28, the Town of Ocean City implemented Phase II of the Emergency Evacuation Plan. Due to the severe flooding which is expected during the storm, a mandatory evacuation of all residents in the downtown area (south of 17th Street) was issued and was effective immediately. All residents in these areas must evacuate before 8 p.m. today. All non-resident property owners, vacationers and visitors must also evacuate by the 8 p.m. deadline. In addition, a voluntary evacuation order is in place for residents and occupants of known low lying areas.
Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan declared a local State of Emergency, issuing an order to close the beach to all persons until further notices. In addition, the inlet lot will be closed beginning at 5 p.m. and will not reopen for the duration of the storm, which is expected to last two to three days.
The Ocean City Police Department, with the assistance of the Maryland State Police, has conducted and finished a door-to-door notification of the mandatory evacuation zone. A hard road closure will be set at 17th Street and Coastal Highway beginning at 5 p.m. today. In addition, Route 50 will be closed at Inlet Isle Lane for entry into Ocean City. Route 90 will remains open both ways at this time.
During the storm, the Town of Ocean City will be posting storm related information on various websites, social media outlets, through the GovDelivery system and the television access channel. Citizens are asked to tune into Ocean City?s Government Access Channel (4 & 15) for further detailed information or advisories. To subscribe to GovDelivery, visit the ?City Wide Alerts? tab on the Town of Ocean City?s website at http://oceancitymd.gov."

I'm fine so far. My building is very sound, electricity still on and no need to go anywhere. Unfortunately, our pier is underwater as well as our neighbor's. Saw a photo on the news showing the pier and part of the gazebo at Fager's Island underwater. Sorry about that NKOTB as I know that place holds a special place in your heart. That was all during high tide which was about an hour ago but no sign of receding as of yet. Actually, I expect it to get worse. No plans to venture out to witness anything else. I'm not that adventurous!
About 4:30 in the morning the fire alarm went off in a neighboring building. There was no way in hell that I was going out in that mess unless my senses told me there was something more to it than the storm setting it off. The fire department came and it was okay, as I knew all too well.
Here's a portion of the latest update from the Town:
"The projected path is continuing to follow the predicted forecast. At this time the storm is expected to be at its worse between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. today, with estimated sustained winds at 40-50 mph with possible gusts reaching hurricane strength. Approximately 10 inches of rain is expected, which will result in severe flooding in low lying areas when combined with the storm and tidal surges.
The Emergency Operation Center is fully staffed and operating 24 hours. Ocean City Emergency Responders, including fire and police personnel, have responded to numerous weather related premise alarms and fire alarm activations, however; no injuries have been reported at this time. At approximately 7 a.m. today, the Ocean City fishing pier was significantly damaged after losing several pieces throughout the storm."
-
Just realized that my neighbor's boat sunk. Someone I don't know who lives in the property next door. Only just realized it minutes ago while taking some photos and noticed this small white boat top. I've always had a sense that one day that thing was going to sink. Thought about it many times. Have seen that thing go through lots of rockin' and rollin' in the past. Sorry it happened.
Water has come over their pier onto land on their property but ours seems to be holding strong so far. (Crossing fingers!) That poor place has had it bad this year. They've had a major fire, their a/c units are now flooded, water flowing along their property, their pier flooded out and now a sunken boat. Our piers are flooded but that's all I've witnessed as of yet. Odd how so close yet so different.
Back to hunkering down.
-
Oh, shit! Something just blew up. At least, that's what it sounded like. Have no idea what. Sounded like it was a few blocks away up towards Coastal Highway. A generator maybe. Don't know yet.
-
I am at work because my company is greedy for money and is not closed. I am sure it will be open tomorrow. They didn't close at all for the big snow storms a couple years back.

oh and my morning commute was pretty easy as no one else was on the road.

NKOTB, brace yourself. Just heard that the Fager's Island gazebo was washed away. :'(
It's bad here. Really bad. I'm fine but the town isn't. And Sandy is still only about 88 miles off the coast and it's picked up speed. Hopefully, she'll be out of here that much faster.
DO NOT TAKE THIS STORM LIGHTLY!!! STAY HOME!!!!!

Miami does not think DC's horse masked man (http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2012/10/hurricane_sandy_a_message_to_t.php) is funny.
(By comparison, Miami thought the face-eating incident was hilarious.)

Bruce Springsteen, ?4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)"
-
jags . . . where is your song for this thread!!??
for shame.
I'm getting personal here.
"Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" - Otis Redding
Except the docks are now gone. You'd be shocked if you saw how bad and massive the damage is and I have a front row seat. All kinds of waves rushing over the bulkheads and crap, like pier planks, floating all over the bay. Eventually realized that 2 different boats had sunk next door. Don't know if we lost any. If so, they're underwater and you can't see them. I've never seen anything like this in my life.
Any snow for you yet, Walkie?
-
Just heard that Merriweather is flooded out. Sorry, Seth.
Was there a secret Radiohead show there tonight?
-
we still have power here and no flooding although parts of the yard are getting really water logged..
hoping for the best for everyone

considering Asbury Park was run over by water I'd say Springsteen's Sandy is the song..

"So what's your status?"
So maybe I'm just jaded, but i'm assuming the above text message I received from my boss an hour ago is not him checking to see if I'm alive and/or OK, but seeing if I have power and internet access so I may work from home.
And of course, I tell him "up and running."
Why do I do this?
-
I'm calling bust on this. Everyone is too well prepared.
i wouldnt say complete bust but the DC area definitely could have experienced a LOT worse. I wonder if the derecho actually helped in that regard with culling out any weakened trees and possibly having pepco fortify things a little more against future storms

My co-workers were all at the office yesterday (I got very rare permission to work from home). Most are here today. No one ever called to check in on us. Nice.
Our house seeped water through a bedroom window and the basement, but our power stayed on in Columbia all night.
i love people . . . for reasons such as these.

Drove from Springfield to Centreville last night to hang out with some friends because I was told I wouldn't have to come into my office this morning. Driving wasn't so bad, but the wind gusts were intense and it whipped rain around like crazy. There was debris all over the place and I'm sure it continued through the night. Power stayed on at my house, also stayed on at my friends house.
This morning I set my alarm for 7:45 and 8:45 and had not been contacted by my office. My boss had said "assume you have the day off unless I contact you", so I figured I was in the clear. I got a phone call at 10:15 asking where I was. Turns out my boss had texted me at 9:15, but since it was a mass text message I didn't get it because I didn't have my 4G on. So, now I'm in my office. My neighborhood is a mess, but no real damage, couple tress down, one across a street but that street leads to another neighborhood so I was able to get onto the main road. Other than that nothing crazy.
-
although parts of the yard are getting really water logged..
fuck man, you alrite?!? what about the flower beds? insurance?!?
on our end, the grill got knocked over and there is soggy charcoal spread across the back patio. it's brought the missus and i closer together.

If by 'bust' you mean 'all busted up', than you would be right. ::)
Here on the coast, it's a real mess. Lots of busted up stuff, flooded out places and other damage. You guys got lucky. Very, very lucky!
Being in a very sound building and not on the ground or top floor, I figured it would be safer for me to stay put rather than chance all of the low lying roads and bridges regardless of which routes I would take. Made the right choice.
Talked with my boss this morning and the place is closed. Though my power is fine and didn't even get as much as a flicker, theirs is out. Their phones are out but mine are fine. No water damage at all at my place but they were still assessing the water damage but there definitely is water that found its way in. I'm just glad that I had been scheduled to be off. Read online that they would be closed but didn't get a call to come in if I wanted until too late to hear my voice mail. By the time I called in, they decided that I not come in anyway as it turned out there really wasn't much for me to do. Don't know how it will affect the following days. Then again, I may pick up some extra time since I've got the easiest commute compared to others who live over the various bridges.
Raging blizzards in Western Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Yes Virginia, there is life outside of DC. ::)
-
29 people dead..so far..
At least someone else recognizes that this wasn't just some minor leaf blower.
-
What you experienced last night is called "autumn" in Ireland.
haha. I wrote something similar to someone last night!
No. VA got lucky other than a few trees down. We've had our share though in blizzards, and the recent floods and derecho, and follow up storm. Obviously not as bad as what they see in other states or from Sandy.
And I get the whole work thing - got up at 5:30 am yesterday - no announcements or replies to my emails until about 8...and I had a meeting so I just cashed it in, hoping I could nap at some point. Yeah, that didn't happen. When I zipped out for a little bit at noon the wind picked up, but didn't again until 2 pm, then 6 pm, the 8pm. I noticed the winds were not steady they would come in gusts then die down...not sure if that helped where I was located. (interesting theory brenns about weakened trees being yanked in recent storms)
Glad you are okay, Jaggy. :*
-
29 people dead..so far..
At least someone else recognizes that this wasn't just some minor leaf blower.
I don't think the storm in general was a leaf blower, but in the DC area proper, it was a leaf blower comparing it to even Derecho.

This drives me fucking insane. NO essential work communication should be sent via any medium other than phone call. You can't fuck up a phone call. You can't send a phone call and "not receive it" if the caller leaves a voice mail (assuming cell phone service is in place around the region). And because you are a fucking grownup and a fucking professional, if no one answers when you call, you keep calling until someone answers your call.
Seriously, how difficult is this, no matter if you have to call one or 20 people?
Oppressed Employee: Hello?
Boss: Hey Joe Blow, just got the order that we are indeed working today, see you in the office.
Oppressed Employee: Got that, boss. See you in an hour.
Instead of all the himming and hawing over "did you get my text/email????"
On the other hand, you can "not" receive text messages and too many people assume everyone has internet and phones hooked up to work email, nevertheless working power and/or cable and internet.
We've had major communication fails from my work's HQ all morning. Not one single person from HQ sent an email regarding DC or NYC offices being open, despite doing as much Sunday night, and other than my BS status check, we've had no ACTUAL DIRECTION from my superiors as to whether we're working from home today or not.
But because it's shitty out and I hate fighting these STUPID fucking battles my work makes me fight, I'm working like normal from home.

Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon - come Armageddon!
Come, Armageddon! Come!
Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard :
"How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here"
In the seaside town
That they forgot to bomb
Come, come, come - nuclear bomb
Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands
(And on your face...)
(On your face...)
(On your face...)
(On your face...)
Everyday is like Sunday

Share some greased tea with me
