I spoke with Seth..

Its Hoborock I

that is the title.. its going to be like the Super Bowl except for DC/Baltimore/Richmond hoborock bands/artists.. the ones Killsally is always checking out... Seth feels that local bands are under represented at the 930 and this will give them a platform to connect with the community...Its going to be kind of Dickordy..$5 cover..all ages...

my only question is why does it say 9:30 9:30 at the bottom
twice?
designwise what kind of decision was that

I should have named this thread....just pull the most gigantically twisted thought out of your sphincter and put it in this thread

the "double say" is the internationally recognized lingo convention for hobo rockers...

The 2nd 930 leans towards the left to represent the v street location, while the 1st 930 represents the f street location.

**EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT THE 9:30 WORLD'S FAIR!**

The legendary 9:30 Club celebrates 35 years as one of the most iconic music venues in the world this year. The Club has received the highest accolades from some of the most notable names in music?Rolling Stone, Billboard and Pollstar have all named 9:30 Nightclub of the Year.

Beginning January 5 and running through January 7, the 9:30 Club will host a free World?s Fair exhibition celebrating the double anniversary. The event will be an all-encompassing experience highlighting the historic past and present of the 9:30 Club and chronicling 35 years of memories and memorabilia from musicians, staff and fans. Attendees will be immersed in interactive visuals and jaw-dropping historical imagery. A limited number of free tickets, each with specific hourly admittance times, will be available through ticketfly.com beginning Monday, December 7 at 10:00 A.M. Eastern. (Links: http://bit.ly/930WorldsFair1, http://bit.ly/930WorldsFair2, http://bit.ly/930WorldsFair3)

In addition, a limited, first-edition, 264-page hardcover book will be issued to commemorate 35 years of the Club. The book will feature never-before seen photos, stories and firsthand accounts of experiences during the 9:30 Club?s tenure from legends including D.C. icon Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi, Dischord Records), Chuck D of Public Enemy and Sarah McLachlan, the Club?s current co-owners Seth Hurwitz and Rich Heinecke and scores more. Fans can pre-order the book on ticketfly.com beginning Monday, December 7 and 10:00 A.M. Eastern. The book will first be available at the Club?s World?s Fair, with pre-orders shipping in January. The 9:30 Club is famous for its email list of more than 600,000 loyal followers, so the book is likely to sell out quickly. See a preview of the book at www.930book.com.

Founded by Dody DiSanto and Jon Bowers, the 9:30 Club originally opened in 1980 in downtown Washington, D.C. The Club?s name was derived from its street address, 930 F St NW. In 1996, co-owners Rich Heinecke and Seth Hurwitz moved the Club to its current location at the eastern end of the U Street Corridor. Gracing its stage have been legends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Al Green, Nirvana, and James Brown; recently-discovered acts like Hozier, Drake, Kacey Musgraves, Ed Sheeran, Leon Bridges, Twenty One Pilots, and Halsey; and arena acts looking for an intimate club play such as Justin Timberlake, Jack White, Pink, the Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters. It is the most attended club of its size in the world.

Ok...so 1 hour tour of memorabilia and interactive imagery?

Not saying I won't attend and it won't be interesting

but does that mean we're going to get a hologram of a minor threat show at the old 9:30

will it replicate the smell of the old bathroom too?

will we get to go backstage?

Music?

the images are from original graphic artist Mark Holmes' postcards, his entire series of them (1980-84) is on display in the backbar.

Are you saying is you were asked by Seth to be a part of the  memorabilia and interactive imagery exhibition?

now you want us to do a 'recruit Elizabeth warren' style PAC to to get you to go

I'm sure people got 4 tickets (I didn't) and only need one or two

Also try emailing the FWB crew, would hope they could hook some long term boradies up

or you could wait out in front the day of and walk around with Yada and this sign

Also in the late 80s (perhaps the same day), I had an opportunity to meet Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff. They were just a few feet away but I declined. I was working in the headquarters for Waxie Maxies and they were dragged in to meet an account. They clearly didn't want to be there; both of them took seats at a table and put their heads down. I really wasn't a fan anyway so I let them be. But instead of being entitled punks, I just saw them as two very tired up-and-comers who really just wanted some sleep. They were still at the stage in their careers when their label bosses told them when and where to piss.

You left out the best part: "It was Dark Star Orchestra, which is a Grateful Dead cover band. Apparently there was a gentleman ? and I use that term loosely here ? who turned out to be a New Jersey State Senator, who had relieved himself in public from the second floor, and turned it into a ?VIPee? section."

Any feedback? I got the email saying they're doing t shirt printing of famous concert posters, offering free 930 Club tattoos, rebuilding parts of the old 930 Club and doing tour of the backstage? This sounds so cool!

Even though I've been backstage a few times  ::) :P I'm stoked!!

My one thought was "how can you recreate the old club without the smell?"

well that's easy

we will make it smell

I can still remember the old Club smell vividly. That odor would cling to me for days, like the Seinfeld BO episode. It was like a cross between sweat, smoke, stale beer, and something incredibly acrid...maybe rat piss. And yet I'll never forget how excited I was coming from a city like Chicago to see bands on that tiny stage. The first time I saw the 9:30 stage I laughed. It was so low, the place was so intimate. But to see Helmet, Oasis, Urge Overkill, Lloyd Cole, Bob Mould, Teenage Fanclub, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Catherine Wheel in that tiny space was so fun, so amazing. In a few years I felt like I was there every week...it was like a second home. The musicians often had just as good a time as the audience. I'm bummed I wasn't living in DC when Iggy Pop played there. It was one of the first places I had ever been in where you could lock eyes with a musician and they'd sing to you, and that changed the way concerts felt to me. I cannot wait for tonight.

And yes, the rats really were that out of control. I went backstage when Bob Mould played in 1993 and was let out the back of the club and I had to walk around to F Street. It was like something out of Indiana Jones. There were dead rats littering the alley, but also dozens of live ones that I was running through and stepping on to try to get away from them. It's not an exaggeration.

Interestingly enough the first time I went into the "main" green room was just about 2 weeks ago when my buddy Willy played. Other than that I ended up in the smaller green rooms. I like the semi-catwalk-ish that overlooks the left side of the stage. Cool little vantage point. Can't wait to check out the tour!

It was really good! Walked in not knowing what to expect and it definitely  exceeded my expectations
the music, the memorabilia and the video (and interviews) were all just great
Was there almost 2 hours and didn't even realize it (like any good show at the 9:30)

Thanks Seth and the 930 staff

I saw on Twitter a couple pictures people had taken of the Artists CDs from their first show at the club, which is a pretty cool thing to do.  Also, I own two of the albums they had highlighted in the vinyl collection.  Minor Threat and Tommy Keene..

It was a pretty incredible experience. Thank you Seth and all the 9:30 folks through the years that made the WF possible. Lots of emotions...mostly good, but I was also really missing people like Josh, Big Phil and Mike Sims. I've celebrated birthdays at the club, major life events. When I start to think beyond the music and to all the people I've known over the years, the 9:30 is a focal point in my life. It's the one place I always have a great time, where I feel at home. So much to reflect on, and what's cool about the WF is that it gives you a lot of flashbacks. Going with Bombay and Lily really reminded me of so many things I had forgotten about. I'm still processing the evening, sorry if I'm disjointed. It was tremendous. Oh, and the book is cool as hell too.

Wasn't packed at all.  you could do it quick, but there is just a lot of stuff to look at and see.
Doing it in 10-15 mins could be done if that's your only option
but I'd say to really get the immersive experience and see/hear everything you need 90 mins

Don't really want to spoil it for others...but their ability to recreate the 'experience' of shows back in the day and the modern era was like Virtual reality
although...did smell more like potpourri than the old club, thankfully they didn't nail that

was also a little disjointing to leave that back way into a brightly lit Landmark movie theater.

What really struck me is the flood of memories of people it brought back. Not just the concerts or the performances...in that regard, the WF really hits the mark because it makes you feel the soul of the club. I realize I've spent a lot of time there and have a lot to look back on, but I guarantee you there aren't many venues like that in this country. You won't get that from a House of Blues. You might get it from the Fillmore SF or the Metro in Chicago. Even all of NYC's venues have changed at some point in time or gone corporate, like Irving Plaza. That's part of what makes the 9:30 so special.

No tiny stages in Chicago that had the big names that the 9:30 had. You're not going to win that argument. The Double Door didn't exist at that point.

I'm going tomorrow night, so excited! Was originally going to take my mom but she can't go, so my sister is going with me instead. I missed the old club by about 3 years, but that doesn't mean I haven't vicariously lived through the stories of others.

I know I've shared this before, but the first time I went to a show at the 930 club, I was 13 and it was September 1998. I was excited to see live music, but little did I know at the time, I'd fall in love with the place. For a 13 year old girl from rural western MD, the club became my idea of heaven. I wasn't the weird girl in school when I was seeing bands at the club. Instead, I was the lucky cool girl because my parents brought me out to see bands I loved. Various patrons I'd meet back then always seemed impressed that someone so young loved real music unlike the stuff my peers at school listened to at the time. In high school and my first 2 years of college at Frostburg State, I referred to the club as my living room because every time I was there, it was with my family. The Lahmans became so well known to the staph, Josh would ask me how my parents were whenever I'd see him somewhere. I guess a family of four coming all the way from Frostburg was rather memorable. When I went off to University of Maryland, the club quickly became my home away from home. Truth be told, I transferred  to UMD for journalism, college radio and because it meant I would be so close to the club.

Considering I've seen so many shows and I've been on this forum since high school (2001 I think),  I feel so lucky to be part of the culture that this place has created. Cheers to everyone! And much love and thanks to Seth and all the staph. May the club be around for at least a century if not two!

Had a blast. Went with a group of friends. At one point we had all split up and were off on our own. It was funny watching one of the documentary clips on the 2nd floor talking about how much culture was happening in the old 930 Club building. Music and art, and how they felt they were going to be losing that going to the new building. I'd love to hear what they think about the U St Corridor culture now lol.

It was so cool. Had a lot of fun! Probably took about an hour to look, read, listen, watch, and appreciate all the things they did.

I was really pleased with the whole event. It was very nostalgic for me. I didn't move to the DC area until the beginning of 1995, so I never attended a concert at 930 F Street, but I still have almost 19 years of memories of the 9:30 Club on V Street. I was watching the video in the little room that's next to the dressing room, and the talking head reminisced about the Moby show when the power went out, and I was like "Hey, I was at that show!" And then the concert posters... Hey, I have that TV on the Radio show poster! Hey, I was at both of those Wilco shows on that poster! Loved seeing the early footage of Nick Cave, especially. Saw some video from a couple of shows I attended. That was cool. I was hoping to catch some video of an early R.E.M. show, since they're my favorite band, but no such luck. I did take lots of pics of memorabilia from various R.E.M. shows of the past though.

Overall, getting into the backstage dressing room was probably the best part. Getting to walk around on the stage was probably the second best part. I told Kosmo on Facebook that I was a little disappointed they didn't open up the DJ booth. It's mostly storage space now, he said, but I would've liked to have seen the view from up there just once.

The "Hall of Records" was a nice touch. It took me a while, but I eventually found the CD for the headliner of my first 9:30 Club show and took a picture of it.

I picked up my copy of the book and bought the V Street poster. The sign under the V Street poster said it was signed and numbered. It's not numbered at all, for the record, not my copy anyway. Just a word of warning there. But I like it anyway. I need another concert poster like I need a hole in my head, but it was hard to resist. Read most of the 9:30 book the other evening, and it's jam packed with info and pics and interviews. Excellent graphic design. I'm very pleased with it.

Free cupcake on the way out was a nice touch.

I think I saw Bearman and Bombay Chutney there (Tuesday night), but it's been many years since I've run into you guys, so I wasn't 100% sure and didn't say anything.

Nobody dug the Soul and Ink live screen-printing?  I met them at a festival last year, super nice people and had a cool t-shirt made for cheap.  There were slight imperfections because they were doing it outdoors on a windy day... I want to see how it is in a controlled environment.

I saw the silk screens, but I didn't see anything actually happening there. I would say they were underutilized. They could've used a sign. I didn't know what they were for or how much it cost. Were they free? Ditto for the tattoos. Later, "Bags" on Facebook said the tattoos were free. Not that I would've gotten one, but I didn't see a sign saying "free tattoo". Maybe if I had paid more attention to the publicity, I would've known these things, I guess.

Screen printing was $25 for the t-shirt and $10 for a tote the bag and you could choose up to two different designs on them.  There was a choice of the Nirvana setlist on a plate, a schedule from the old club, a black flag flyer and one other flyer who I can't recall right now.

And with all the screens in place the view from the DJ booth wouldn't have been very far ;)

edit: that was awesome

To the people of color question..,. There were way more than that represented.   Heck in the hallway outside the downstairs bathrooms,  I counted at least 12 black artists, just there.   I did not keep count for the whole thing, but I think the post you are referencing was a bit hyperbolic ....

I managed to snag a ticket for last night (thanks challenged!) a few highlights:

1) Super fucking cool.

2) Randomly saw Bags at the bar beforehand, who caught my attention ordering "chilled shitty vodka."  Hadn't see her in years and years...great catching up.

3) The rat

4) Walking up the steps and the first thing I see is video of the Jesus Lizard playing the old club.

5) Immediately after getting to thank Seth and shake his hand for the super fucking cool event

6) Immediately after that hearing a group ask "who is that?" in the video.  Told them the Smashing Pumpkins.  Woman says "Oh, I was at that show! Only like 15 people were there!".  And then another ten-ish people all agreed that they were there too.  Weird coincidence, right?  ;)

For a free event, it was nice to drop close to $200 bucks on beers and merch.

The V street one was pretty cool

I normally don't buy the show posters as I don't have any where to display them
the artist RockestareRed did them

I was a little surprised by the one poster that I bought in a long time ended up being rehashed for this

you'd be surprised how hard it is to find a wall to hang things on

unfortunately aesthetics and lack of basement or mancave make hanging posters for rock shows impossible
and my 49% vote on all decorating decisions is a factor

so over on the 930s facebook page, there were several people quite angry saying that black artists weren't represented at all other than a public enemy setlist, bad brains something or the other and like 1 other thing.

Yeah, I got all annoyed at this woman.
930 is and always has been great to black performers (and concert goers)
there was major representation in just about every display there
and they weren't just token things, they were prominent

Not to mention the entire video board/section dedicated solely to gogo and in the green room there was a cutout of Chuck Brown and the hair dryer + story of James Brown! Plus a cool sign for George Clinton's dressing room that I liked a lot  ;D

Some people just like to stir shit up. It wasn't like this was about Jazz in DC and snubbing Duke Ellington or something. Come on.

Real talk - I'm a white gal from rural mountain Maryland. The 930 club was how I learned about Go-go and Chuck Brown when I was a teenager. The lady who lodged that complaint about the exhibit has no clue how much of a multicultural place the club is. It's more than just black or white acts, it's about the fact the venue was and still is a place to learn new music, meet new people and all sorts of things. Plus, I don't know about anyone else, but I feel the crowds I saw last night at the exhibit displayed loudly just how diverse the club is in terms of its history, culture, roots, etc.

Here's the thing that pisses me off... I'm cool about talking about race, but this lady should've checked her privilege at the door. According to the article WAMU published - yeah they did an interview with her- she saw the exhibit as part of a VIP thing on Tuesday. Per a few club friends I talked to last night - Tuesday night was huge VIP as in the Obamas were there. So I'm doing the math and find it really pompous that considering all the hard work the staph put into this and the fact she was there when the President and the mayor and their families were there - who the hell is she to say crap? I'm not trying to stir anything up. I'm just annoyed how easy it is for someone with an ego to get this attention especially since last night felt like a celebration of everything I love about DC - the 930 club, punk and go-go.

that person is a complete idiot..... it is true there wasn't much in the way of neo-soul -although I did not get to watch the final video which would have that (they were ushering us on because we were the last group) which is what the writer is into but I don't think you have jill scott or erykah badu playing there all the time! if you look at the acts that played the most there they are pretty much white.. except for chuck brown and George Clinton who were both featured extensively

I mean were 50% of the acts that played the 930 club in the 80s black? I don't think so. but to say gogo was not represented would be crazy... its not whitewashing its history but trying to be faithful to it... if you went there and 50% of the photos/videos etc were of black artists well that would not be representative of its history

the city paper article about the 930 club thing has a ton of stuff devoted to go go, George Clinton (alex MacKaye names it his favorite show and has a paragraph telling why)...thievery talks about the skatalites who are black and it goes on and on .. someone talks about seeing Marion Barry before a Public Enemy show...

the closing act at the 930 club's 30th anniversary fest was troublefunk...

and punk is no exclusively white either... what about bad brains?

to me this writer just is into neosoul and didn't think shows she went to were represented but the shows she went to probably account for .1% of the shows the 930 has hosted .. I mean 35 years.. how many shows must that be? like 10,000??? so not every show you go to is going to be there.. and there werea ton of acts that I did not see anywhere but that is inevitable..

frankly, if someone was going to try to stir something up I think the Latino angle would be way better... there was nothing about Latino artists cause they never play there and they should play more often but that is a different story...

I mean you just can't represent every black act in an exhibit about 35 years and while I'm no expert I would be surprised if black acts constituted more than 5% of shows at the 930... I think if anything the 930 club over emphasized them because it is a DC club and these acts have had an outsized influence on DC... everybody knows DC is chocolate city and the headquarters of George Clinton etc etc..

I'm glad the 930 club has decided not to respond to this idiocy but it might be nice to fly down Chuck D or something and ask him what he honestly thinks.. I have a feeling you'd get no complaints from him.

another better case could be made- but I will not as I thought the exhibit was great and representative-  for international music being underrepresented in the "world capital"...DC is a very international city.. where was the international music?

I will admit I dont' think I saw much reference to Toots and I would have liked that.. but maybe I missed that.. but listen you are not going to get everything...

I saw a set list ...by said PE set list
I didn't see any video or brown paraphernalia

That top ten is crazy and cool at the same time
TMBG I would have never guessed, as well as the Roots
The Rev comes in pretty high, being from TX and all
No one will have a chance at taking out the Slickee boys (who I've never seen)

and speaking of GWAR, I can't believe they didn't have any video of that spectacle
guess not really unique to the club, but as we can see from the list, regulars

I will say Alternative Country was really poorly represented. :P......

the set lists they seemed to have started collecting only recently which is a shame.... although the dylan one was from one of his shows in 97 or 98.....both of which i saw...i really want that set list too....

maybe cause we were the last group.. i did not see any screen printing going on....maybe i just missed it...

they had a tape of minor threat's first show??? is that circulating?

obviously some of the video footage is very interesting...

I know that the current band known as Cowboy Mouth has played the club a lot, but I think their number might include nights that the mid 80s Boston band (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZweZbXxmkX0) played (I saw one of those).

well I thought it left a lot to be desired in execution even though I loved the concept but when you actually looked at the cds you noticed  so many albums were simply cases of them printing out the artist name and album title and putting them on the cd spine.. and I'm talking  about very common albums you can get for a $1 at any thrift.. maybe they just thought of the idea late or maybe they really want people to get involved.. seemed odd to me...if they are really going to give you free tickets for providing those cds I need to get on it .. maybe they mean only for proving the missing LPs for the first few years?

now that its over I don't feel like a spoiler in saying I loved the old 930 CLUB POLE being represented there..that was funny as shit..I took a few pictures watching Cave video with the pole there... also loved the blue goo or whatever vodka thingie they were selling...and the stuff about the guy who was the early design guy.. and then sadly died of AIDS...I can't believe his name escapes me but I have a bunch of pictures .. Marc or Mark something or other..Marc Holmes, maybe? it was interesting to read how he provided the club the aesthetic it still has.. I found the old club stuff more interesting..but that's just me..

I also thought based on the setlists they had up there that the idea to hold on to setlists just occurred to them recently.. .except for a couple (Dylan) they were mainly recent setlists even when it was an act that had played there in the 90s the setlist they had was from a few years ago...old 97s and ween came to mind...and since the setlists were sort of dedicated (at least some of them) it seemed like a recent thing they are asking from bands maybe with this in mind or with preserving the clubs history in mind..

also I have to say a word: I had never been to the satellite room.. I get in there and the  smoke was thick and it seemed like every other person was smoking?? I was like whoaaaaaaaaaaa what is going on here// I guess they got an approval cause its sort of meant to be a covered deck???? or maybe they just blew off the law?? it was very bizzare.. now it was true that the main bar did not have smoking but you weren't supposed to go through to the other room, I got the impression but I guess I misunderstood (imust have cause that was wherethe bathroom was) that you weren't supposed to go there until your number/group letter was called.. of course that would be idiocy because what about all the regulars... anyways it was odd.. they had ashtrays... part of me thought "are they trying to replicate the old days allowing smoking and blowing off the rules".. then I thought "maybethey got a permit for smoking with the its a deck argument?" as a former smoker who tries hard not to smoke anymore it was really hard sitting there for 30-40 minutes (cause we were late in being let in) waiting with everyone around me smoking.... with smoking being illegal most everywhere including foreign countries- in restaurants and bars- I found it really bizarre but I must have missed something.. still, the fans were NOT running and the only circulation was that the door was open.. and it wasn't a big door .. maybe it was also because it was the end of the night and they weren't enforcing it? I have no idea... i'm not necessarily coming down on it as I thought it was kind of a fun, if unhealthy and weird, throwback to a now bygone era...

The left side of the satellite room has lots of opening and it's like a deck with cement walls
Typically even if a bunch of people are smoking there, it's not that bad

sucks you had to wait that long to get in
we went right in

The heavy security patdown was somewhat unexpected

what do they mean by "missing albums"? there were a ton of missing CDs that they had just typed out /printed out the names and put in there..too many missing...

That's what I meant by "missing".  There was a sign posted in the hallway adjacent to the LP/CD room explaining that they printed up "dummy" CDs on the fictitious 9:30 Club label, and that if you brought them the real thing, they'd give you a pair of tickets.  Not sure if there are limits on the offer, but yeah, you could go to alot of shows for free....

The deal is also posted here:  http://parklifedc.com/2016/01/06/music-park-930-worlds-fair-930-club-15-1916/

so over on the 930s facebook page, there were several people quite angry saying that black artists weren't represented at all other than a public enemy setlist, bad brains something or the other and like 1 other thing.

i haven't been yet.  thoughts?

Yeah, I got all annoyed at this woman.
930 is and always has been great to black performers (and concert goers)
there was major representation in just about every display there
and they weren't just token things, they were prominent

It's pretty bad when she got called out on everything. Hell I took the artists she was complaining didn't get props, and they were all from the new club, except the Roots who played the last year at the F St location. She then goes on and on to get an article about it, and then posts that article. She's supposedly extended family of the club? I call bullshit on that, and that she was actually at the event in the first place. There's no way you could feel anything was under-represented for the old space. Unbelievable!

I go to Birchmere for the food! ;)

I will say Alternative Country was really poorly represented. :P......

as were the club's DJ's  :'(

Other than Bob Mould, but, yeah, I noticed that myself. :(

Not sure either...as we don't block any content on our firewall (as that's my domain)
I even went in and took the link you posted via googleusercontent.com and posted into chrome and got the same light grey circle with a dash in the center.

Thanks, I was surprised the Mrs let me do it as she handles all of the art in the house. There was a lot in the poster that was in my favor, though: the shadow of Josh, which she knows means a lot to me, the couple, the 9:30 and the fact that the date is our wedding weekend all probably made it happen.

We've had one guest over since we hung it and they noticed the "Song for Josh" single in the front and that poster in the hallway and asked me about it.   Definitely a conversation starter.
