The new NHL season starts tomorrow. Any predictions? High hopes? Wishful thinking?
My predictions:
- Anaheim vs Calgary duke it for the West title
- Ottawa vs Tampa for the East
- President's Cup winner will lose in the second round
High Hopes:
- Montreal finishes fourth in the east and makes it to the second round of the playoffs. Huet doesn't turn out to be a fluke.
- Please, God....let us have an Ottawa vs Calgary final. Then I can watch the finals in total peace.
Wishful Thinking:
- Chris Pronger gets caught cheating with Elisha Cuthbert and gets his ass beaten by Chris Avery (to be fair to Elisha...both their names are Chris. How was she supposed to keep them straight?)
- Domenic Hasek blows out his groin before Christmas (there's a joke in there somewhere)
- Vancouver, normally a place where goalies go to die, thrives with Roberto Luongo
- Todd Bertuzzi gets eaten by a crocodile
-
somewhere, russian secret agents are devising a way to take back evgeni malkin. . .

i think you meant to have that under your "wishful thinking" category... ottawa in the finals involves the Sens doing well in the playoffs - something those chokers are unable to do, ever :)
ottawa vs. montreal for eastern conference championships - loyalties divided, and my head explodes...
the name of this thread is a little unfair - there are hockey fans on this side of the border. not that many, but a few...
-
I will go with a Calgary vs. Montreal stanley cup finals, and i think this is the year for the Habs.
much as i hate to say it.
Playoff teams
Philly, Montreal, Carolina win the divisions
New Jersey, NY Rangers, Pitt, Toronto, Buffalo in as well
work calls, I'll do the rest later
oh, and Kessel for the Calder. :)

That would be bitchen.

Isn't it Sean Avery? At any rate, he's a douche. Calgary v. Buffalo for the Cup, Flames take it in 6, Kipper wins Vezina and Conn Smythe.
-
Blues don't make playoffs but arent the worse team in the league this time, woo hoo, another season to remember!

Oh crap. A perfectly good joke gone to shit.
I'll take your scenario, but then I still have to suffer Stanley Cup Anxiety. An all-Canadian (based) Cup final would leave me stress free.
Ya think Buffalo is for real? They lost McKee - not sure if they reinforced their D. I just worry that teams like Buffalo and Edmonton (teams that overachieve in the playoffs) will buckle under the weight of their own expectations.
There will certainly be darkhorses (who woulda picked any of the conference finalists before last season). It's gonna be a crapshoot with injuries. Youth will lead the day.
Leafs vs Sens at 7:30 tonite!

I know coming from me it means absolutely nothing, but this is the Ducks year!

Oh yeah...they got that Pronger guy and then Niedermayer. Vansmack's opinion seems to concur with what alot of the experts are saying. Ducks all the way. They got the goaltending, they got the best D in the league, and they've got some of the slickest playmakers on skates.
I totally expect them to win the President's Trophy....and then fall apart in the second round. Hopefully a similar fate will await the 'Canes.
4 hrs, 10 mins to The Battle of Ontario. Got my six pack of Molson chilling in the fridge. Can't wait to see Darcy Tucker get bitch-slapped.

i cant wait to see Raycroft let up 5 goals tonight.
(is he even their number 1?)

molson? really, i would have gone for something finer... like moosehead.
aside: is it possible to find sleemans around here? they were selling in boston, i wonder if that delicious nectar made it this far... mmmmm, cream ale... (wow, a hockey conversation turning into a discussion about beer - shocker)

despite the abuse one takes in hockey, some vets manage to eek out lengthy careers in the NHL - i've always admired those who can still play well into their 30's, and kinda breaks my heart when they haven't won the cup yet. below is a list of vets that have never held the cup over their heads - according to this poll (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=cox_damien&id=2611316), Pronger is favored to get off this list. who's your prediction?
More than a dozen very prominent NHLers, all 30 or older, all with at least 650 career games, begin the 2006-07 season hoping against hope that this will finally be the year their personal Cup drought ends. For most or all of them, however, it will continue.
Here's the list:
â?¢ Teppo Numminen, Buffalo Sabres, age 38
â?¢ Priceline: $2.6 million, 1,235 games, 591 points
For years, a reliable, multitalented and honest worker, Numminen came close to at least reaching the Cup finals last season when he and the Buffalo Sabres were stopped in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals.
â?¢ Jeremy Roenick, Phoenix Coyotes, age 36
â?¢ Priceline: $1.2 million, 1,182 games, 1,142 points
The chatty one got to the Cup finals with Chicago back in '92, but he and his Blackhawks were swept by Pittsburgh.
â?¢ Tony Amonte, Calgary Flames, age 36
â?¢ Priceline: $1.85 million, 1,093 games, 870 points.
He's been agonizingly close. He was dealt at the 1994 trading deadline by the Rangers to Chicago, and then watched from a distance as the Rangers ended a 54-year Stanley Cup drought.
â?¢ Mats Sundin, Toronto Maple Leafs, age 35
â?¢ Priceline: $7.6 million, 1,156 games, 1,167 points
The elegant center has won a world title with Sweden and captained his country to Olympic gold earlier this year in Torino. The No. 1 pick of the 1989 draft has twice been to a conference final with the Maple Leafs, but lost both times.
â?¢ Petr Nedved, Philadelphia Flyers, age 34
â?¢ Priceline: $2.4 million, 942 games, 705 points
A poster boy for career underachievement, which is one reason he's played for seven different teams. Nedved has participated in only six NHL playoff games since 1997.
â?¢ Keith Tkachuk, St. Louis Blues, age 34
â?¢ Priceline: $3.8 million, 897 games, 868 points
The winger won the World Cup with Team USA in 1996, but as an NHLer in pursuit of the Cup hasn't come within shouting distance as of yet. Throughout the '90s, he was part of the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise that has failed to win a playoff round since 1987.
â?¢ Owen Nolan, Phoenix Coyotes, age 34
â?¢ Priceline: $1.225 million, 915 games, 735 points
Like Amonte, Nolan was traded by an eventual Cup winner, exiting Colorado midway through the 1995-96 season, then watching the Avalanche go on to win the Cup. The only player picked ahead of Nedved in the 1990 draft, Nolan has been part of teams that have missed the playoffs seven times.
â?¢ Eric Lindros, Dallas Stars, age 33
â?¢ Priceline: $1.55 million, 711 games, 839 points
With the Flyers, he was part of the group that was swept in 1997 final by Detroit. He won Olympic gold in 2002 with Team Canada, but has appeared in only 50 NHL playoff games over his 13-year career.
â?¢ Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa Senators, age 33
â?¢ Priceline: $4.7 million, 706 games, 671 points
The Senators captain was victimized last spring on the shorthanded game-winning goal that helped Buffalo upset Ottawa in the playoffs. In his last two postseasons, Alfredsson has managed a total of three goals.
â?¢ Alexei Yashin, New York Islanders, age 32
â?¢ Priceline: $7.6 million, 792 games, 731 points
The Russian center has never played beyond the second round and has participated in only 43 playoff games in seven visits to the spring tournament. In three of those postseasons, he failed to score a playoff goal.
â?¢ Michael Peca, Toronto Maple Leafs, age 32
â?¢ Priceline: $2.5 million, 693 games, 394 points
The two-way pivot has twice been to the Stanley Cup finals (Buffalo in 1999, Edmonton in 2006) and has twice been a bridesmaid. After a career spent with teams handcuffed by economic restraints, he now joins the Leafs at a time when the salary cap has made the big spenders just faces in the crowd.
â?¢ Paul Kariya, Nashville Predators, age 31
â?¢ Priceline: $4.5 million, 739 games, 790 points
He was part of the Anaheim team that lost in Game 7 of the Cup finals to New Jersey in 2003, absorbing a fearsome Scott Stevens hit and then scoring a dramatic goal in the sixth game. Other than that spring, however, he has played in only 20 NHL playoff games.
â?¢ Chris Pronger, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, age 31
â?¢ Priceline: $6.25 million, 802 games, 456 points
The 6-foot-6 rear guard joined Peca and the rest of the Oilers in their surprise trip to the Cup finals last year, losing in the seventh game. He's been in 109 playoff games, and last spring became the first defenseman to score on a penalty shot in the finals.
â?¢ Todd Bertuzzi, Florida Panthers, age 31
â?¢ Priceline: $5.3 million, 710 games, 529 points
Like Yashin, Bertuzzi has never played beyond the second round. A rookie in 1995, he didn't play his first playoff game until 2001 and has only six career postseason goals.
â?¢ Saku Koivu, Montreal Canadiens, age 31
â?¢ Priceline: $4.75 million, 569 games, 460 points
He won a world title as captain of Team Finland, but has been past the first round of the playoffs just twice in his 10-year career. He suffered a season-ending eye injury in the spring against Carolina, and without him, the Habs blew a 2-0 series lead.
â?¢ Ryan Smyth, Edmonton Oilers, age 30
â?¢ Priceline: $3.5 million, 717 games, 496 points
Nicknamed Captain Canada for the countless times he has played internationally for his country, Smyth has won Olympic gold, a World Cup title and a world championship title. He got to the Cup finals for the first time with Edmonton in the spring and saw his dream ended in the seventh and deciding game.

No Sleeman in the area. That is - by far - my favorite beer back home. Especially now that they've bought out my other favorite brewer (Upper Canada). *sigh* It's a shame that you can't even get it as an import. I wonder if it's available in NJ, DE, or PA...

I think the following have a better than average chance:
â?¢ Teppo Numminen, Buffalo Sabres
â?¢ Tony Amonte, Calgary Flames
â?¢ Jeremy Roenick, Phoenix Coyotes
â?¢ Chris Pronger, Anaheim Mighty Ducks
The following have an outside chance:
â?¢ Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa Senators
â?¢ Paul Kariya, Nashville Predators
The rest don't have a snowball's chance:
â?¢ Mats Sundin, Toronto Maple Leafs
â?¢ Petr Nedved, Philadelphia Flyers
â?¢ Keith Tkachuk, St. Louis Blues
â?¢ Owen Nolan, Phoenix Coyotes
â?¢ Eric Lindros, Dallas Stars
â?¢ Alexei Yashin, New York Islanders
â?¢ Michael Peca, Toronto Maple Leafs
â?¢ Todd Bertuzzi, Florida Panthers
â?¢ Saku Koivu, Montreal Canadiens
â?¢ Ryan Smyth, Edmonton Oilers
-
why do you think Montreal doesnt have a snowballs chance?
they are probably the best goaltending team out there with Aebischer and Huet.
their D is solid with Dandenault, Souray, Markov and the addition of Niinimaa.
and then put, Koivu/Samsonov/Kovalev on your top line, with Ryder, Bonk and rookie Latendresse as the wild card...you have a pretty fucking awesome team.
they definitely win the division and i think, the whole shootin' match.

Ah, Sonick...I wish I had your optimism. Montreal has always been my team. I bleed the bleu, blanc et rouge.
However, how many times have we watched a goalie have a career season and follow it up with a huge stinker? Giguerre in Anaheim, Khabibulin after going to Chicago, Nabokov in SJ, Theodore in Montreal, etc. Huet has had HALF a good season. That's not enough of a track record for me. And Aebischer isn't a full time playoff goalie.
When your best defencemen is Sheldon Souray...ouch. He's got a rocket for a point shot but I watched him get turned inside out way too many times last year (Jason Spezza totally made Souray his bitch).
Koivu is STILL having problems with his peripheral vision. And being able to see the whole ice is something that's been a strong point for him.
And, Gainey still has to get the Habs some size up the middle. They don't have that power forward/centre that they really need. I think the Habs might have one of the smallest offences in the league - and that hurts them during the playoffs.
Their first five games will say an awful lot about this team. They start on the road against Buffalo, Toronto, and Philly - then host Ottawa and Calgary at home. Brutal.
My hope is that they finish second in the division, sixth in the conference and then make it deep in the second round. That would be improvement. A key aquisition before the trade deadline would REALLY help.
-
man that Calgary / Montreal game last night was the best game of the season.....i didnt even turn away for the baseball game!
-
Agreed!! Calgary and Montreal are some of the fastest teams in the NHL (though Buffalo has them all beat). There were solid hits, great playmaking, some outstanding saves - that game had it all!! And the telecast was in French!! Nice to hear Jacques Demers again, even if I can't understand that thick accent of his.
I'm already revisiting all my predictions. Buffalo coming out of the east, hands down. Still going with Anaheim and Calgary fighting it out for the west. Did you see that bitch slapping Buffalo gave Philly last night? Sweet....
-
yeah, buffalo looks the best now out of the east.
and dont forget Minnesota out of the west.
whats up with the Flyers all of a sudden? sheesh
no matter what though, i just hope the cup goes back to a city that actually gets snow. :)

On DirecTV. The only feed was apparently the RDS one (French TSN).
I can't believe the Habs lost to Chicago...after such a strong start!!

same with Dish Network.
dish Network usually has two feeds for each game, so you can pick which announcers you want to hear...
Chicago, of course, blacks out everything!

NHL, Google to show games on tape-delay
Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal -
2:19 PM PST Wednesday
by Eric Fisher
The National Hockey League has annunced a new multi-year video content deal with Google Inc., making full-length games from the '06-07 season and some classic games available for online purchase on a 48-hour, tape-delay basis.
Pricing is still being finalized, but games are likely to cost $2.99 each after a free trial for the first two weeks of November. The deal arrives after a beta test on Google Video, as well as an offering last spring in which condensed NHL playoff games were sold on Cupertino-based Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes store.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is a revenue-sharing pact common to video download agreements. Mountain View-based Google will create an NHL-themed portion of the store where the official league content will be joined by hockey-oriented, user-generated videos.
"This is obviously an on-demand world where people want what they want, when they want it, and where they want it," said NHL Interactive CyberEnterprises President Keith Ritter. "Google is a place where we definitely need to be."
Discussions about a future video content deal with Apple are still ongoing, Ritter said, as are efforts to offer live streaming of games online. No timetable exists for either initiative.

Ditto for the Ducks. I knew they'd be good, but 15-2-5?!?!!
I watched them just whipe the ice with the Sharks last night, and I can tell you this - those aren't the Mighty Ducks.

yeah, its really unlike him. i am at every home game and i have never really seen him do anything that looked like that. Briere musta said something to him and Ovie went Zidane on him!
the Caps get your Ducks tomorrow night, should be a good game (finally some good games at the phone booth!)

Good rule, but I didn't see anything malicious. Plus the guy came out for his next shift.

speaking of the caps, looks like my company has some left-over half-price uppers for next monday's game (12/11) against the penguins - $17 instead of $35. if anyone wants to tag along, drop me a PM. maybe ovie will lay out a member of the pens' D...
sonick, we should meet up for a beer at the game (during or after).

Pens' future in Pittsburgh in doubt after slots vote
Casino aligned with Pens not awarded license
ESPN.com news services
The Penguins' future in Pittsburgh might be in doubt after a casino the team had aligned with, in the hopes of getting a new arena built, wasn't awarded a slots license by the city.
PITG Gaming was awarded Pittsburgh's first license to operate a slot-machine casino, beating out two other bidders, including Isle of Capri casino, which had promised to build the Penguins a new arena if it was awarded the license.
Isle of Capri had said it would build a $290 million facility for the Penguins to replace 45-year-old Mellon Arena -- at no cost to taxpayers or the team -- if it obtained a slot-machine license from the state.
Penguins owner Mario Lemieux said this week that the Penguins would have to "consider all of our options" if Isle of Capri wasn't awarded the license.
On Wednesday, after the Pittsburgh Gaming Board's rejection of Isle of Capri's bid, the team released a statement calling its future uncertain.
"Had Isle of Capri been selected, it would have ensured the long-term future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh and would have delivered a $1 billion development opportunity to the Lower Hill and Uptown," the team said. "At this point, our franchise enters a period of uncertainty, with our lease at Mellon Arena set to expire this summer. We will re-evaluate all of our options before deciding on a course of action and making further comment."
Earlier this week, Lemieux called a deal to sell the team to a Canadian billionaire "unequivocally" dead.
Jim Balsillie last week withdrew his offer to buy the Penguins for $175 million but has said he might still try to purchase the team. Lemieux said that won't happen and the club will try to make Balsillie forfeit his deposit.
"We can say unequivocally that the deal with Mr. Balsillie is dead," Lemieux said. "We were shocked and offended that Mr. Balsillie would back out of such an important deal at the last minute -- and less than a week before a decision on the funding of a new arena that will have far-reaching implications on our franchise, our city and our region."
Detroit-based casino developer Don H. Barden's PITG Gaming has proposed building a casino and entertainment development on the city's North Shore, near Heinz Field and PNC Park.
Barden had promised to contribute some money for a new arena over 30 years under a plan proposed by city and county officials that would include public funds. But that plan also calls for the Penguins to help pay for the facility.
"I am committed to what we said we were going to do," Barden said Wednesday. "We're going to fund $7.5 million a year for 30 years towards financing a new multipurpose arena."
He said he will meeting soon with Allegheny County executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl to get the process moving.
"It will be the largest of our operations and we're going to put a lot of attention on this project," Barden said. "We're going to get it going right away."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

one of the bidders was going to build a new arena
another supposedly had the fix in via rendell
so they went with the third
weird
-
The board voted unanimously to award the city's only slot-machine license to Detroit-based casino developer Don H. Barden's PITG Gaming. Barden's group proposes building a casino and entertainment development on the city's North Shore, near Heinz Field and PNC Park. Both the Steelers and Pirates were strongly opposed to his plan. Sonick (and any other Canucks) - in case you're interested - the Canadian Embassy is having a get together before the Habs game on the 27th at the Elephant and Castle (12th and Penn, I believe). We'll be there.
Habs are on a roll!!

that actually sounds fun
maybe i'll make the habs my new favorite team after the pens move

Does anybody know when the price of Center Ice usually drops during a season? I was going to buy it at the beginning of the year but then the Blues started playing horribly again and I became discouraged, but after being in St. Louis and seeing a few games, and now that Andy Murray has them playing well again I am considering the purchase. I know there is a free preview starting January 8, anybody know if that will coincide with a price drop?
(luckily the Blues are actually on VS tonight, and then with the free Center Ice preview i get more games then I have had all year)
-
probably depends on your cable service
Dish network currently has a half season package for $109 (i think thats only a $40 savings though).

Right after the All-Star Break, then again after right before the playoffs, but playoffs are included.

Thanks for the info. I actually just called Comcast, Half Season package starts January 8, it is $119 vs the full season price of $169. Would have expected a bigger drop than that. I really want to see the Blues-Preds game on the 6th, but its certainly not worth an extra $50.
Would love to see some retribution on Tootoo for these hits

Sweet! Good find. A few years ago I waited until the last month and it was around $50 and playoffs were included. Don't think I can wait that long after watching the Ducks last week while back in The OC.

The Pittsburgh Penguins could play rent-free and be equal managing partners in the new Sprint Center if they move to Kansas City (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2720130)
my wife does not need to hear about this if the pens move to k.c.
-
Kansas City Penquins....has quite a ring to it.
I wonder if they'd have to wait for a Stanley Cup win before the Kansas city public came out in thier thousands wearing pens jerseys like the Pittsburgh lot!!

That is definitely in the blind squirrel finds a nut category for punches
speaking of hockey, now that I have been able to watch every game, I am pretty excited about the future of hockey in st. louis again, attendance has been picking up, and even though the recent 3 game loss streak probably ended any outside shot at the playoffs, at least they are doing some winning
if everything goes right and they unload their veterans at the deadline (Tkachuk, Guerin, Rucinsky) and resign Brewer, I think they will be a lot of fun to watch next year, top 5 defense of Brewer, McKee, Eric Johnson, Jackman, and Wideman brings a lot to the table, the key is to get some young forwards via the draft or in return for their veterans and sign a couple of free agents
they also have a stud goal prospect in Marek Schwarz at Peoria, so things are looking good
-
tonight, Boston University won the Beanpot Tournament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beanpot). great college hockey game, based on the third period BC should have won but BU somehow pulled it out in OT. BU's goalie, John Curry, was simply stellar.

fuck yes, that's great
-
though i am a Boston fan first, i do like to see the Canadian teams do well....something that did NOT happen this week.
we only got 3 in so i'll be pulling for Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver.
but i'll just hope that Vancouver and Buffalo dont end up in the finals like it looks to be the case. cause that would be real boring like.
-

I'm assuming your commenting on every Penguins game being on National Television...(while ignoring the fact that not a single Ducks game is being broadcast)
I'm doing a survey, BTW. Does you cable provider offer Versus in HD?
-
ducks dont have the transplants or star power that the pens have. but yeah, guess that's a total bummer for you
i do not believe we have versus in hd (i dont have an hd set, yet)
-
I have versus in HD, its split with the golf channel in hd
and how is Buffalo boring? their fans may suck but the hockey isnt boring, Vancouver certainly is though
Go Blues! (ahem)

i dont get Versus in HD
in fact, i dont get Versus at all. Its in a higher tier package than the one i subscribe to.
but i dont believe Dish Network would give it to me in HD even if i got the higher package.

i went to grad school at BU, loved it (although being right across the river from harvard and mit does give one an inferiority complex at time). if she's into hockey, she picked a great school! the new arena rawkz. feel free to PM me if you happen to have additional questions about BU.

Thanks for the feedback. Pollard, is that cable that you speak of?
D*TV does not broadcast Versus in HD at all times, but any game Versus broadcasts in HD is available in HD on an alternate channel. My brother-in-law is trying to convince his cable company to offer the games at least in HD, but he was told that Versus HD is satellite only and I don't think that's true.

it is on comcast cable, i have watched games in hd on there before so I am sure of it

What a first night. Sens spanked the Pens (don't let the score fool you), though the Pens PK was pretty good.
But, good lord....QUADRUPLE F**KING OVERTIME? I thought the double OT in the SJ/Nashville game was bad. Luongo makes 72 saves!! Welcome to the playoffs, Roberto.
Tonite will be interesting. My wife has "requested" that I sleep in the garage for the remainder of Round 1 as she cheers on her Wings with my "go flames go!" chant ringing in her ears.

bah, same as every year - they'll flame out in the second round (this from someone who grew up in the national capital region). then again, the colts were famous for chocking during the playoffs and they went all the way this year...

The over/under on penalty minutes tonight if Nashville either gets a big lead or does something stupid: 140.

im really mad.. unless i sign up for the nhl package (and yes i know its discounted, but im not home enough), i wont be seeing most of the games. i guess nyc apparently only feels a need to show new york games. major major bummer! but the sabres/isles game wasnt so bad i suppose.
i went to a bar that was supposed to be showing nhl games, and was close to throwing a beer at the bartender. apparently instead of showing the hockey games, they had to show the f'ing mets game. i mean, c'mon, its F'ING PLAYOFF HOCKEY! i ended up leaving the bar and thusly they lost my money :) too bad for them.

i was unaware of this - the grandaddy of canadian hockey is invading the US airways?!?

3. "Don Cherry" is Canadian for "Don Imus"
Combative CBC hockey broadcaster Don Cherry will be joining NBC's in-studio crew throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs. Expect him to offend some people. And know going in that Cherry is not a big fan of Europeans, French-Canadians or visors. In fact, the only people he detests more than non-English-speaking visor-wearers are those who would dare suggest that this outfit is not stylish:

peace out penguins!

My favorite Cherry quote, and I'm para-phrasing somewhat because I don't remember it word for word, I was too busy peeing myself.
As he sees Lemieux and Jagr chatting on the ice....
"And look at Mario Lemieux over there next to his sister"
Oh, classic, just eff'n classic!!!!! :D :D
Another, about a player I don't recall.
"I don't know why he's got his hands over his groin, there's nothing down there"
Sonick.....the pens were so nineties man! Why not go for the Redwings like every other sheep?

Good predictions. Can't argue too much with them. The only one I can see going the other way is the Sharks/Wings series. Battle of the goalies there.
You'll get alot of people telling you to watch the games at Gretzky's but to be honest, it's a lousy atmosphere to watch the games in. Where you should go really depends on where you are in the Toronto area, since it's such a huge place. If you're downtown, I'd suggest Philthy McNasty's - a stupid, horrible name but it used to be the Peel Pub and it's a great sports bar. PM me with your exact location and I'll give you more specific suggestions.
Ottawa is 4.5 hrs at a minimum (e.g. no traffic on the 401 out of Toronto). A healthy drive but watching playoff games in Canada is something every hockey fan should do at least once.
-
while i didnt watch any of the sens series, im thinking the devils could pull it off and knock out the sens. they usually manage to choke no matter how great a season they have.
and id love to see the wings win - only to see the sharks lose. oh my sharks friends will kill me for that one.
i watched a lot of the sabres/isles games, and well the sabres killed them to put it nicely :) the rangers were looking good, but there is no way they are getting past this series.
now if only i can convince some partners here to give up their rangers tix for one game :D
-
I would tend to agree with those predictions, but I would love to see the Rangers knock off the sabres.
-
i agree on the rangers win. itd be pretty cool to see them knock off the sabres. its hard to imagine ive become a semi-rangers fan, but with no LA kings to cheer on and living in NYC, its easy to do :)

Not sure what qualifies as downtown, but I'm staying near St. James Park, less then a mile from the Inner Harbor. I prefer a pub with locals to a touristy place like an ESPN zone or something (keeping in mind that I will be rooting for Anaheim over the Canucks, so try not to get me killed).
Bummer on Ottawa - I thought it was closer. Maybe I should shoot for Buffalo.

Philthy McNastys isnt downtown....
the Loose Moose is a cool place to go, but may be a little of a young crowd...but its definitely not boring! esp once the game ends and it gets late and its right on Front St. Its the place
but i moved from T.O. when i was 17 and when i come back to visit, we usually dont hit the sports bars.
its a bit of a walk from St. James, maybe 7 or 8 blocks. but you may want to get that far away from Church St, so you dont end up getting hit on all night!!

Cool thanks. I'll have time to check it all out...
Any other siggestions of things to do are welcome. I will be spending at least one day at the HoF.

I have that from when the Kings were playing the Habs in 93. It might be nice to get an updated picture though, because back in 93 I refused to touch the cup, but now that I'm an old man I think it might be alright.

Can I get a Bro Hymm chorus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owoAZTPIoNQ&mode=related&search=) from the congregation?

I would love to be able to join in this discussion but there's just no hockey on tv down here. Even the sports part of the evening news don't even give it a mention. I stopped in for a quick beer in a bar in West Palm Beach last friday and they had the playoffs on for about 15 minutes until the twat of a bartender switched it over to some snoozefest baseball crap.....at which the stands were deserted I might add.
Needless to say I downed my beer, told the twat behind the bar what I thought of him and went home, leaving no tip for said twat!

Huh? Philthy McNasty's is next to the Royal Alex on 276 King St. That's pretty much right downtown. And it's a sports hangout. Granted, I haven't been there since last fall but I think it's still around.
The Loose Moose moved from Adelaide, did it? It was always crowded with a young-ish crowd. I was in there before the changover and that was a great place to watch hockey.
Go Sens!!

maybe theres more than one! :)
i dont hang at sports bars in toronto, though, but buddy has a 52" flat panel TV in his basement, with bubble dome hockey table and a kegerator! thats all you need isnt it?
-
One step closer. Vancouver really wasted their opportunity on Tuesday night....
Bummer I won't get to see the Ducks while I'm in Toronto (I would have enjoyed that) but I'll take the r&r while Detroit and San Jose beat each other up.
-
We're just about to head up to Detroit to see the Sharks/Wings game on Sat night. Always good to see a game at the Joe but can you believe tix are still available??
I felt really bad for Luongo - he put on a stellar performance and his team let him down. Well, what was left of the team. A few people were playing injured and others, like Matt Cooke, Jeff Cowan, and Ryan Kessler were out completely. The Sedins put in a poor performance. To me, the Canucks look like the Sens did two years ago (but with better goaltending). With the proper management, they'll be a force in a couple of seasons.
-
im hoping that the rangers can pull off a win tonight. its looking doubtful as i fully expect the sabres to get their ass kicked into gear, but itd be a great upset. now if only i could find a way to score some tickets.

I dont think the Canucks have nearly the offensive talent the sens had even a couple of years ago, they need to add some free agents, but if they get some offense they could be real good
-
Heading to the Loose Moose for the Sharks/Red Wings game to check it out, and if I don't like it, I'll head to Philthy McNastys. I ran past the LM this morning and it looked alright, save for the map of Texas on their sign!?!?!?
Much like the Sharks wasted an opportunity on Wednesday, the Rangers also wasted a golden opp last night. There's a lot of Buffalo fans up here (at least there were in ther bar last night). I was surprised with the fervor of support for the Raptors too. They may not have been the most basketball savvy, but they were supportive throughout.
I ended up watching the Manchester Derby in my hotel room this morning (good luck finding a soccer bar here). The Official Bar of Man United Supporters closed down last fall apparently.
-
To answer your questions - the Loose Moose moved to Front Street, and Philthy McNasty's moved to King Street. I didn't enjoy either very much during the afternoon hockey but I did win $200 at a poker tourney at Philthy's and the night time crowd at the Loose Moose for the Sens game was very fun. And the wait staff at LM was smokin' hot, second only to Jack Astors, who weren't as trashy. All in all, Toronto has been a good time.
Back to hockey...
The Sharks blew the series when they let a 2 goal lead in game 3 slip away. Ron Wilson is taking a lot of heat up here for how he misused Thorton all series long and the rumor is he lost control of the team before Nabakov screwed the pooch and was attacked in the locker room.
Ducks in 6
Sabres in 7 (though I'm rooting for the Sens)
-
rumor is he lost control of the team before Nabakov screwed the pooch and was attacked in the locker room....
who, or what is 'the pooch'?
And where is Erika Lindross selling her wares these days?
-
Originally posted by Roadbike Mankie:

In this scenario, I'm using the words screw the pooch to describe the horrible gaff he made in Saturday's game where he came out fo the net and failed to clear the puck ending up in a simple open net goal for the Red Wings.
But usually, the pooch is a dog, and to screw the pooch is a cleaned up version of an old military phrase to "fuck the dog," which used to mean to goof around. Now it means to make a huge mistake.

She is currently ruining any chance for the Dallas Stars to win a Stanley Cup.

And so it turns out - Sens vs Sabres. Wings vs Ducks.
I'll take Sens in 6 and Wings in 7.
We went to the Wings game on Sat - seriously good times. It's so great to watch hockey in an arena where people understand the sport and care about it. At least four octopi hit the ice (the last one mere seconds before the end of the game resulted in a delay of game penalty for the Wings but who cared at that point?). And $5 bottles of Molson. Good times...
-
wow - no one seems to think the sabres will sweep the series. granted at times they looked awful against the rangers but im thinking the sabres will pull it off in 6.
ducks in 7.

all i hope is that the eastern conference wins now.

The only problem with the coverage is that we probably won't get anymore "bonus" coverage, which means not getting the great analysis from CBC or TSN. I've been really disgusted with colour commentary on Versus and the studio talk with Clement et al isn't much better. These guys aren't dumb - they know their hockey. I think they avoid the detailed analysis for fear of losing casual fans. There's also a definite sense of promoting the US teams when the play the Canadian ones. Again, understandable given the demographics, but unfortunate. They pretty much unanimously picked the Pens to beat the Sens and did the same with NJ. I'll be they pick the Sabres tonite, too.
The only bright spot will be Pierre Maguire's brilliant analysis on NBC. That guy really knows his stuff.

Since nobody is watching the West Coast games except maybe Pollard, you all missed an exciting game last night. Ewing theory in effect with Ducks taking it to the Red Wings last night sans Pronger. It's a new series now when I thought we were toast.
Of course, we don't have a chance if we can't figure out how to keep the Red Wings from making themselves comfortable in front of our net.

Is it too late to trade for Chris Simon??? ;)

I was actually surprised anaheim won, I had to take off after detroit tied it, as soon as they did I figure Anaheim was done. I would prefer an Anaheim/Ottawa finals at this point.

Agreed. When Jackman scored to start it off I thought I was on to something good. But after the phantom penalty and the ensuing cross-check on face off call (!!!) to start the third I was pretty sure Detriot would take the lead and win. But alas, these Ducks aren't mighty. They're just good.
I do think that not enough is being made about the loss of Chris Kunitz though, especially on the power play. Anaheim's offense has been much weaker without him.

what's with the early start times for both games this weekend? and no games tonight, a friday?!? my take: the NHL has rolled over and given up. they know they won't get any viewership on weekend evenings (and networks wouldn't give them the time anyways) so they'll take what little they can get... competing with saturday afternoon cartoons. on the upside, i means i can go from watching the FA Cup final into Sens-Sabres. wow will i be drunk by 4 pm.

Saturday's start time did surprise me. At first I think they didn't want to compete with the NBA playoffs, but now they could have had the entire evening to themselves on the national TV schedule. Instead they go up against the Fox MLB game of the week during rivalry week.
Sunday makes sense as there is no national baseball game on at 3:00 on Sunday. And there may not be a basketball game either.

GO SENS GO!!! if i can nab a ticket to one of the first three games in ottawa, i'll be flying home. not likely tho, since season ticket buyers are getting first crack at playoff tickets. apparently no more than 1000 tickets, and possibly less, will be available for public onsale.
once upon a time i would have preferred the sens taking their chances against detroit. but the ducks are looking a lot less flashy (especially their offense) and i like our chances against them a little better now. plus, if the ducks make it, it'll mean that their current series will have gone to seven games. i hope the series goes to game seven no matter who wins!

Actually, no. The Ducks lead 3-2 and can close it out in game 6. If Detroit wins, it will mean it goes 7 games.
As for the flashiness, or lack there of, the Duck have now played two really flat games in a row, but thanks to JS and a couple of lucky breaks, they won them both. The loss of Chris Kunitz is the main reason for the lack of flash on offense, something we've been lacking the second half of the season and is just magnified now with Kunitz out. Should the Ducks get through, I might not sleep thinking about the line of Alfredsson, Heatley and Spezza.

i hope no one was shut out of over-time play on saturday because of NBC's lame coverage. they cut away from over-time of a crucial game... for the preakness pre-race show. what an embarrassment. interviews with the groundskeepers, and shots of where street sense grazes during the off-season, rate higher than sudden-death that might send a team to their first stanley cup finals in their modern history?!? lame.
indeed: wow, was i drunk by 4 pm. after catching the FA cup at a friend's, i stumbled over to lucky bar in hopes of convincing them to put the game on (i soooo didn't want to trek out to old town). turns out i had the place to myself. literally. so they put nbc on the giant hi-def and i spent the first half of the game alone, yelling at the tv :) somewhere in the second period a half-dozen roller-hockey players came in, rollerblades, sticks and all. good comraderie, pitchers everywhere, and they helped raise a proper stink when NBC's coverage switched to "stall cleaner's report (live from pimlico)".

It's fine to root for Canada, but at least be realistic about it. He's a proven playoff net minder - Conn Smyth winner for christ's sake - he won't choke, especially not in a contract year (can you say "hello LA Kings" for a ton of money?).
Now a true hockey fan would have said "with the ducks lack of discipline/composure in the playoffs and the power play prowess in the playoffs of the Sens, this is the year the cup comes back to Canada!"
If the Ducks don't win the Stanley Cup this year, it won't be Giguere's fault.

calling me not a true hockey fan??? pshh. perhaps you mean "a more well-written hockey fan would've said"
but what i really meant by my little comment was that a) the senators should win the cup (if they play Anaheim and giguere is the reason they will lose
if giguere plays like he is now, they'll raise the cup, however, i dont think he will...and it sure as hell wont be Selanne/Neidermeyer/Prongers fault if they lose.
i seem to remember a hot springtime Giguere riding his momentum....oh so close once before.
i dont need to delve into a million stats that i know you are already aware of to say that, my prediction is that when the finals are over, Ducks fans will look at Giguere (over any other ducks player anyway) as to the reason they didnt win.
though, they'll probably have their eyes on Heatley/Spezza/Alfredsson even more.
-
Just busting your chops, although I do expect a little more from Canadians when it comes to hockey analysis.
I'm very careful not to get ahead of myself, so we can break down a Ducks/Sens final after the Ducks eliminate the Wings, should that happen.
But it would be sad if Ducks fans blame Giggy for any playoff mishaps (and likely a testament to the lack of hockey knowledge for most Ducks fans) given his performance in the first three series.
As for his 2003 performance, nobody blamed Giggy for the Ducks not winning, except perhaps Giggy himself, which is ridiculous. The Mighty Ducks road his back all the way to Game 7, and yes, it was oh so close.
-

ok. i understand. though, this year, you can claim knowledge over me, since my team (boston) isnt in the playoffs and since i dont have Versus i havent even been watching the games.
furthermore, i admit to being an Eastern Conference fan far above Western Conference and will defer all western conference knowledge and analysis to my friends who are ducks/nucks/flames/wings fans. :)
-
Giguere proved that a hot goalie can steal a game, as he did in game 5. The Wings clearly outplayed them in every possible way and yet Giggy game them the chance to win.
However, he hasn't been stellar all the time. At times, he's been downright mediocre (see game 3, which was a 5-0 loss).
Some may say that Emery has been less than stellar, especially with the bad rebounds and occasional shaky play. But the team in front of him is SO strong that they've been able to beat the best goalies in the game, including Brodeur and Miller.
I just can't see either the Wings or the Ducks having the strength to contain the Sens. They can score with any given line. Sure, the Ducks will throw Pronger and Niedermayer at the Sens #1 line, but the Sens have players that can score on all lines.
The Sens have overpowered every team they've faced and I have every confidence that they'll win the Cup. GO SENS!!!!!

That loss had very little to do with Giggy and a whole lot to do with the D not clearing Holmstrom from the crease (or anybody for that matter). Carlysle actually did Giggy a favor and took him out after 3 to rest him for games 4 and 5 (a genius move at this point). Bryzgalov actually gave up the last 2 goals in the same fashion - a save and a Red Wing pouncing on a loose puck in the crease. It was ridiculous.
Giggy's GAA avg and save % are still better than Emery's. But as I've said before, I am worried about the Sens offense, should the Ducks be fortunate enough to make the finals.

the only real "hockey bar" is bugsy's (http://www.bugsyspizza.com/sportsbarindex.htm) in old town alexandria. i'll definitely be hitting them up for a game or two of the series. as far as i know i don't have any plans for that saturday, so let's head on over! i had luck last week at lucky bar (dupont circle) but that was because i was the only one there on a saturday afternoon. if it's an evening game, forget that option.

ok, the jury is in: the schedule SUCKS.
had they stuck to the traditional schedule (game 1 this saturday), it would have been the sens' friend - just enough rest for them and not enough for the opponent. now it's their enemy: the sens will not have played a game for NINE DAYS by the time the puck drops on monday. now the ducks will have just enough rest, while the senators will have too much rust. grumble grumble...
should be a great series!

yeah yeah, busted. have you been keeping track of the sens' post-season record for the last 5-6 years? can you blame me for being sceptical that early on? year after year, they finished first or second in their division... and not a finals apperance to show for it.

Unless you consider the fact that Anaheim has more Canadians on their roster than Ottawa does. If you count the number of active Canadian players, it's roughly 16-12 for the Ducks.
So this whole thing about "Canada's team" really kind of irks me. Who should we - as a nation - cheer for? The team with the most Canadians? Or the team geographically based in Canada? It seems like a silly argument to me. The league is still approximately 55% Canadian and that's not bad for a country of 31 million.
I'll cheer for Ottawa for two reasons. One - I lived there for 10 years and my family still lives there. I love to go back home and feed off the energy of the Sens fans. Two - I love the makeup of this team, their grit and determination. Whether it's Alfie and his dogged persistence even after being slammed in the media year after year...or Volchenkov blocking shots left, right and centre...hoping the Heatly wins one for Dan Snyder... Go Sens Go!!!!
-
it's not where the team is located, it's where the Cup will spend the rest of the year :D

a divided canada? how about a divided defense that gave up two turnover goals? :)
great game. other than the last two or three minutes of the third period, i felt emery was the better goalie... but giguere came through when it mattered. great flurry to end the game, ottawa came very close. ducks' defense was damn solid, kept the sens' first line in check rather effectively. anaheim took some stupid penalties. the last few minutes of the first period were torture, almost caused me to have indigestion - sens were lucky to hit the locker room with a tie, looked like it was going to be worse.
i watched the game at bugsy's - HIGHLY recommended. good crowd, solid pizza, and molson on tap. can't wait for game 2!
-
Sorry I'm late to this conversation - I slept like a baby last night and decided to even sleep in a little.
5 on 5 hockey was men among boys. When Ottawa tried to come out in the first period and play physical, it was exactly what I wanted to see. You can't play a more physical game than these Ducks. There was one stretch in the third where Pronger, Neidermier, Pahlsson and Moen simply stood at the Ottawa blue line and kept throwing the puck and the Sens back in their own zone like a one sided game of red-rover. It was silly. I'm pretty sure Cami Granato was on the ice in a Sens jersey last night, it was so ridiculous.
I'm a little concerned about the Ducks lack of discipline coupled with some dubious calls (like the phantom call on Pronger with less than a minute left), but as this series rolls on, the Ducks physical style is most certainly going to wear on the Sens. I'm cautious because it was only one game, but I'm feeling really good right now.
-
That was cute. All those little Senators gave it everything they had last night and still lost 1-0. Why they've insisted on playing a physical game with the Ducks I will never know. It should be clear by now that they can't do that for a full three periods.
Spread it around, use your speed and superior stick handling skills and try to beat the Ducks based on their over agressiveness. You can't take it to them, especially if you play in the sissy Eastern Conference.
-
hi,
if anyone has seen my senators, could you please let them know that we miss them and they really should call if they're going to take off like that? they appeared to have gotten lost on the way to anaheim - they didn't show up last night.
thanks,
a concerned fan
-
Yep. I saw Murray change the lines up in the first period and thought it wreaked of desperation.
With Spezza and Heatley paired with Chris Neil and Alfredsson with the Fischer line, I realized that again the Sens were trying to go pound for pound with the Ducks. All that did was create more turnovers because the Sens were lured into a false sense of space, supposedly created by Neil or Fischer. They tried to skate through the bigger Ducks which is a mistake. Find the next pass, wait for the hit, make the pass to open space and move the puck around quickly. They haven't done that, instead opting to try to bounce off the Ducks, which 9 times out of 10 left them flat on their backs.
Keep hope though - I do remember the Ducks being down 0-2 in a finals and forcing a game 7 in New Jersey in '03, but the Ducks certainly weren't as badly out-hit, out-hustled, and outplayed as the Sens have been. It will be intersting to see what happens when Carlysle has to think first in Ottawa.
-
the last 2 minutes of last night's game, with the sens running on desperation, looked good. but a team can't keep that up for the other 58 minutes (if only because emery was pulled for part of that time).
the game wasn't particularly interesting to watch... game 1 had me on the edge of my seat, good plays going both directions. i expect more interesting hockey than tha, ottawa just didn't play like a team that belonged in the finals (save for emery, who i still feel is a better goalie than giggy).
i'm hoping that the home-ice advantage will ensure that game 3 is closer to #1 than #2.

i never said giguere isn't a great goalie - he most certainly is. check out my post-game comments for both games of the finals, in both i stated that he played great. i just happen to think that emery has put in the superior performance to date in this series - this is, in part, a function of the number and quality of shots he's faced (and giguere hasn't). i guess that was my fault for not inlcuding "... in this series so far" in my assessment.

....so I finally get to see a game on NBC last night. What in God's name has happened to the game over the last couple of years that I've been gone??? "Embelishment aka diving." There was more of that shit last night than there is in San Siro. Were's all the Dale Hunters and Rod Langways gone? Replaced by Ms Jagr and the like I suppose.
I really would like the Sens to win it but it's not looking good at this point.

Between that and Alfredsson's late second period shot, I'd be embarrassed to be a Sens fan today. That's no way to win a hockey game, and it was clear from the start of the series that the referees were going to call a penalty any time an Anaheim player so much as sneezed on a Sen (the exception being anytime Pronger cheap shots somebody, apparently), but to so blatantly take advantage of the situation the way the Sens did from the drop of the puck showed a real lack of integrity on their part. They don't deserve to win a hockey game playing that way.

i don't remember diving being much of an issue before last night - that fall Emery took last night was totally over the top.
i thought last night's game was really good hockey, almost on par with game 1. definitely more appealing than the one-sided show that was game 2, or the ugliness that was game 3.
vansmack, can't say i partake of the embarrassment you prescribe to sens fans. personally i think it is the ducks fans that should hide after the bullying that went down in game three (yes, neal had a disgraceful hit too).

hum, sounds like some baseless whining to me - but it would, 'cause i'm a sens fan, and of course you see injustice everywhere because of your allegiance. how exactly are the sens "taking advantage of the situation"?

That's hockey, or at least it used to be. That's what you get as a Ducks fan - a team that when stays disciplined is the best team in hockey. They take their lumps though, as witnessed by the second suspension of Pronger and a ridiculous number of unnecessary power play opportunities (compounded by the high number of power play goals for Ottawa). But again, that's hockey.
All Ottawa has gotten is a handful of discussions with referees after they come out of the locker room because the refs have reviewed the tapes and seen the "embellishment" - Emery fell over in games three and four, both times out of the crease and both times with a Duck trying to avoid him but going after a loose puck. Ridiculous. That's not hockey.
And how you don't count Neil's falling to the ice 30 seconds into the game yesterday as part of the embarrassement, I'm not sure. That's not hockey.

oh, don't get me wrong, i'm entirely in favor of a good physical game. as the ducks showed in games 1 & 2, a good physical game-plan is a recipe for success. but they got down-right thuggish in game 3, in part (IMO) because of frustration. you're right, if the ducks stay disciplined there isn't a lot that opponents can so against them...

well, i only wish it was going to game 7, because i havent seen one second of the Finals yet and i was hoping to catch 3 games at the end. is it on NBC the rest of the way?
-
finally got to see a game. dont know about all the diving lately, but its ugly.
the highlight by far for me was don cherry on nbc. yeah baby! that was all i needed. and loved hearing ray ferraro agree with everything cherry was saying, about the state of affairs of hockey, and how sometimes a good brawl was needed, the stupid instigator calls, etc.
maybe cherry can be put in charge of hockey. we need some new blood. who cares about making hockey more watchable for 'more' americans. its arent getting viewership up.
speaking of hockey - avery's blonde girlfriend (forgot her name) was on conan last night. and she was talking about the fighting in hockey and doing a demo with conan. priceless.

Games 3-7 are NBC.

Why is it that fighting in hockey is frowned upon, but bench clearing in baseball makes the tv highlights? I know hockey players actually fight and baseball fights are a little homo-erotic, more like a gay orgy really, but the intent is the same. Getting rid of fighting in hockey to attract more fans has actually had the opposite effect imho. The educated hockey fan accepts that it's a part of the game. Nothing gets your team pumped up if they're playing flat like sending out your enforcer to drop the gloves with their enforcer. With the 80's Flyers excepted, it was always a fair fight, nobody picked a fight with someone who wasn't up for it. The uneducated hockey goer went only for the fights. Fighting also stopped a lot of the cheap shots because a player knew if he hit someone blind side he was going to get a plummeling before games end, now he gets a 2 minute time out like a child.

you just answered your own question... it's news-worthy because it's not expected from baseball teams. while "exciting", baseball fights are still frowned upon.

hehe, so you (partially) share don cherry's opinion. did you catch his second intermission commentary on monday? included among the outrageous things he said was that hockey clamped down on fighting in order to make the sport more pallateable to American audiences - and that it wasn't working. i'm not convinced about the "american" part, but otherwise i'm with him.
-
Anybody have photos of Lord Stanley's Cup arriving in Anaheim yet?

Why don't you just concede now if that's how you're going to come out and play the first period?

Yes ladies and gentlemen, that was quite the display by the two best teams in hockey in the second period.

yeah, really. the sens played even worse that the ducks did well, lucky to get out just two in the hole. did you catch the NBC commentary during the first intermission? "ottawa missed this", "sens lacking that"... when what's-his-name tried throwing a bone to the ducks, "shouldn't we be highlighting how well anaheim is playing?", the two others turned to him and said "it's easy to look good against an opponent that powerless". sheesh.
Originally posted by vansmack:

too bad half of that equation couldn't keep it up. sens came back strong in the second, got my hopes back up... until they scored that own-goal. might as well have hung up the skates right there. and if lack of discipline is the potential undoing of anaheim, it was the destruction of ottawa: stupid penalties + lack of passion = ducks win.
niedermayer absolutely deserved the smythe (but like most pundits, i was expecting giggy to get it). as a sens fan, there are ducks that are easy to hate (read: pronger). but scottie is just pure class, you can't help but admire his play.
smakie, is that you in the picture? taken during your recent trip to toronto, i assume? nice.
and congrats.

damn was out last night and missed the game. i figured thatd happen. at least the maccabees were so entertaining that im sure i didnt miss much with the game.
guess the sens forgot to show up. seems a recurring problem with them.
go kings go! im all ready for next year :D

Indeed and thank you. Top of the world for me right now, even if nobody else in America gives a damn. Greatest trophy in sports, in my opinion.

I got all set for a great game last night, but after realizing the Sens bus was obviously stuck in traffic and the cheer leaders had to suit up for the first period I switched channels to make my wife happy....I had no argument about how good a game it was so just conceded and we watched something else.
Congrats to the Ducks....Ducks!!! It's a pretty sad affair when a team named after a Disney character wins the most coveted sports trophy in N. America

a movie. . .named after a disney movie. . .even if disney no longer owns the team and they dropped the "mighty" two years ago.

Venerable is correct. They are no longer Mighty, they are just good. Stanley Cup Champion good!

The first two games have already been played across the pond - and day after tomorrow, the season starts for real! Predictions, anyone? I'll kick it off:
Northeast: Ottawa
Southeast: Atlanta
Atlantic: NY Rangers
Central: Detroit
Pacific: San Jose
Northwest: Calgary
Eastern Conference: Ottawa
Western Conference: San Jose
Finals: San Jose (much to my chagrin)
Side notes:
- Ottawa will only get to the finals again if Emery's wrist heals.
- Anaheim will only contend if both Selanne and Niedermayer take the first half of the season off, and then return.
- Toronto will fail to make the playoffs....again
- Johnathan Toves wins the Calder
- Crosby outduels Ovechkin again
- Caps fail to make the playoffs

Whatever - Goldberg!
BTW, How bad will the Caps suck this year??
-
my predictions always suck but:
East:
NY Rangers, Ottawa, Atlanta win the divisions
Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Boston, Tampa and Montreal round out the top 8
I'm taking Pittsburgh over the Rangers in the Eastern Conference finals
West:
Anaheim, Calgary, Detroit win divisions
Los Angeles, Nashville, St. Louis, Colorado and Dallas take the other spots.
Anaheim over Detroit in the finals
I'll give the Pens the cup this year in 7 games.
i dont like it, but it'll happen.
-

Those two will be tough to replace - especially Niedermayer. I thing the kids getting another year under their belt can make up for Teemu, but Niedermayer's presence was the most important cog in last years Stanley Cup Championship.
I don't concern myself with LA, but I am worried about the Sharks in the Division and Detroit in the conference. I will not be as bold as to predict a Stanley Cup Championship this season, because I don't think Anaheim are as good as last season right now, but by April, who knows - they just might be.
-
pretty excited for the pens this year. have tickets when they come here. i wish i had an extra $200 to blow on center ice, but nah
-
The Cup goes back to Canada this season with Ottawa.
Rags will choke like last year.
Pens and Caps both out in the 1st round (if they don't play each other).
Atlanta is overrated, look for either young Caps or Panthers team to top the SE.
Sens take the NE.
Rags take the Atlantic.
Red Wings for the Central with the real battle being the basement.
Luongo is the key to the NW. If he stays healthy , Canucks.
Pacific still the best division with the Kings making nice moves in the off season. The Sharks will win it with Ducks not having Teemu and Scott Niedermayer.
Finals: San Jose and Ottawa - Ottawa in 4 games
Crosby will continue to rack up the secondary assists and get another Ross Trophy if the groin injury doesn't become a bother.
Ovey won't be far behind in points and will win both the Richard and Pearson Trophies.
Loungo gets his first and not last Vezina Trophy.

im liking the rangers and pens. and caps have some potential (goaltending sucks which will haunt them).
on the other side - i have a soft spot for the kings - but sadly labarbera has never been the same since rehab days. wings look solid, and i detest the sharks - but must admit they'll go far.

actually... I think the Red Wings are still obviously the best, but the Blues and Blackhawks are improved and will keep up with nashville for second, columbus will battle edmonton for the western conference title of "at least we arent bad as the coyotes"

*sniff* That's a beautiful sentiment. Beers are on me if we ever see each other at the club. :) But even I, whose family still lives in Ottawa, can't believe the Sens will go that far without a) a wee little more grit and b) some questions answered in the net. The Sens need someone big - huge - on the D (like a Chara or Pronger). And you'll never win a Cup without a Class A goalie. The Sens will get to the top of the NE with Emery and Gerber, but I don't see either of them taking the Sens to the Cup. Bryan Murray is going to have to make a move at the trade deadline to get the Cup (and, personally, I think they should trade Redden for a rent-a-player and then use the money to resign both Heatley and Spezza).
As a matter of fact, I'll give the Canucks a better chance to win the Cup based on Luongo. The Canucks need to score more than 1 goal a game in the playoffs for that to happen but Roberto can take them there.
Other teams that can win the Cup based on their goalies include Calgary, Anaheim, and NYR.
Sonick - the Pens? For God's sake man, the Pens? Really? Did you spend all night knocking back quart bottles of Laurentide and 50? :)
Me? I'll be happy if the Habs just make the freaking playoffs.

Lets bring this exciting thread back, since the playoffs start next week.
as i look back on my predictions, they are horrible. but my Bruins are tops in the conference so i'll take being wrong like that, anyday!
-
I watched Anaheim on Sat and Sun against San Jose, and while getting the road win was nice, not following up with the home win was a bit painful. If they remain in 7th, they're one and done in the playoffs. Getting to 6th last night would have given them a fighting chance against Calgary, but Detroit and San Jose will wipe the ice with them.

world juniors: canada vs. usa, tonigt at 7:30 pm. anyone been watching the tournament so far?

i watched a few early games while visiting family in canada last wek but have since haven't seen anything recently. can't wait to get back into it tonight. hope it's a good one.
agreed about hooters, but if they're not showing the can-usa game i might defer my visit to another night. also, i'm still a little miffed that they dropped the prime rib sandwich. only thing on the menu worth getting IMO.

most hooters have directv i believe. you should be fine

bugsy's would be the other option, but i'm not in the mood for a 30-40 minute drive.

Last year's final was much better.
At least Igor Bobkov got his confidence back. I was worried the Ducks were going to lose their next keeper after the opening game.
-
so while others here ramble on about stick-ball and the local teams' delusions of adequacy (the O's long-term chances of success mirror those of the FSS), i'm totally enjoying the stanley cup playoffs - and the fact that coverage is on CNBC & NBCSN. the expanded coverages means that i can catch 3 games a night if i wanted to/had the time.
what i'm enjoying less is the stupid violence that seems to be plaguing the playoffs so far this year. i like the rougher side of the game as much as the next guy, but shit like that hit on Hossa just doesn't belong. i just heard that suspension #8 will be handed out soon. there were 7 suspension during the entire playoffs last year, we've already topped that this year and we're not even out of the first round. seem to be a lot more stupid penalties going down this year too - players getting caught taking obvious cheap shots, losing their cool in critical situations, over-doing the protect-the-goalie gig, etc. it's not just the rookies, either. WTF is going on this year? did someone publish a study that proves that the value of the irritation and distraction caused by jabbing the opponent in the face is greater than the risk caused by taking a penalty?!? head in the game, boys.
pens/flyers and rangers/sens have been great series so far. what i wouldn't have given to be in scotia place tonight when Turris scored that overtime winner. shaking my head in disgust at vancouver.

Go Caps ;D

y'all ready to do this?

bruins over wings in 5 (sorry jules...)
I'm just thrilled we made the playoffs. Next year the Wings can make a run. Our cap geek page makes me warm and fuzzy.
-
NHL.com has an online bracket-picker thingy, and even a bracket challenge you can enter:

i have the bruins hoisting the cup. i just don't see montreal getting past them, as much as i would want them to.

I had an extended drinking session with the other two Wings fans in my neighborhood last night and we all agreed quickly we thought the Wings would fare better against the Bruins than the Habs. That's a frustrating team to play against.
I'm just ready for the games to start and take my mind off every Michigan bball player electing to leave early. :(

Actually, I'm still thinking long and hard about them. Other than a Blackhawks/Pens outdoor games, I've seen a ridiculous amount of Pacific Division games.
A month and a half ago I was all about the Ducks. Then it was a month of "here come the Kings on the back of Quick again." But I really think winning the division was huge - I think LA/SJ goes 7 games and is brutal. I don't care if LA wins (I'd like to see the rivalry) or San Jose wins (I'd like to attend the games), but the winner of the next Pac Div series faces off against Boston in the final.
I'm digging deep to see if I'm being fan biased or if Anaheim can actually win this. I'll let you know when I decide.

Kings over Sharks in 7
I'm certain I'm jinxing it, but: this is starting to look like the most unintentionally idiot-savant prediction I've ever had. No team I'd rather see blow a 3-0 lead than the gutless wonder that is San Jose.
-
Amazing night of hockey. Three teams I hate went out in order of least hated to most hated in increasingly painful fashion. I hope Marleau and Thornton's wives hold a press conference immediately after the game to announce all of "their" children are illegitimate.
This San Jose team from the last decade or so is the most gutless pathetic pieces of human garbage I've ever seen. So great. So, so fucking great.
-
No team I'd rather see blow a 3-0 lead than the gutless wonder that is San Jose.
Its pretty amazing and not a single person here is surprised.
The downside is that Smackie can't attend the games, on the plus side, I think the Ducks match up better with the Kings with Quick playing the way he is.

Regardless, joe Thornton is the softest superstar in history in any sport. I hate him so much and he shits the bed EVERY. YEAR.

I already want to throw up and game 7 is over 36 hours away. As much as I enjoyed the banter with Julian a few years ago heading into the Detroit game 7, I have so many friends and family members that are Kings fans that I've basically just stopped talking to everybody for the past week or two.
Oh, and I clearly know nothing about the East. I hope I know the West....

Ovechkin appeared to suffer a fairly serious knee injury in the World Championships. Could not leave ice on his own, MRI upcoming, Russian officials pessimistic.

He was logged in the other night afterwards. I assumed the "goodbye cruel world" post just didn't go through.
3 of the last 4 seasons his Ducks have made the playoffs they've lost game 7's. That's about as brutal as it comes.

Price out for ECF. Takes a lot of air out of that series.

well, eff.
i cheered myself up after game 1 by saying "well, at least things can't get worse."

Sadly, I concur. Price being out is a game over scenario.

Brilliant hire! Caps have been leaderless for a decade and this is a game changer.
Much applause!!
-
What is up with this bullcrap "pull the goalie with five minutes to go" thing so many teams are doing? The pile of human garbage who coaches the Avs got this to work once and now it's de rigeuer no matter how many times it fails.
-
it often fails, however it rarely fails as spectacularly as it did tonight for the Rangers. effin hell, that took like, what, 4 seconds?
but it matters not. Rangers are going to end the series on Thursday, unfortunately.

Kings over Habs in 5
13 of 15 series predicted correctly, including the champion (and getting 3 of their 4 series lengths correct too). Not too shabby.
/Shameless self-promotion.

Kesler to Smackies ducks for sbisa, bonino, and ducks first rounder.

Wings drafted Dylan Larkin outta UofM. I will be drinking G&Ts long into the night to celebrate.

So our claim to fame...two broken noses. Can't say any other of the 15 can say that?

Is this soccer related material in the NHL thread? This will not stand.
-
I spent the weekend with Kings fans, which didn't help my attitude towards hockey.
Both of the deals the Ducks made over the weekend however, were clearly aimed at one thing - depth to take on the Kings. I like the win now attitude.
-
The Kesler trade was a stone-cold steal but Kesler kinda crippled Vancouver's bargaining position when he went from 6 teams he was willing to waive NTC for to 3, then eventually to 2.

Stralman to Tampa.
Detroit literally has done nothing with $15mil in cap space. Supposedly out on Niskanen.

Yeah. I keep hearing rumors of the wings trading for joe thornton, and I literally don't think I could bear to watch if that gutless weasel was on my favorite team. It'd be second only to pronger hypothetically being on the team.

And the World Juniors are to a flying start....

Heatley placed on waivers. He's effectively done in the NHL.

Heatley placed on waivers. He's effectively done in the NHL.
Too slow to play on the top line, not tough enough for any other line suitable to his speed. The groin didn't help either. Maybe nobody claims him and he gets fit in the AHA and provides depth later on, but I, like you, doubt that.
It's time for the rookie Max Friberg to play on the top line...
-
And the World Juniors are to a flying start....
unfortunately came crashing down for the 'mericans: "It was the fourth consecutive win for Russia over the U.S., which hasn?t beaten the Russians at the World Juniors since December 29, 2007.
The Americans, whom many predicted would face Canada in the final this year, will go home without a World Junior medal for the second straight year." (http://www.worldjunior2015.com/en/news/usa-rus-qf/)
i'm currently watching the final and i'm having deja vu all over again: canada's 5-1 lead over the ruskies has evaporated to 5-4, with the commies about to start the on a power play. fucking hell. would someone teach those kids to finish what they start?
-
Mike Richards getting sent to AHL (after clearing waivers) is a really sad case, similar to Wade Redden. He still has NHL talent and every team would love him in their bottom 6 forwards... but not at that salary.
-

Kinda big news at the AHL level. I'm going to miss the opportunity to see the Griffins when they'd come to Norfolk, but I agree there needs to be AHL teams on both coasts.

How he keeps getting work is beyond me.
-
Wings have no consistent, competent goalie play. Tampa would have to melt down for them to get out of the first round.
-
Wings completely stole that game last night. Outshot 46-14 and somehow won that thing. Good lord.
Of course Wings won a game 1 of a series they had no business winning last season and that was the last game they won all year. . .
-
The shoot out in the NHL and the penalty kicks in professional kick ball (oops I mean soccer) are similar gimmick rules. Either play the spot to the end or be OK with the fact that some games will end in a tie. Some of the best hockey games I have ever watched ended up as a 0-0 tie.
I particularly do not like the shoot outs in the NHL where they mysteriously create an additional point for OT games. Every regular season game should carry the same weight in the season long standings. The only reason the NHL did this is so the casual non-fan would watch the games and see an 'exciting' play. (IOW its all about the money.)
Here you go.
-
I'm fairly certain I'm the only one watching this, but I thought I would share that you cannot score a header in hockey.
I was bummed because I thought it counted (and it was pretty awesome) but alas, we play a 3rd OT....
-
hey jules - what's your take on the Babcock move?
-
hey jules - what's your take on the Babcock move?
Oh, thank you for asking. I'm sad to see him go. I'm not going to say he's not the best coach in the NHL and Wings prolly don't make the playoffs the last three seasons sans him. Undeniable.
That said, I understand when you offer a guy 60% above the next highest paid coach in the league that you can't be faulted for marching an offer 233% above 2nd highest coach in the league. He's not hockey Jesus. Especially with Blashill (who I maintain would have an NHL a year ago if the organization let him talk to other teams) waiting in the wings. If Blashill is the coach, then I'm ok with Babcock leaving. Wish it wasn't in division but whatever. We have a lot of Grand Rapids talent joining the wings in the next 24 months and he knows them better than anyone.
In short, I'm not devastated about it. It'll be ok. Blashill is an NHL-replacement+ level coach in my (biased) estimation.
Now, if the Wings don't sign Blashill, come talk to me again, I reserve my right to blow up this take.

The NHL pretty much needs either the Rangers or the Hawks in the final.
Good thing for them, the Ducks are managed by Boudreau.

Yes, first time in the Conference Finals. Great regular season manager - 7 Division Titles in 8 years, and the one year he didn't win, DC fired him midseason and Anaheim hired him 2 days later. Thanks?
And he always seems just minutes away from turning the corner, then the bottom falls out, usually in the last 5 minutes of the third period in a pivotal game. I thought we were seeing that when Toews scored two goals in the last 2 mins of game 5, but then Anaheim went on to win in OT.
He's 1-5 in Game 7's and the all of those Game 7 losses were at home.
-
Bruce Boudreau: compensated hockey coach. Jesus.
-
Poor, Bruce. Was really pulling for him. Those Blackhawks, man. Gah. Go Bolts?
-
As long as Bruce Boudreau remains in charge, I have to temper expectations for the playoffs.
I kept this rule until the Game 5 OT win. Then I forgot, got excited and paid the price Saturday night. Or, to be honest, my liver and my head paid the price.
I really don't know what you do if you're Anaheim. They made all their off season moves with that series in mind, and it still didn't work, blowing a lot of leads to have to play a game 7. Can you really fire Boudreau right now? I don't think they can.
-
To be fair, Chicago is about to implode salary cap-wise. With the Toews/Kane deals going into effect next season, they're going to be at the cap with only 13 guys signed. And then they have to go out and actually keep guys like Andrew Shaw who are RFAs/UFAs. They're going to be cutting directly from the bone.
I'd say Anaheim could just stay pat and move ahead of Chicago by default but then again I have the strongest confidence in Boudreau's ability to get the absolute least out of his team as possible as we have dicsussed before.
-

Thoughts on this? I say definitely yes, he's quite underrated.

The Bruins firesale is in full effect. Hamilton and Lucic both already gone.
Weird side note: as of this moment, the Bruins hold the #13, 14, and 15 picks in the draft.

?The Los Angeles Kings today have exercised the team's right to terminate the contract of Mike Richards for a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player's Contract. We are not prepared to provide any more detail or to discuss the underlying grounds for the contract termination at this time.?
-
HoF announcements in a few minutes. Lidstrom a lock, probably Federov and Pronger (who isn't even technically retired and continues to get paid as a player on LTIR). The NHL basically just makes rules up in the moment as it regards Pronger. Fuck that dangerous loon.
Edit: It'll be the above-mentioned three plus Phil Housley.

Lots of hockey insiders twitter accounts implying Richards messed up with some criminal violation (possibly drugs from the way its getting worded.)
Better be air-tight or the NHLPA is going to have a field day with the obvious fact that no team in the NHL wants anything as badly as the Kings want to dump Richard's salary.

I held out on commenting on this until terms were released. 6.875million annual cap hit until age 36 for a guy who's basically down to a 45-50 point player already at this point? Not loving that. Maybe at half that length. This seems like an overpay to me.
-
Enjoyed the Wings first pre-season game last night. Went with Hockeystreams instead of Game Center/Center Ice for the first time. Liking it so far, good connection.
-
how much does a Hockeystreams subscription cost?
-
how much does a Hockeystreams subscription cost?
109/year. And it's an actual year, not an NHL season. The major Junior, AHL, and international hockey coverage it provides definitely puts that far ahead of anything else.

That's pretty sweet that they have AHL. The 3 on 3 OT makes me super nervous. Caps first pre season game had 56 seconds of OT. Over shot the net, went zooming around the boards, 3 on 1 broke out and boom it was over. Exciting and can't imagine how insanely stressful that will get in the season.
-
Wings/Hawks had 3 on 3 as well. Faceoffs are at an all time premium because it's very hard to get the puck back with that little much ice. Definitely favors the higher skill team.
Sadly the Wings played their "B" lineup vs the Hawks "A" lineup so they lost. AHL guys vs Toews and Hossa 3 on 3 is a disaster. Wings are playing their A-lineup vs Chicago's B-lineup tonite in Detroit and its one of those earmarked pre-season games where regardless of score they will play a 5 minute 3on3 overtime (even if a team scores) so hopefully we get a better look at it.

I really thought the Ducks were tanking to get Bruce fired before the break, then they were going to turn it on.

D Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks
D Marc-Edouard Vlasic, San Jose Sharks
D Shea Weber, Nashville Predators

pretty solid, IMHO.

And, as predicted, again, ding.....
This is the 4th straight year the Ducks had a 3-2 series lead and lost Game 7 at home.
Getzlaf and Perry are 0-5 in game sevens. They've never even had a lead in a game 7.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again - there's no way Boudreau survives this, right?
-
'Anaheim will have to make changes this offseason, but aside from Frederik Andersen, they?re mostly depth guys and mid-season additions. The real question is coach Bruce Boudreau, who has won four Pacific Division titles in his four seasons with the Ducks, and took them increasingly deeper into the playoffs?until this year. Boudreau is 181-81-32 in Anaheim, a fantastic number. He?s also 1-7 in Game 7s in his career. If there?s anything to exorcise, it may begin with him.'

I'd rather not make the playoffs then go in knowing you will go down in a ball of flames. We fans just can't take it any more.

does losing in 7 really constitute going "down in a ball of flames"?
i'm not denying your pain, just questioning your choice of words...
-
Big Willy fined $2403.67 for his knee on knee hit to Conor Sheary. Seems like a pretty specific number. I wonder how they come up with that.
Obviously don't want to see ANYONE getting hit like this and I especially don't like it coming from Tom Wilson. His reputation will only get worse as they go against the golden Penguins and the angel Sidney Crosby.

I assumed my use of the word "flames" upset your Canadian heritage.
As for the Ducks, while not often talked about, under Boudreau, the Ducks are also 1-5 in Game 6 and have never even had a lead in any of the subsequent game 7's. All while being the higher seed. That my friend, is going down in a ball of flames.

Did not know that!
Brooks Orpik gets a 3 game suspension for his hit in Saturday's game. Millbury called him a "predator" who hunts people down for hits. Don't recall him giving him this much grief when he was a Penguin... The hit was nasty, but I wouldn't call him a "Predator". Caps have, arguably, played better with Orpik out of the line up. He's made some super bone headed plays in these 2 series. Will be interesting to see who we can get to neutralize Geno.

Hit the Caps game on Saturday. Was fairly surprised to see how few Pens fans there were. They were mostly confined to the nose bleeds, lots and lots of red in the stands. Nice to see DC fans stand strong instead of just selling the tickets and letting the hoard of Pitt fans takeover the phone booth.

Caps just really have to go out in extraordinary fashion every year. Can't believe THAT team lost to a glorified AHL team. Credit to Pitt, but god damn. Insane how flat the Caps came out of the gate. Holtby letting in a softie to start must have deflated them. Sheesh.

I had Caps season tickets for three years... I enjoyed every game EXCEPT Penguins, Rangers, and Bruins. Fanaticism at its scariest. I literally feared for my life at those games.
Always thought Pens fans were the worst. Never had any problems with Bruins fans. Really thought Pens and Flyers fans were the worst of the worst.

They mentioned it, but I sincerely think it was just people not wanting to A. See anymore of the fucking Pens and B. Possibly see those shitbags win another cup
Glad they won it in San Jose because fuck their stupid fans.
This is SO shitty for the NHL. I think one of the games garnered less than 2 million viewers. Insane. I think it was game 2 or 3. I was blown away that they put any of the games on NBCS. That's so insane. Next year I wouldn't be surprised it they are ALL on NBCS.

the tears make this even better! thanks

Thanks for supporting a team ruining the sport.

so great

As I discussed with Sweets, I watched not one second of this NHL Finals for the first time. Between the two teams, you have approximately 30 dudes who look like they pay for sex. I literally loathe both of those teams. The only sports final more odious than Pittsburg v San Jose in my estimation would be Peyton Manning v clone Peyton Manning. So ugh.
-
Congrats to godsshoeshine or whatever,

The most disgusting part -- while appreciate the shade he's throwing at Toronto, that's prime -- is the Hamburgler playing so well. The #FatAccepatance people have to be having a field day with Captain 40"-Waist-Line coming up large.

I have a long-standing tradition of refusing to spell it correctly. HAve you been to Pittsburg? You'd want to get the "H" out of there too if you have.

The Ducks acquire a 2016 first-round draft selection (30th overall) and a 2017 second-round pick from the Toronto Maple Leafs for goaltender Frederik Andersen. Toronto promptly signs him to a 5 year deal.

anyone watch the world cup of hockey?
i got really excited when they first announced it, way back when. it was a fun tournament but it didn't quite live up to my personal hype.
last night's final was ridiculous. europe led for, what, 50 minutes of the game? they were the better team last night, but somehow canada pulled out 2 goals in the last 2 minutes of play. recap. (http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/17673353/nhl-world-cup-hockey-team-canada-continues-run-dominance-world-cup-win)
canada's dominance on the world stage is getting a little... predictable. it won't last, and i'll miss it when it's gone, but this tournament had the feeling of "let's invite everyone to a party where i can show them up in front of the home crowd."
-
I was initially excited for the WCOH as well but didn't really get sucked into it at all. Seemed like it went by too fast. After Russia (Caps heavy team) got bounced I quit watching. From what I've read the TV ratings were not nearly what the NHL was hoping for (even in Canada). I'm not sure we'll see another one in 4 years...or whenver they are planning the next one. At least Trotz and Holtby finally won something... ::)
-
I watched a fair bit of it and posted in another thread about it at some point. The young guns were the most fun part of the whole thing and I was bitterly angry when they didn't make the knockout round. Team USA was a poorly designed mess as I expected and they shit the bed. Once Russia went out I felt like it was a forgone conclusion Canada would steamroll and true to form Canada steamrolled. There's talk on hockeybuzz about changes to to teams going forward -- promotion and relegation!! -- that's cool.
My red wings are at a weird place where it's hard to be enthused about them. I know that is the epitome of a spoiled child statement but it's true. I'm much more excited for my beloved Michigan's first (exhibition) match against Windsor (OHL) on Sunday than I am the Wings first game. (I'm also chewing my nails waiting for BTN+ to make a call on airing it!) but I digress, discussing college hockey is probably too beyond the pale even for this thread.
-
Oh, I have another hockey related thought to share. Last season I purchased HockeyStreams, the semi-legal Swedish substitute for NHL.tv, as you may have read about in this very thread.
I cannot anti-recommend this strongly enough. If I was still doing Julian's America, it'd get a 0.0 out of 10. I was sucked in by the allure of AHL and juniors footage but it was awful. The streaming quality, even with super fast internet and everything hardwired, was garbage. Multiple freezes for most games. Had to turn up manually changing servers every few minutes until I lucked into one that wasn't overloaded and within a period, that feed would go to shit. Watching a game from the night before went seamlessly but live games were a wreck.
tl; dr - DO NOT BUY HOCKEYSTREAMS!! I am hopeful that NHL.tv his season proves as well run as MLB.tv (which does all the technical backend for both).
-
I have NHLtv and after some pretty major issues when it kicked off it's definitely worth the $130 if you watch hockey on a nightly, or even regular, basis.
-

Great to hear. Have bought the cable version of it for many years but games aren't in HD unless you have satellite. Smacking has also said the Internet version is great (and I've enjoyed MLB.tv the last two years) so I'm sure it'll be a good purchase.
-
let's discuss the true highlight of the WCOH: the ref cam. can we put these on nhl refs, puh-lease?!?
but I digress, discussing college hockey is probably too beyond the pale even for this thread.
why not? this is the hockey thread. college and minor league hockey belongs here!

Cool so can we talk about everyone's thoughts on the B10 moving their conference tourney back to higher seeds home arenas? YOST IS GOING TO GET LIT. (As the kids say.)

I was more doom and gloom yesterday. Man, I really hate bounces. I hate to think MAN CAPS GET NO BOUNCES, but it is frustrating as hell to see so many plays develop in front of the net and Caps just can't elevate it or get a lucky bounce. Still, Leafs need 2 more games to win and I don't think they'll get there.
I'm WAY more surprised that the Blackhawks are down 3-0. Wow.
-
I'm WAY more surprised that the Blackhawks are down 3-0. Wow.
Yeah, agreed. Could I see them possibly losing a series to a team with Rinne in goal? Yeah. Did I see 3-0 with two home shutouts? Noooooo, sir.
-
Trotz's playoff record is just as bad i believe.

Pending the outcome of this season, Trotz has only won one division title and was bounced in the second round.
Bruce has won 8 division titles, and has never coached in the Stanley Cup finals, and only once coached in the Conference Finals, 7 times losing game 7's!
But if you were up until 10:30 PT last night, that was all forgotten by Ducks fans!

At least you ended the scoring drought.
Interested to see how that pans out and if the Blue Jackets have anything left. Have they lost 10 in a row now? Sheesh!
-
^^ I had Calgary as my darkhorse to win the West but boy am I looking stupid.
Couldn't have been a worse draw for them. Anaheim has owned them for over a decade - the Flames haven't won in Anaheim since this was a thing:
And with the cheap shot that put Fowler out in their last regular season meeting, this is a motivated Anaheim squad. My biggest fear happened last night (Gibson not up to the task), yet they still gutted out an amazing comeback. It's all mental for the Flames now.

If you repeatedly call me a piece of shit father on the forum and send me a stalker type letter with my personal information and make light/fun of my child's disability you better believe I'll report you.... You're lucky you're still on here man... Remember that...because I could have asked for you to be banned and I think you would have been banned but I actually did the opposite...The way I look at it the board is a small community and we really need everyone..... As things stand you've been banned one time and suspended one time so try to walk a straight line.
But I really thought this was all in the past.. I get that the board needs a certain amount of drama and all but come on! Find somebody else.. I'm not interested in being a part of 930 Forum TMZ or whatever..... and I ain't going anywhere so you might try getting along..
Killsally left due to James Ford's posting something made up about his marijuana use... but he really kind of cracked and began exhibiting psychopathic behavior...
I guess my personal life is kind of lame but maybe it will pick up....

The Caps finally show some mental toughness in the playoffs. Now the Pens...God help me.
-
I'm sure the nerves will ramp up, or that I know how a majority of these Pens series have gone, but I am pretty calm thinking about that series. I feel like this might be flipped and the Caps can hit the Pens in the jaw to start the series. The Jackets were tough but didn't get lose 10 in a row until that game 4 win? The Leafs may have been the kickstart the Caps needed.
It's still the Pens and it's still the Caps. We'll see. I have hope!
-
With Chicago and Columbus both out, this feels like way to big of a series for the second round. *shakes fist at silly NHL playoff format*
-
I for the life of me don't understand the format. To get division rivalries going? Beating a "fast" team gives me some hope for sure. Holtby needs to play like he did last night...if he does, we can move on.
-
Yes it's to get divisional rivalries going. But then they made the insane concession of the two wild cards which blows that idea up (not that it was a particular meritorious idea to begin with.)
-
So stupid. Those caps tix are already through the roof for Thursday. I really think this is it for this core if they can't make it this year. Then again this has been happening for a decade so who knows if Leonsis will want changes.
-
I told you there was nothing to worry about unless you had Boudreau behind the bench.
I too disagree with the format change. The Caps should be playing the Rangers and the Ducks should be playing Nashville.
-
On the bright side, no Boudreau behind the bench for game 7.
-
How do you follow the puck? I don't like this sport and fighting is boring and cliche. Plus, people who wear hockey jerseys look gd ridiculous.
-
How do you follow the puck? I don't like this sport and fighting is boring and cliche. Plus, people who wear hockey jerseys look gd ridiculous.
I follow with my eyes. The fighting doesn't happen all that much in the playoffs [if at all] no team wants to be on the PK or lose a player for the misconduct. Caps have been mashing the Pens this series. Jackets did the same thing though. After the Caps went down 3-1 I lost faith. Orlov kicked in a goal for christs sake. I foresee the end of the season tonight. All I want is to be proven wrong and for the Caps to somehow storm back and win 3 in a row... sigh.
EDIT: also holy shit the Ducks lol

Yeah, quite the roller coaster ride this weekend. The only thing allowing me to sleep last night and the next two is the lack of Boudreau, but it's impossible to forget the last 4 years....
I did receive this text last night though: "the Ducks have a better chance of winning a game 7 then the Caps ever beating the pens in in best of 7 series" and surprisingly it wasn't from Godsshoeshine

I, posted that comment after I had had two beers, after I normally don't drink. That's why I don't drink.

If hockey wants to take back the youth market, they need to move their apparel deal from Reebok to Brooks Brothers.

First off, f-you for not including the Ducks in that statement.
Secondly, nice casual bone throw in the direction of the caps, your clever use of "at some point" indicates you may not think it's tonight. Well played.
And lastly, I didn't sleep at all last night. Whatever happens in the first game, DO NOT go to overtime as it will just prolong my agony.

I'll take the Caps over the Ducks. Ducks will learn "Ah shit I guess it wasn't JUST Boudreau".
Caps have outplayed the Pens almost the entire series. I think Pens puck luck runs out and being outplayed catches up to them, if it hasn't already. They looked completely lost and out matched in game 6. Fleury allowed 8 straight goals to the Caps since game 5. IT'S TIME.
.....r-right?

i could see the caps doing something stupid and trading ovie in the next couple of years. i don't see many people blaming trotz this morning
-

You mean the ten million dollar cap hit for the next four seasons that just scored 33+36 and is going to be 32 at the start of next season? "Stupid" is a weird adjective to use. Backstrom is out-pointing him over the last 4 seasons aggregate.
There is a definite possibility the cap flexibility afforded by off loading him and getting a young top-6 forward back can help the young core (of which Ovechkin is not) extend their window for several seasons. Or if you want to go win now, do something nuts like trade for Subban straight up. You're telling me Subban doesn't put that team minus-OV closer to a cup?
-
Huge Ovi fan but I do think it's time to move on and trade him while he can still bring back value. I read this today and it speaks volumes to how this group just can't get it done...
Out of the16-team Eastern Conference only 4 teams have failed to make
the 3rd round since Ovechkin came into the league.

you presume that the caps would pull of a trade without retaining salary and actually make a good trade. i do not
if the caps traded ovie and kept trotz i would bet ovie gets a cup before the caps
-
How 'bout you just don't protect him and let the Las Vegas Knights take his salary on?
Sure you lose the trade value, but you don't take the salary cap hit.

Of course Backstrom gets more points, he's a center. His job is to spread the puck around. I don't see how trading Ovi helps this team. Pretty sure any team in the NHL would gladly take him.
I've seen blame thrown everywhere. I'll be surprised if Trotz comes back next season. 3 years of the same old same old. Insane. Build around Backstrom and Burakovsky. Heh.

He does not. No-trade yes (limited; 10-team no-trade list), but not a no-movement clause.

That's not the same as the concept of trading OV is stupid just because someone could do it in a dumb way. That's sort of like saying the invention of the automobile was dumb because someone might crash.

You (not you personally godsshoeshine, the general you) are telling me both teams wouldn't jump at:
Capitals
William Nylander
Connor BrownJames Van Riemsdyk or Tyler Bozak
A Prospect
A 1st Round Pick
Maple Leafs
Ovechkin
A 3rd Round Pick
Maple Leafs jump into legit Cup contention right away, pair the last 3-4 elite years of Ovechkin with Matthews, Kadri, van Riemsdyk or Bozak, Brown et al.
Caps get younger (and acquire guys who will be RFAs in next negotiations), shed 8.54.8mil in cap space (hello Shattenkirk and Oshie potentially returning), extend the window of the team overall.
There are trades to be made.
EDIT: Looking at Capfriendly, I thought Maple Leafs were more fungible on cap space. Probably have to send Van Riemsdyk or Bozak back instead of Brown and both have modified NTCs (I can't imagine Caps would be one of the teams specified on either).
-
Not sure I would want Shattenkirk returning at this point.
-
How 'bout you just don't protect him and let the Las Vegas Knights take his salary on?

Not even my favorite idea, though I like it a lot. How about this one: Protect Ovechkin, then trade him to Vegas, who doesn't have a salary cap. Surely you will get something from a number of teams who couldn't put together a one-on-one trade with the Caps, and presumably a better collection of talent (of course salary cap would still apply to DC).
-

Funny. I was doing this research, got distracted, came back to finish it on my lunch and said, "there's no way Jules could have not seen this." When I went back to recheck the names I had written down, I saw your edits. Nice work - I was coming to a similar conclusion.

Yeah. If I were the Caps and I was offered the Van Riemsdyk option of that (and OV was open to waiving his NTC), I'd have to consider that strongly.
-
(and OV was open to waiving his NTC)
Ovechkin submits a list of 10 teams to which he would refuse a trade prior to each season. I can't imagine Toronto is on that list.

You'd rather play for Detroit than Tampa or Columbus? Have you seen that steaming pile of crap?
Also Minnesota is indefensible. Fanbase is amazing, team is quite good.
-
cbus would be on my list; no way i'd play for torts even though he looks like my uncle
agreed that tampa is crazy. smackie loves the strip clubs for one

I forgot about Torts. Totally fair inclusion.

My Mother-in-law spends the majority of the hockey season in Tampa. She's great, but sorry fella's, that's just not workable.

There is no way, less than 24 hours after breaking the Boudreau curse, I'm going anywhere near that guy.

I'd, somehow, rather watch Cavs/Warriors AGAIN.

A sweep would just be too easy for Caps fans. Almost letting us off easy. This isn't over yet. They will give us hope before devastating us in the most heartbreaking way possible.

Vegas v Winnipeg and Caps v Tampa Bay would be the oddest final four in recent memory.

If we can play like we did last night I think we have a prayer. The physical play def rattled the bolts. That being said...my stress level will be though the roof tomorrow night. Playoff hockey isn't even fun to watch when your team is playing.

Weird ass story out of Ottawa about WAGs filing restraining orders against each other (https://deadspin.com/erik-karlssons-wife-melinda-accuses-teammates-girlfrien-1826772450)
In an Instagram post mourning his son’s death, Erik Karlsson posted a photo of Axel’s tiny footprints. In the post, Karlsson thanked the city and the team’s fans for their love and support and wrote: “We feel very lucky to be Axel’s parents. Even though he was stillborn, we know we will hold him again one day under different circumstances and the joy he gave us will be with us forever.”
The post garnered more than 10,000 comments, with the overwhelming majority of them expressions of support and sympathy for the couple. However, one comment, posted by user @sandydandy45, stood out: “I feel bad for the baby he didn’t have a chance with Melinda popping pain killer medication everyday.”
It took the league’s top defenceman just seven minutes to respond: “How dare you. You have been making fake accounts and buying hacked ones for months to harass me and my wife but this is an all new low even for you. You are a disgusting person.”

You could have told me this was happening in the NHL, and not told me the team, and I would have guessed Ottawa.
Also - I'll take the wife girlfriend in this one, for sure.
-
You could have told me this was happening in the NHL, and not told me the team, and I would have guessed Ottawa.
I would've considered "perhaps that's what happened to Chicago last season" for a half-second before landing on Ottawa.

lemme try that again...

Up until the night they won the Cup, my wife thought Ovechkin's first name was "Ove." True story.
I didn't go to the parade but saw many pathetic adults wearing Caps jerseys on the train and around town. Am I right that the names are of players and not the people themselves? Otherwise, it seems like we have lots of Russian people in DC.
If so, then I saw all kinds of player names on the jerseys, but I saw nobody wearing the jersey of one of the playoff heroes, Smith-Pelley. Are people bigoted against guys with hyphenated names?

Do you think your wife and child comes off well in your retelling of these sort of events? A common theme seems to be them being willfully ignorant of things. Is this a passive aggressive attack on them from your side?
Seriously.

Actually I think it's pretty cool that she doesn't give a shit about professional sports and jock culture, and marches to the beat of her own drummer. Instead of being one of these little women who think they have to like sports to make their man happy. If you don't think she comes across as anything less than cool in that story, maybe it's you who has the bro sickness.

I don't think "cool" or ones affection or disdain for sports culture comes into it. My mom doesn't watch sports but I guarantee she knows who LeBron James, Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Tom Brady, et al are. She knows this because they are omnipresent outside of sports.
Again, a common theme of your stories seems to be your wife/child supposedly not knowing what extremely ubiquitous things/people are and then passing this off like its some sign of cultural or intellectual superiority. I don't get bragging about being ignorant. It's fine to be ignorant -- there's lots of things I am not well versed in -- but this "look how smart my family is with their not knowing about things" shtick is just ill-conceived. Its what 12 year-olds do to look "edgy" and "outsider".

I can tell you she does know who Lebron James is, because we sometimes watch basketball, and because he has appeared in movie and commercials, etc. She knows who Tom Brady is, because he's the guy married to Gisele Bundchen. I can guarantee you she doesn't know who Sidney Crosby is, because she doesn't follow hockey. She knows who Ovechkin is, because he's a DC sports guy...if he played in Ottawa I guarantee she wouldn't know him...but given that DC people refer to him as "Ove", I can certainly see how she would think that was his first name (I posted it because I thought it was funny, not because I thought it was ignorant.)
I can guarantee you my mom doesn't know *any* of the athletes you mentioned...maybe Lebron.
Do you really think most of the general population knows who Disney Crosby is? You really are a meathead jock.
Some people just aren't into popular culture like you are. My college roommate in the late 80's listened to all kinds of weird avant-garde music, yet when I mentioned R.E.M. to him, he honestly had no clue who they were. And he definitely wasn't trying to be an outsider or edgy, that's just who he was, Dan from Rochester.
Also, I'm sorry, but my 10 year old daughter probably knows more pop culture people than I do. She's always going on about Shawn Mendes or Charlie Puth or Selena Gomez, or whatever the tweens are into these days. But she has no interest in sports or indie music and of course doesn't know any sports celebs or indie musicians. Though she did know Ovechkin's first name, haha.

Literally any of the tens of boardies who've ever met me can attest that the idea of me being a jock is possibly the funniest thing you've ever said.

There is a huge difference between (a) being "into" popular culture, (b) being aware of the popular culture that exists around you, and (c) boasting about being blissfully unaware of the zeitgeist.

Devante Smith-Pelly only became a household name during this playoff run. prior to this, DSP was just another 3rd/4th line winger, he wasn't a consistent starter, he only scored 7 goals all season (vs. his 7 in the playoffs), etc. so he came outta nowhere and was an unexpected hero. that's why no one had his jersey... yet. (fyi those jerseys are expensive. not many fans run out and drop $125 on a new jersey because a player has a hot streak.)

For the record, I'm going to guess I've run more marathons (17) than the tens of other posters on this board. And I watch the World Series and NBA Finals. And I went to the Miami Open tennis tournament this year. Maybe I'm a meathead jock. :)

Haha, good one! I think there actually is a band called Tennis. I'm not sure if they are teens.
I'll let Celeste's words be (hopefully) the last, from me: (and hope she doesn't get mad for posting this!)
also (our daughter) doesn't try to look edgy or outsider, she embraces pop culture
I also don't try to look edgy or outsider...I'm a 46 year old married mom...I really do not care about looking cool...I am what I am
I don't know sports names because I literally don't give a shit and I actually resent the outsize influence professional (and college) sports have in America
it's funny that you said I don't pretend to like sports like being one of these little women who think they have to like sports to make their man happy
when I said that is one reason why I hold back what I really think about professional sports.. I don't want to sound like a drippy bitch with men...
I'll go enjoy the weather at a baseball game or the hot bodies at a basketball or tennis game, but really, if I never watched a sporting event again, I'd be cool with that...

I honestly think I was willfully rejecting caring about the Caps stuff because it just seemed to go on So. Damn. Long. and I am sick of all the stocky white people blockhead types that seem to think hockey is so cool...I just get sick of the rah rah blah blah

I find the NBA to be simultaneously the most interesting and most obnoxious fan base. NBA twitter is bizarre. You can take any player, no matter how good, how many all star games they've been in, how lock solid their hall of fame credentials are, and 15% of NBA twitter fans will think he straight up sucks. "Clyde Drexler would hold LeBron James scoreless!" "Steph Curry should be coming off the bench!" "Bob Cousy would school Kobe Bryant!"
These people are simultaneously fascinating and lunatics.

My wife would rather talk about putting Tristan Thompson's face on LeBron's body. And how ridiculous Steph and Lebron and Harden's facial hair is. Haha. Can you blame her? Girls gonna be girls.
And I'll agree with you there about NBA fans. I don't spend much time on sports forums, but when I've crossed paths NBA talk online, and well, there's probably a reason I don't spend time on NBA/sports forums.

To get us back on topic, other hockey WAGs are weighing in and confirm Hoffman's fiancee is a lunatic (https://nypost.com/2018/06/13/nhl-wives-teammates-fiancees-alleged-harassment-took-scary-turn/).
“Her fixation with Mel has always been unhealthy. Then it became scary. So glad Mel is protecting herself. No team will welcome this girl to the room.”
“oh man if you only knew how unsurprising this actually is. horrible just horrible. and the worst part of all of this is how @MelindaCurrey just wanted to keep this private because she’s THAT nice of a person even when a person can be this cruel to her.”

They both look cray. But Hoffman's is more cray.

so... anyone think that Ovie has put down the Cup yet?

So, I'm assuming getting tickets from here on out to Eternity, will either be near to Impossible or, will cost you a small fortune.

are you talking about Caps tickets? if so, no. the season opener will be a tough get, and now you can add vegas to the list of "premium opponents", but otherwise... nah.

Rumor has is he called it a cheap piece of plastic that doesn't even protect his big Russian balls.

Ticket prices will def jump quite a bit. I had season tickets from 2011-2015 and in 2011 and 2012 I could sell my seats for above face whenever I couldn't go. 2013-2015 I was taking a loss every time I had to sell. I'm guessing most games will be selling out and ticket sellers will be making their money back and then some... unless we really start to suck.

ovie promised that they won't be.

Trotz quit.
-
This is very strange but you could tell there was something wrong in his interviews post cup win. I suspect Trotz did not get along with Ted or a deal would have been done. You just don't let a coach walk after winning a Cup. Looks bad for the franchise.
-
Agreed. I can't imagine they won't give the gig to Todd Reirden, but it was Trotz' to turn down. His contract contained an automatic two-year extension for winning the Cup, but the salary that went with it was not acceptable to him. Considering the deals Babcock and Quenneville got, i'm guessing the Caps offer was nowhere near there.
-
He'll most likely be coaching the Islanders next year. Not sure I'd want to clean up that mess but if the price is right I'm sure he will.

sous-vide'ing in the Cup... the Caps are going to ruin it for all future winners (but gawd it's fun to watch them do it).
-
I think they are just raising the bar

they really need to do some internal structural retrofit to support these 200-300 pound guys doing keg stands
because we all know...It's gonna happen...a lot more times, regardless who wins again
it's good to see grown men have some fun tho

That is a pretty low bar. I do love their curly fries...and Arbys in general. I think I live near one of the only Arbys in the area in Alexandria. Roast beef sandwich is legit. I realize this is not a popular opinion.

Have you seen this Red Wings team? Hooboy.
-
Roast beef sandwich is legit. I realize this is not a popular opinion.
Arby's "roast beef" is mostly' round that has been ground then pressed with added gelatin and then formed into a shape
now their Brisket is a lot closer to actual meat from a cow

I'm actually a pretty avid smoker (bbq) and I haven't tried the brisket there...but I do like the roast beef sandwich for a quick bite....again, I'm not proud of this. Much better than McDonalds IMO...and yes, the redwings are a mess.

The New Chevy Silverado Trail Boss Stalling on Detroit's Hockey Arena Ice Is a Perfect Metaphor (https://jalopnik.com/the-new-chevy-silverado-trail-boss-stalling-on-detroits-1830769305)
If Detroiters know anything, they know about cars, hockey and disappointment. Their experience in all three came in handy [last week] when a brand-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss stalled on the ice at the Little Caesars Arena, the new home of the Detroit Red Wings.
-
The Wings are surprisingly not total shit as expected, which is pissing me off since they're still at least somewhat shit but now they're missing out on Jack Hughes because of it.

hey smax - got some must-watch TV for ya:
Will Ferrell to Join LA Kings vs. Sharks Broadcast as 'Anchorman's' Ron Burgundy (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2826886-will-ferrell-to-join-la-kings-vs-sharks-broadcast-as-anchormans-ron-burgundy)
Stay classy, hockey players. Ron Burgundy will be in the building for Thursday's game between the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.
The Kings announced Will Ferrell's character, Burgundy, will join the Fox Sports West broadcast of the game in Staples Center.
His appearance will come at the start of the second period
(only downside is that you have to watch the kings...)

Sadly, I won't get this because they're playing the Sharks. The LA Feed will be blacked out and I'll have to watch the Sharks feed, which is on Comcast and they won't even splice in the Fox feed. Shame.

bummer. i suspect it'll show up elsewhere (youtube, twitter, nhl.com, fsn, etc...)

Still trying to wrap my head around this Corey Perry buyout.
I honestly don't know enough about the NHL Salary Cap to full understand it, but seems like a strange move to save $6m in salary cap space this season as it drops to $2m next season.

their look has gotten a surprising amount of love online... folks are down with the branding.
my boss is a huge hockey fan and has season tickets. he's really upset they didn't call themselves the Metropolitans, so they could claim a Stanley Cup (1917). i agree with the decision to go with something more, uh, modern and marketable.

I heard the NHL very strongly asked them not to pick that because they did not want to rename a division.
I think the dark sweaters are absolutely incredible looking and this branding is out of the park. I love it.

It’s not often you see a goalie win a game 7 shutout 1-0 and not even get one of the three stars of the game, but it happens when the other team puts approximately 15 total shots on net. What a dog of a performance by the Isles.

this is not how I spent this Four Nations intermission break. But you do you.
i spent the first period & first intermission booing the american national anthem. an hour of booing is hard on the ol' vocal chords.
spent second and third period on edge of my seat.
spent overtime in awe of the Wall Of Binnington.
