Saw the NYC Miki Berenyi Trio w/Budgie/Lol Tolhurst opening. What an insanely fun evening. Both bands used backing tracks to a degree, but Miki's was pretty much just drums/percussion. Loved the performance, and it was all over the place from Lush to Piroshka to MB3 tunes. It felt like it went incredibly fast, which is always a sign that it's a good show. Lol and Budgie did their own thing, and it was really interesting and fun to watch. Lol is stoic, Budgie is a total showman. Had Budgie sign my copy of "Kaleidoscope" and he was incredibly sweet. Miki is always funny as fuck and a joy. Always fun to gossip about stuff like the Cocteau Twins' disastrous 1994 tour. And Mick from Modern English was on bass for Miki...lovely guy. He told me that the original 44 bands to play Atlantis got engraved watches from Seth. He didn't have his on, but he absolutely loves it. Really nice touch Seth!

Sounds heavenly!

6/9/24: English Teacher, The Atlantis

This was my first time At Atlantis. I went to the original 9:30 probably a half dozen times, but it's been gone so long I only have vague memories. This place reminded me of a mini-9:30 or a mini-Howard Theater.

English Teacher are riding an 89 on Metacritic and 7.4 on Pitchfork. Vas tells me they are more popular in England. They didn't even sell out the Atlantis (it was Sunday.) Band was good, singer was cute (cue Cock (sorry for the second genital area reference in one review, it's you guys who are calling yourself this)  calling me a dirty old man), set was brief (59 mins). So brief that the ride home was longer, due to night construction on 395. Overall, an enjoyable show but I wasn't blown away.

After the show, I stopped by the 9:30 box office to get a future show ticket. I have to say that the GWAR show had by far the most between set cigarette smokers outside than any band whose crowd I was part of or observed, ever.

Saw Dan Boeckner last night. As good as expected. Ticket sales were disappointing, place was half full. And he only charged $25.

I never heard It's Complicated until last night. Blew my mind. Late Handsome Furs may have been Dan's best work. Did Enjoy the old classic Dan Wolf Parade songs last night.

Dan with his unique blend of punk influenced guitars with synthesizers is still one of the most innovative musicians in rock. Really wish he'd play Operators songs again.

Saw Dresden Dolls last night. Super fun show. Sold out (or nearly sold out) show, but got a spot 2nd row from the stage.

I really didn't know anything about this band, and had only heard the name before. Enjoyed the performance / dramatic flair immensely. Not a "forever band" for me, but glad to have seen them.

There was a fellow in my immediate vicinity with an unfortunate BO problem. Had to move away after a few songs. Presume not all DD shows / fans suffer from the same malady.

Marnie Stern...great as always.  I had never seen her solo, and it was a mix of playing to backing drums / guitar tracks and just solo shredding.  She was womanning her merch booth and I bought a shirt from her, and played it real cooool.   It's the second time I bought this same shirt...first one from her set opening for Blonde Redhead last year immediately shrunk in the wash and is now a pretty obscene belly shirt.  I feel like I'm looking OK in my older age, but can't quite pull this off, unfortunately.

Then turned around and literally ran into Janet Weiss.

Quasi isn't a band i really listen to that much, but man, they're so good.  I don't know if I seen many other bands having so much fun on stage.  Just wall to wall smiles.  And Janet is really just the best drummer.

She's probably the musician I've seen in the most bands (SK, Quasi, Wild Flag, the Jicks, probably one more I'm forgetting maybe?), other than Mary Timony

Seth spotting at Charley Crockett. Hard to believe he's missing the Hulk Hogan political debut

Tonight we had pretty much a perfect setlist from The Hives, was a tad worried about “Tick Tick Boom” but it was an awesome closer.  Just a fun show Howlin’ Pelle had the audience in the palm of his hand.

His Lordship gave us a really great set firey set of raw rock and roll, hopefully at some point their album will be available in the US.

A high energy show from both bands. I really needed this. Thanks to hutch for a great night.

Yup still buzzing from last night’s show, nothing like the spirit of rock and roll to clean out the toxins.  Both drummers last night were just on point and The Hives bassist is definitely their secret weapon.  The Hives really are just a well oiled raucous machine, just a joy to watch.  And really nice outing for His Lordship
