According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Orioles balked at signing Grant Balfour because of knee and wrist issues. It was largely assumed that the deal fell apart because of a shoulder concern, but Olney's source says otherwise.

At this point who even cares anymore?  Whomever the source is should just the f up and sign someone already.

Apparently the O's are no longer shopping for a closer and will take care of it in house.  They are now searching for a veteran starter...this is comical.

I'll admit the offseason so far has been less than satisfying.  But throwing money at below average players just because the rest of baseball is doing it doesn't make much sense either.  I'm not a fan of Balfour anyway.  He's a dick.

He's a dick who gets guys out.  It's not the person for me as much as it's identifying a problem, trying to save money, then agreeing to shell out $15m, back tracking, deciding not to spend the money, and then deciding you don't have that problem any longer - despite doing nothing to fix it besides saving money.

If you could have fixed the problem from within the organization, don't you think they would have done it last season when JJ was struggling?

Santana and Garza are both above average and there are other guys out there.

One thing is clear - the AL East sees something in that guy that the rest of the league doesn't.

Like beating a dead horse with these guys.  Who cares?  What kind of marks did they give the Angels after they made their big money moves?  How did that turn out?

It's been an incredibly busy off-season of bottom-feeding.  Some of these moves may even work out.  And it's only January.
