Twas The Night O'Radiohead...
I don't recall there being much discussion about it, but everyone just assumed that we would just let everyone in with ticket stubs from that day's Tibet show. we called HFS and told them to get ready to make a big announcement at 10 PM.
I listened to the radio on the way down to the club. if you can believe this, I had actually started having anxiety about whether the word would get out and enough people would show up. but, of course, when I pulled up people were going nuts. just coming in from all directions, feeling incredibly fortunate that they had even heard about it but now maybe starting to panic that they might not actually get in. so near yet so far, etc. that was the fastest forming line I've ever seen. it was like one of those film clips where you see an egg breaking played backwards and everything gathers instead of scatters. the line just formed - whooosh.
everything was in order, though, thanks to the staff, which I must discuss at this point.
truly one of those most amazing things about owning the 930 Club is getting to see these people operate. they are unfuckingbelievable. I mean, I think I made one phone call to whoever I got a hold of first, and the rest all happens. 8:30 that night they get told they need to put a Radiohead show on, and they put a Radiohead show on. I wish everybody could see this. the Pentagon would send people to study it if they knew.
so, first thing I do is walk up and down the line and the best part,as usual, is seeing how excited people are and trying to imagine how excited I'd be if I were one of them. which isn't too hard in this particular case. so this is getting really good, because people are just freaking.
now, I'm thinking, well let's remember this is rock and roll and things don't always happen the way they're supposed to. I better make sure this one still is. because you never know with a band like Radiohead (although I've come to know them now as very responsible). some bands that do things like this (Prince, for example) like to get everything ready and THEN decide if they really feel like playing. Chad had told me earlier that the quipment really did show up as promised and that it looked like a real gig. but, being one of those types that would never believe in UFO's until I see one for myself, I still wasn't absolutely convinced. so I went inside.
and there were road equipment cases marked Radiohead. and then I knew this was really going to happen.
to be continued...
