Title: TCV
Post by: Bags on September 02, 2009, 12:38:13 pm
Okay, to keep from clogging up the Just Announced thread....post away regarding Them Crooked Vultures here.

Now, over in JA, a presale through the band's website was mentioned.  Um, shouldn't we all sign up for that?!?!  Info hugely appreciated.  ;)

- Bags (seemingly back in action after a long hiatus)

Gonna give the band's pre-sale a shot.

I take it this is a real-quick sell-out?

I didn't see any presale info anywhere. Not sure how to sign up for it.

Looks like the other shows are $47.50.  I haven't looked up capacities, but I guess the 9:30 will be about the same.

I didn't see any presale info anywhere. Not sure how to sign up for it.

I received the password from their e-mail (The Crooked Times / Vol. 3). All pe-sales look like they're through their Web site tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Public on-sale is Saturday at 10 a.m., and the e-mail notes that "A very limited number of tickets will be sold sans service charges at the 930 club box office (815 V ST. N.W. WASHINGTON DC)"

The link for the 9:30 onsale currently takes you to the main page of the TCV site.

The link for the 9:30 onsale currently takes you to the main page of the TCV site.

I'm sure that'll change once the club sets up a destination for the link as every other link in the bands email goes directly to the ticket seller of that particular show.

Man, their official website is awful.  The type is dark gray on a black  background.

Do you have to do anything besides enter your email in "Consort" to find out about the official presale?  Anyhow, if anyone gets info, feel free to PM me.  I think this is going to be a cluster****.  The UK presale sounded like a nightmare.

Hmm, do you think the note about a small amount available at the box office means they will hold tickets back for that?  Box office isn't open at 10:00 a.m. Saturday....

Title: Re: TCV
Post by: azaghal1981 on September 02, 2009, 01:16:30 pm
Unless the club sets aside an allotment to sell when the box office opens on saturday evening, I don't see there being tickets available there by then.

Edit: beaten to the punch.

The TCV website doesn't mention a 930 presale.  Unless one is offered in today's e-mail blast, there probably won't be one.

The TCV website doesn't mention the pre-sales, the pre-sale info is in the bands email "newsletter".

I signed up for the newsletter days ago - 3 or 4 times using 2 different email accounts - and have yet to receive an email or newsletter from them.  I wasn't worried because the chatter on their boards seemed to indicate there wouldn't be a presale for the DC show.

Based on this thread I'm now officially worried.

Them Crooked Vultures 10/14 @ the club
http://forum.themcrookedvultures.com/showthread.php?t=781

i know the lineup is epic . . . but is the music?
I haven't seen any of the live clips...I generally don't waste my time with camera phone footage of bands.  But the brief canned clips of their songs that the band has released sound actually really freaking great. Every venue except the 930 is Live Nation, I believe.  Might that explain it?

Or maybe it is a 930 Club pre-sale, in addition to the band pre-sale.

it is.  930 club presale and a band website presale.  both start at same time.

edit - there are two presales.  but only one for 930.  the other presales (from their website) are for all the other venues at once.

anyhoo, presale sold out in under 2 minutes, possibly one.  at 10:02 i had my tickets all locked up, so for the fun of it i went back to see if they were all gone.  they were.

That was easy.. then again I was on it at 10 am exactly.

Glad they limited it to 2 tickets per person.

I should think that means only 500 pairs or so... they'll probably hold some back..

Don't know all the venues but the 930 is half the size or less of the Electric Factory..

I looked up the rest of the US venues, and the Club is easily the smallest.  This'll be great.

Tickets were $47.50 before charges.  Cue the "they dont even have an album out yet!" argument, but I think it's a reasonable price.  They've been playing 80-ish minute shows of original music, and seeing any of them in a club setting, or Dave drumming at all, is worth it to me.

looks like the 930 is smallest venue of this tour.  philly, toronto, detroit and columbus are all definitely bigger (in the 2000+ range).  stubbs is austin is comparable to the 930, but still holds a few hundred more.

yeah the metro show in chicago was very harsh if they caught you they kicked you out.  You couldn't even use your phone to take a pic.  Also people who did get away with getting video from the show and posting the video on youtube got a warning from Josh Homme.  The videos were taken down.  However I guess whatever happen now he has let them be put back up.

like yourself, i realize this isn't the cool thing to say - but i liked that show too.  between the music and the company, i had a great night.  saw SP a while later at the tower theater... ended up walking out before the end of the show, in order to watch the red sox earn themselves a spot at the world series.  t'was a much more entertaining use of my time, IMHO.

don't you have a sound editor, like soundforge?  downsample dat sh!t (yes, i know it's changing the bit depth not the sample rate...  ::))

Believe it or not, I don't. Maybe I should download a copy.

conversion is pretty simple: open the MP3 in SoundForge (or use the Wavewriter in Winamp to write out the WAV file and open that in SF), then poke around until you find the Bit Depth Converter - i forget which menu it's in.  Change from 24 to 16, click "apply"/"ok".  save the resulting file as a WAV, FLAC or MP3.  be warned saving as MP3 may yield an ugly result, since it's source is MP3.

or alternately, get a soundcard that can handle 24 bits :P

Does it do flac? It's what the source material is in and I don't generally do live recordings in mp3.

You might want to try googling "free audio bit depth converter" and see if anything fits the bill. SoundForge will def do it, but it's over-kill. It's like using ProTools to save a WAV as a MP3. Then again, nothing wrong with learning to edit audio files, so go for it if you're looking to learn.

Is there a better shot of getting the tickets through 930, or tickets.com?
Title: Re: TCV
Post by: eltee on September 04, 2009, 10:20:59 pm
930's ticket outlet is tickets.com.
the box office isn't open in the am tomorrow and Shadrach said that there will not be a small amount of tickets held for sale later at the window (see page 1 of this thread).

Remember folks that almost always a handful of CCs get declined and those tickets go back in the system throughout the day.  In other words, if you want tickets badly enough, check back very frequently all through the day.  We all have heard of situations where someone scores a pair of tickets to a sold out show well into the afternoon of the on sale date after it has sold out.

Yeah persistence is definitely the key with that site. I've sat on the refresh button for up to 45 minutes after supposed "sell outs" and eventually scored tickets to other shows.

"their finding out was bound to happen" - I wasn't trying to dupe anyone, I didn't know such a rule existed.  I don't know about you guys but the last thing I am paying attention to when scrambling for tickets is reading the small print.

it did say on both, and lets be honest here, a show that is in this much demand with the people involved will more than likely not let you get more than two. i mean it seems as though most who have a ticket minus some scaplers and maybe the few other people who just happen to hear about this band around the time the show was put on sale knew how this band has operated its shows in europe. limited tickets, no cameras etc. if there was a more than 2 ticket option i assure you half of the people on the board that claimed to have gotten tickets wouldnt have.

ding ding ding.  ignorance is not an excuse.  you chose to rush through, you clicked the "i agree to the terms of this sale" without reading them.  frustrating but you can't blame anyone.  sry.

How about an email telling me it was cancelled so I can try for the public onsale.  Or an email period.  I would have never known if I hadn't looked at my CC statement.

I guess its no use venting to you guys, you all must have gotten the memo already..  2 ticket limit has always meant you can only buy two a time to me.

ah, now that's a different complaint - poor customer service/communication.  yeah, tickets.com aren't the best at that.

I guess its no use venting to you guys, you all must have gotten the memo already..  2 ticket limit has always meant you can only buy two a time to me.

what it means to you is irrelevant, it's what it means legally that matters.  when a presale says there is a X ticket limit, that's X tickets total, no matter how many orders you take to achieve the limit.  this has always been the case, i've never seen a presale with an limit-per-order but no number-of-orders limit.

and venting to us is always useful - gives us cannon fodder.

yes, walkies, that's right - scalpers and brokers have a secret back door to tickets.com that gives them access to tickets that the rest of us don't.  this is keeping with the 930's long-standing tradition of cooperating with scalpers.  those tickets for sale on ebay and stubhub aren't just regular folks who bought tickets the same way you and i did... no, definitely not.  these people have super-powers  ::)

I just saw this band in Austin and it was amazing.  If you love Josh Homme, this band is a very, very good thing.  I have never been so entertained by a show by a band where I did not know any of their music going into it.  This at the club is just going to destroy.  Again, if you are a Homme fan, this band is absolute bliss.

I had this problem with Ticketmaster as well for Vfest, and they didn't contact me before hand to notify me that my ticket had been canceled. I mean, they even sent me a confirmation email for my order. Apparently it's in their "rules" that they don't do that. I called TM to complain about the incident, and they said "oh thats all listed in our terms and services, and the email it sent you is automatically sent whenever a ticket is purchased".

Shitty customer service, IMO. I am ok with an order being canceled, but not notifying me about it is a shady practice.
Very frustrating indeed.

And I haven't really read any negative reviews of the fact that he's in the band.

I think this band is going to be a bit of a letdown for anyone who is NOT a fan of Queens of the Stone Age or Kyuss. If you're into Queens or just enjoy music for the sake of music, it's kind of like seeing Josh Homme go supersonic. How could he not be overshadowed by members of 2 of the all-time biggest bands in rock music?  But I get the sense that the songs are mostly his, the melodies are mostly his, it's just that he has one incredibly badass and damaging rhythm section. I'm totally OK with that. This isn't the Traveling Wilburys. I'm sure Grohl will have a lot of people show up just because it's him, and JPJ will have some onlookers too. I'll be there for ALL of the band, including Alain Johannes, who is an amazing musician and producer. But I suspect I'm probably in the minority on that one.

TCV were pretty impressive at ACL. I'd say y'all are in for a treat

Agreed.  I was not expecting much, but they were pretty awesome.  But I like QOTSA, so I also agree with bearman that if you do not like QOTSA, you probably won't like TCV.  If you do, you're going to love them.

I think this band is going to be a bit of a letdown for anyone who is NOT a fan of Queens of the Stone Age or Kyuss.

Maybe....but those people have issues to begin with.  Particularly those that don't like Kyuss.

is anybody on the sense yet of whether this live experience / band altogether, is going to be epic . . . or rather "yeah, well seeing dave on drums again, was kinda cool . . .  but they should of got ______ to sing"??

I and everyone I was with freaking loved it in Austin, though we are all huge QOTSA/Josh Homme fans.  It sounds like Josh out playing great new QOTSA material with an incredibly sick QOTSA lineup behind him.  Grohl is powerful and right on, but very understated.  He does not make a show of himself, he just pounds the hell out of the drums.  John Paul Jones just takes the whole thing over the top.  There is also a second guitarist.

I do think people not sold on Josh Homme might be let down, but if you have drank the Homme kool-aid, bring an extra pair of shorts to the gig with you.

well except for the fact that he employs one guy whose entire job seems to be to move the mic for him throughout the show.  he just sits there behind the drums and swings the mic in and out.  I consider that pretty showy ;)

I just got back from Austin, saw 'em twice.  I don't consider myself the biggest QOTSA fan, but I did enjoy seeing Dave play drums for them at the club in 2002, and this feels different.  One of their songs feels like a slowed down and spacier "Trampled Underfoot", and I really enjoyed it.  Also, when JPJ plays the keys it brings the sound to a new place.  Looking forward to the 14th.

"mini mansions" opening for TCV.  based on their 4 myspace tracks (http://www.myspace.com/minimansionsmusic) they seem to be on the 60's psychedelic tip, with a strong beatles influence.  should make for an interesting/acceptable opener.

edit: apparently i'm not the only one who hears a beatles influence: http://losangeles.ohmyrockness.com/BandBio.cfm?BandID=25780

I'm pretty sure I've seen shows on rapidshare & megaupload.  Don't have the links here at work, though. Not sure what format they're in, either.

Also, looks like I have an extra tix.  First boardie to PM me can have it at cost, with the caveat being you can pick it up from me tonight or tomorrow in the boonies (Herndon) or wait 'til I arrive, probably no earlier than 8:30.

I'm pretty psyched.  Going to the show with some neighbors who I've never hung out with at the club.  I think they'll be gettign there for doors, which I haven't done in like forever.

I'll be the older guy, long hair, glasses, and walking with a cane.  Should be near the front of the line to go in.  Heading directly upstairs to the bar stools at my usual club spot.

I'm still considering wearing Dave's Motorhead shirt that he gave me.  I did give it to KIm so I might have to sweet talk her to get it back for the show.

in case anyone is without a ticket, there are several available in the ticket exchange (http://www.930.com/forum/index.php?board=4.0)

i can't guarantee a pre-show meet-up, but i might be in the backbar afterward.  sounds like some folks will be at Duffy's beforehand.

I hear they've had cool posters at other gigs, not sure if there will be one here or not.  I'm guessing the posters will go early and I'll miss out and have to outbid people on ebay for one.  Wish there was a 1 poster limit like the ticket limit for the tickets.

this recording is quite clear, but there's something really effed up about the stereo image... it's like it was recorded mid/side and hasn't been decoded or something.  left side is louder than the right and mix is way off... i can't deal with it.  i came across another recording that isn't as clear but sounds "normal".

edit: the left/right weirdness subsides as the show goes on.  maybe the taper fixed the placement of his mic(s)...
