What do people think of them as a live band?

I saw them on the "Live Through This" tour and thought they were pretty average.  Courtney tried to give the performance a sense of danger and unpredictability with her theatrics, but it came off as forced and not genuine.

Other than that, they just played their songs and didn't really add much to them in a live setting over what you hear on the record.

Given my previous experience and the $45 price, I'm going to pass.

Now that Courtney is part of the Hollywood elite, she thinks she's worth it and can get it... and probably will. That's not at all to say that she's worth it.

For some reason, I kind of get the impression that she's settled down a bit. Mind you, that's 'settled down' on the Courtney scale so she's probably still somewhat of a train wreck.

Would bet that the show will be full of canned theatrics. Not on a Flaming Lips level but more like formula Punk stunts and minor banter.

In the end, I'd bet all image with very little substance. Then again, the band have had a lot of time to hone their skills so maybe they will be a nice surprise.

I was at that Hole show at WUST (ex 930 building). Madder Rose opened.

I thought it was great except for using her and Kurt's daughter as a prop.

Obviously current Hole is not the same band.. they are just hired hands...I wouldn't even call them a band. But back in 94 Hole was a band that had been playing for a while and in many ways they were excellent.

Of course Courtney turned into a joke or her wackiness began to color the way people viewed Hole.. viewed through that prism its very vogue to trash her but at the time she was touring behind an excellent album (I'm convinced Kurt wrote a lot of it) and the band initially was solid..

I wouldn't pay to see her today. But back in 1994 everything about Hole - heck even the b-sides were really cool (Covering Echo and the Bunnymen's "Do it Clean"! who else was doing that?)...

So what you are saying is that you don't think Courtney Love's hole will be as tight a unit as back in '94? You think Courtney Love's hole will be all loose and sloppy?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

That's my one 12 year-old comment in this thread.

(I'm convinced Kurt wrote a lot of it)

You may very well be right which would, in part, explain why we haven't heard anything since.

Az, all I can do is shake my head and laugh.  ::) ;D ::)

...and didn't Corgan allegedly write the follow-up?  Hole was always pretty much a cover band as far as I can tell.  And not a particularly good one.

If you actually thought up that comment in 1988, it would have predated 1994. Methinks it's more recently derived.

I'm there! I've never seen the original Hole live before but I've always liked their music.
If you check out youtube, you can see recent videos of her concerts. She's not a train wreck or doing anything that crazy. She's been just playing the songs. Her new band seems very professional and tight.

Courtney has been the victim of a lot of sexism. Everyone says Kurt and Billy wrote all her songs, like a woman couldn't possibly do anything good. Billy Corgan did co-write songs on Celebrity Skin, but Courtney made her contribution too.

I hope everyone puts aside their preconceptions and gives Courtney a chance. If you don't believe me, check out the recent videos on youtube for yourself.

I meant that a 12 year-old would make that comment; not that the comment is 12 years old. And if the comment was 12 years old, it would've been made in 98, not 88.

Fiona: chill. We're not talking about ALL women. We're talking about A woman.

No, I won't chill. The whole tone of this thread is sexist and misogynist. All the sexual innuendo about her Hole being tight. It's funny women are respected in dance & R&B, but in rock they are not. I love rock, but I have been so disrespected at rock shows by tons of male rockers. Sick of it and won't take it any more and I won't be told to chill by you sexist pigs.
To argue, Courtney has nothing to do with her music is what is ridiculous. Yes, she co-writes with men like Billy Corgan, but that doesn't mean she didn't have anything to do with the songs. When men co-write, they are given respect for their contributions when women do they are not. Most rock songs are co-written in bands. Why are men allowed to do that but women are not?

The whole tone of this thread is sexist and misogynist.

I'd just like to clear up that my comments have nothing to do with her being female and everything to do with her being a no-talent hack.  You're welcome to misinterpret that as misogyny if you like.

so, to recap:

one group of people in this thread discussed courtney's career & her song-writing abilities or supposed lack thereof.

another group were making childish word-plays, a la beavis and butthead.

along comes fiona who takes an overly wide view, confounds the two and proceeds to go on a first-year-wymens-studies rant.

boardees proceed to antagonize her because, well, it's fun, easy and brings the lulz (julian and ggw, you crack me up).

and people wonder why this board will never die.

One way to get passed the filters and not have to change it visibly:

turn numlock on
hold down alt and hit 0173 on the numpad between any two letters in "fuck"
Release "alt."

Voila!

"fuck" with an invisible character in it.

Cool. But then again, he also has to get past the Mods. Would bet that at least one of them (no one in particular in mind) would have his ass for that. The obvious blurring is probably his safest bet. Save the coding for within the threads. Just my $.02.

I think it's used in HTML when a word might need to be divided over two lines? And when that division isn't necessary, it stays hidden.

Something like that.

I agree with Fiona, this board is filled with sexist pigs. I agree with Vansmack. There are men who will pretend to NOT be sexist pigs because they are that desperate to get laid. A good woman is one who to some degree tolerates our inate male piggy idiosyncracies, and a good man is one who tolerates the inateness of female bitchiness.

Regardless of all of that, can't we just leave the musical suckage that was the 90's behind? And I'm  a 42 year old white male saying that.

The 90's was the last gasp of Rock N' Roll - I could go on and on about all the truly great bands who broke through to the mainstream...  PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Hole, Belly, Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, Foo Fighters, Suede, Pulp, Blur, Oasis, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Beck, Bikini Kill, Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate, Afghan Whigs, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, etc.  I could go on and on and on.  The 90's were fucking AWESOME!
Courtney Love is a great front-woman who is sure to put on a memorable show regardless of who is in the band / how the show is booked (Courtney Love vs. Hole).  I only liked their first two albums but you have to give her credit for keeping music exciting!

I pretty much hate every band/artist you list.  And pretty much did back in the 90's, so it's not like I'm trying to be hip or something.  And I do like alot of what came before and after the 90's. It's was just a time of self-absorbed angsty lyrics, grunting like they're taking a shit vocals, and loud out of tune music.

Of those you list, I do like one Janes Addiction album. But it came out in 1988.

2.9

I agree with Fiona, this board is filled with sexist pigs. I agree with Vansmack. There are men who will pretend to NOT be sexist pigs because they are that desperate to get laid. A good woman is one who to some degree tolerates our inate male piggy idiosyncracies, and a good man is one who tolerates the inateness of female bitchiness.

Regardless of all of that, can't we just leave the musical suckage that was the 90's behind? And I'm  a 42 year old white male saying that.

Note sure what you mean. I actually didn't even pay attention to music until I was in college in the late 80's. Alt-country was about the only good thing going in the 90's. Loved the indie rock heyday of the early 2000's as well.

Well, you ARE 42 - Your tastes have been corrupted by growing up in the time you did!

From the review: ..."despite her public meltdowns, Love remains preoccupied with posture and pose..."

More like the meltdowns are part of the posture and pose.

And being 42 hardly means your taste in music is awful/corrupted.  I'm part of that 35-44 demographic myself and I love just about every band on that list.  To each their own.

Just a thought, but why not spend that $55 to see five to say eight shows with hungry up and coming rock bands, surely there are some out there that don't want to be the next Nickleback or Passion Pit and just want to RAWK!

$55 is a lot of money for a washed-up attention seeker who is now writing songs with Linda Perry.

Again, Courtney is a commanding and infamous front-woman pariah - $45 was the most I'd pay to see her in a club.  If this show was anywhere else (bigger venue) I wouldn't have bothered.

I bet the new album scores less than a 50 on metacritic.

because most people would rather rehash something they thought was cool 20 years ago, than be confronted with the unfamiliar.

That list Rusty Organ posted was a depressing compendium of the era when mainstream got retagged "alternative."   There are some good bands in there, but even back then so much of that was unimaginative dreck... and at this point it's today's Classic Rock...

In Courtney's defense, that sounds about par for the course for Billy. He's been a whiny little cunt for years now (to avoid being called a sexist again, I'm using the term the way the Brits use it which gives it a more unisex connotation).

I'm surprised she isn't throwing in a track or two from her first solo album. Believe it or not, there were a couple not-bad songs on there. "But Julian I'm a Little Older Than You" was actually pretty good, though I guess her advancing age isn't really a spot she's looking to highlight.

NYC Night 2:

Pretty on the Inside
Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones cover)
Skinny Little Bitch
Miss World
Violet
Letter to God
Nobody's Daughter
Pacific Coast Highway
Gold Dust Woman (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Someone Else's Bed
Celebrity Skin
Malibu
Samantha

Play With Fire (Rolling Stones cover)
Doll Parts
Thirteen (Big Star cover) (acoustic)
Northern Star (acoustic)
Never Go Hungry (acoustic)

--

I went to the Hole show at SxSW and it WAS pretty amazing. I didn't expect to hear "Pretty on the Inside" and "Reasons to Be Beautiful", but there they were, and DAMN they're good songs still. Her new band isn't exactly the problem...

That first show at T5 was an embarrassing 50 minute set (INCLUDING the encore), that I would've been pissed to pay $40 face value for. The second show was exponentially better, but damn, I dunno...something's way off. Show was great the 2nd night...I'd go to the DC show if they played more of Live Through This. (Plump? Asking for It? I Think I Would Die?)

Awful
Thirteen (Big Star cover, also, wow, seriously?)
Never Go Hungry
Northern Star

Okay, so...as a Hole fan who sat through the two 45-minute shows she did in April at Terminal 5 in New York, I've still gotta say that I would be pissed if I had missed this show. This is the first setlist in a long time that has a SHIT ton of rare shit on it. I can't think of a show she's played in a long time where she's played 7 songs from Live Through This, in addition to a bunch of the (actually really good) demo tracks that were floating around in 2002-2006, like Sunset Marquis and Car Crash. Neither one of those songs have been played live before, as far as I know.

But god...damn...Courtney. She slurred, forgot lyrics, went on mildly racist-tirades, outed George Clooney and the guy from Faith No More?, berated her OWN bassist in front of the audience and the band, berated the fans, and generally made EVERYONE in the room, her band included, feel incredibly uncomfortable throughout the majority of the LONG-ASS, IS THIS REALLY GOING ON MORE THAN TWO AND A HALF HOURS YEP I GUESS IT IS show that we got. She played a "new song" she was working on, "Pretty Your Whole Life" twice. Once acoustically, and once with the band. Both times were incredibly incoherent and pretty cringe-worthy. It's probably a decent song, but god damn...I mean, there were several moments where everyone standing around me were left incredibly embarrassed for what was happening in front of us. When she walked onstage and introduced us to her "videographer" (her friend with an iPhone) and said "Fuck everyone else, she's going to block your view because I need her to take this video of me", I think we all knew it was one of *those* shows. She told fans to stop complaining that they couldn't see her during Plump, and was dead ass serious about it. All of this, after showing up over an hour late to people who paid good money to see her perform. I guess she made up for it with the random / rare songs and the long setlist, but really?

Gotta say, it was super fun hearing people yell out what they thought her "worst" song was, per her request. She claims it's "Born Bad", her never-heard collaboration with Lil' Kim for the Any Given Sunday soundtrack. Instead, they used her (also-bad) song "Be a Man" for the soundtrack, which...also, just no. She was actually way off with that, though. Her worst song ever had been performed earlier in the night: "Letter to God". Embarrassing.

Also, what the fuck was that incredibly horrible Nine Inch Nails cover? My friend said it felt like a scene from "Blue Velvet", or another completely fucked out of your head David Lynch movie.

What'd everybody else think?

I still can't believe how bad last night's show was.  I figured there might be drama, but the level of epic, soul-crushing ineptitude on display was alarming.  I s'pose the fact various unreleased demos were "played" live for the first time is cool for Hole obsessives, but the fact they were sung by a woman who seemed on the verge of forgetting her own name and which planet she was on, let alone -lyrics-, surely must've lessened the fun.

I wasn't at this show, but was wondering if it was full of canned theatrics?

Courtney has been the victim of a lot of sexism.
