Title: Meanwhile, in Canada...
Post by: sweetcell on March 08, 2018, 08:03:12 pm
Hundreds of doctors in Canada are protesting. They say they make too much (https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/08/health/canada-doctor-raises-trnd/index.html)

700 physicians, general practitioners, specialists, residents and medical students in Quebec signed a petition.

Quebec alone has 10,000 doctors.

Overstate much?

The funny thing is there should be no Canada...if George Washington had been a half decent strategist we would have taken it over at the very beginning of the War for Independence...but it probably - I suppose - could be argued Canada has been a blessing...it’s mellow reasoned existence a nice counterweight to the US...Canada is to the US as Uruguay is to Argentina...an arguably fortunate historical accident

pffff... this is a thinly-veiled variation of anne coulter's "canada should be happy that the US lets it exist"...

by the same token, the US is lucky that the british (future canandians) let the US continue to be, given the complete and thorough sacking  they put on Washington DC.  had they continued their campaign instead of retreating once their point was made, they would have caused the US to collapse.

so maybe we should just call it even ;D

Even then, what does hockey *really* have to do with Canada. Most NHL teams are in the USA, and most Olympic hockey teams aren't in Canada.

same line of thinking: what does baseball *really* have to do with the US?  Most professional baseball teams aren't in the US.

and most Olympic hockey teams aren't in Canada.

i want you to re-read that very carefully, then think about it.

Is that really Canada?

First off, not a mountie.

Second, why would a Canadian cop be wearing a bulletproof vest with all the wonderful Canadian gun policies you tout?

Smackie calls BS.  I immediately call for you to extend your visit to SF so that we can see the new Super Troopers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEed-o8fVpM) together.

First off, not a mountie.

correct, looks like an OPP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Provincial_Police) officer.  mounties are national, and in many remote locations (AKA most of the country) the only police force, but there are provincial and municipal police forces as well.

Second, why would a Canadian cop be wearing a bulletproof vest with all the wonderful Canadian gun policies you tout?

for protection from stray americans.

i would LOVE to, but i'd need to extend my visit by 3 or 4 days... movie opens on 4/20.

Wait, Canadians aren't down with OPP?  So much so that they need officers?  That's not very friendly...

for protection from stray americans.

I see - Canadians think every American is a gun-toting jack-ass, much the way 45 thinks every Mexican is a raping murderer.  That's not better.

i would LOVE to, but i'd need to extend my visit by 3 or 4 days... movie opens on 4/20.

Oh, I'm well aware and I've already worked it out with the Mrs., who BTW, absolutely LOATHES Super Troopers with a passion like it was a bad date with an ex-boyfriend, because it was. And he was a Trooper. Great story, be sure to ask her!

Meanwhile, in Edmonton.....

Two missing ceiling tiles and a slightly bent metal shelf are the only signs left behind after an eventful arrest at a Spruce Grove convenience store two days ago.

I'm quite certain the police officers were saying "sorry, sorry" the entire time....

This is funny for a lot of reasons
but the line : Music too Canadian
as a reason for calling a lawyer is just about the funniest thing I've heard all week
(https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/44387232_2000817783298129_8018415199570624512_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&oh=422efc768f1c55e3f313f3663fb1638b&oe=5C4984A5)

although this line is pretty good too:
The lawyer opens a briefcase. It's full of lemons, the justice fruit only lawyers may touch

*sigh*...

SNC-Lavalin is a big construction contractor.  they had contracts in libya, 2001-2011, that were supposedly won based on bribes they gave to libyan officials (including Qaddafi).  SNC has been under investigation for those bribes.  the government could either go big and prosecute in criminal court, possibly bankrupting the company; or pursue a negotiated settlement - which is what SNC wanted, given that it's faster, cheaper, and no one goes to jail.  the attorney general rejected the request for negotiations and started a criminal investigation.

the scandal is that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) tried to intervene.  they tried to influence/pressure the AG and get her to go with a negotiated settlement.  just like in the US, the AG is supposed to be independent.  if the president or PM puts pressure on the AG = obstruction of justice.  SNC is based in Montreal, where Trudeau's home riding (district) is, so part of the message was "don't kill SNC because it's bad for my future election prospects".   apparently SNC did a ton of lobbying immediately after Trudeau was elected... and the law that allows the government to negotiate instead of investigate was enacted by the Trudeau government, leading some to say that it was created specifically to protect SNC.  lately, a bunch of ministers have been resigning to distance themselves from this developing scandal.  with each resignation, it's looking worse and worse for JT.

my un-hot take: JT done effed up.  it was illegal.  that being said, he is being held to an unfairly high standard.  if you look at the previous government (Harper), this SNC scandal is a drop in the bucket (https://www.thestar.com/news/federal-election/2015/08/14/a-conservative-collection-of-harper-government-scandals.html).  but because JT rode in on a high horse but didn't stick the landing 100%, he's now being dragged through the mud.  might cost him the upcoming election.  so for one (very bad) infraction, JT might be kicked out and replaced with something much worse - but that worse replacement isn't held to the same standards, so the bad shit they'll do will be swept under the rug just like with Harper.

analogy: after 4 horrible years of trump, someone like O'Rourke is elected.  he starts to right the ship, but after 3 years it is discovered that he tried to influence his AG in an illegal way.  despite it being his first scandal (vs. Trump's dozens of scandals over the same period), because he sold himself as righteous he gets crucified.  in retaliation, the voting public elects another trump in the next election... and will ignore that despot's dozens of scandals.  how enlightened.

I used to work for a company that was based in Toronto and about 15 years ago, I traveled up there for an on-site all staff meeting. All of a sudden, I was surrounded by Canadians that were my age and demographic. And every time I heard one of them earnestly say 'eh?' I was just so tickled. Yeah, it wasn't constant or ubiquitous, but it was like seeing an Australian say "dollaradoos" or a Brit saying "Cor blimey!" or an American shooting up a school.

the north pole is in canada.
last I checked
the North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean amid waters that are almost permanently covered with constantly shifting sea ice.

also
Currently, under international law, no country owns the North Pole or the region of the Arctic Ocean surrounding it.

just like any other country in the world, there are canadian rappers. unfortunately the two that you would recognize used to rap a lot more, nowadays they tend to sing more: Drake and The Weeknd.  i doubt that names like the Dream Warriors, K-os, Abdominal, Rascalz, etc. would mean much to you (understandably).

oh - Tom Green was in a rap group, Organized Rhyme, way back in the day ;D

dang, you really are canadian!

i haven't read or heard anything about banning alcohol sales.  generally, it's a bad idea.  for the serious alcoholic, going cold turkey can have disastrous results that require hospitalization - something we're desperately trying to avoid.  i've read this argument many times now: liquor stores have to stay open, to keep alcoholics out of the ER.

It wouldn’t solve everything as the divide is also within states....between rural and urban areas.... I guess you would water down the Republicans but depending on what system of government the United States of Canada had they could still make trouble...You would still have local Trumpist governments everywhere

I guess it’s fun to think about but it doesn’t bear much scrutiny... I mean the Trump virus has taken substantial root in even much of what would form the US of Canada... I mean look at places like Pennsylvania

The defining characteristic of modern America seems to be an incredibly large number of assholes everywhere you look... it’s very worrisome

You can’t really do much to fix things when 40% of Americans are resentful bitter racist pricks who don’t like facts or reason and just want to kick the ass of the rest of Americans...How do you fix that? It’s really not about issues but about fact 40% of Americans are assholes who feel reflected in and represented by an asshole President even if they know he is often lying to and conning them

Yes, much easier for HI to implement than Canada, given geography.

I did read that Canada has purchased 5 vaccines per resident though, so it might be worth a test and trip to just to get the jab(s).

it's a little over 2 hours to the border from my place.  yes, i still have citizenship - need to go dual this year.  borders are still closed to non-essential travel.  as a canadian i might be able to make an argument to be let in to canuckistan, but i'd have problems trying to get back in to the US.  i'd rather not be stuck away from my family for as long as the pandemic is still raging.

canuckistania, being under a repressive anarcho-socialist-communist regime, has its people brain-washed to the point that they adhere to lock-downs.

in quebec, you can be fined for being outside your house between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. from January 9 to February 8.  quebeckers out and aboot between those hours can be fined between $1,000 to $6,000.

ontario's current lock-down has a lot of rules.  the prime minister (equivalent to governor) of ontario, doug ford - yes, brother of rob - recorded a PSA in several languages (https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/doug-ford-releases-video-urging-people-to-stay-home-in-22-languages-1.5276384).  A+ for effort, D- for execution.

Seems like the citizens of Ontario who made Doug Ford a prime minister have about as much sense as the people who made Charles Flynn a four star general.

There is a lot of evidence (and writings) that Trump’s America is a product of the assholeization of America

Just driving around and observing, for example, I don’t remember this aggressiveness and assholery on the roads being as pronounced twenty years ago..

What is your evidence for saying it was always thus?

yeah, PET (https://www.everythingzoomer.com/lifestyle/style-beauty-grooming/2015/10/22/pierre-trudeau-a-look-back/) was the bomb back in the 60's and 70's.  his popularity (which i imagine was only aided by his fashion stylings) gave rise to "trudeaumania (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trudeaumania)": he was literally chased by young folks (mostly women) like the beatles.  he was a swinger*.  his wife, margaret, partied at studio 54 where she... partied (https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/features/a14456/margaret-trudeau-0416/) - while her husband was PM.

I can’t blame anybody for anything they do with respect to the US after the four years Trump shat on the world.

Also what we saw from the US during the past 18 months with respect to covid was downright scary. I can’t blame anybody for being wary.

We haven’t even been a half decent global citizen or neighbor.

I expect Biden at some point to make a trip to Canada to smooth some ruffled feathers.

They pick their spots… trust me they are very wary of anything America and they know full well Trump could return at any moment.

I have read the US still doesn’t currently allow people in from the UK. Even when the UK had like a handful of people dying from covid and was in way better shape than the US. There are plenty of limits on travel and it’s going to take a while for them to come down.

But the US and Americans should really tone down their complaints after what they put the world through the past four years. Show a little humility. Trump insulted world leaders for years as your leader. Try to keep the ugly American in the closet.

I've never understand the appeal of duty free. It always seems like piles of overpriced garbage. Maybe I'm not the target audience.

I'm currently debating vacation destinations for Summer 2022. It's hard to plan that far ahead in a pandemic world.

I agree that Quebec City is a cool place to visit, for people without enough money to go to France. Though it's not currently under consideration.

100%. Duty Free is a huge ripoff. Used to be decent, I remember buying smokes for dirt cheap in Windsor 20 years ago. What really sucks is that they make you pay in USD or Euros, which is not only lame when you've got local currency to get rid of, but everything is just as expensive as they would be in the US or Europe, even in lower cost nations like in South America. Just stupid all around.

Duty Free is a huge ripoff. Used to be decent, I remember buying smokes for dirt cheap in Windsor 20 years ago.

this.  20 years ago i would save a chunk of change on cognac and smokes.  then i guess the duty free folks figured out that they have a captive audience who believes duty free was full of deals - so why not raise prices and increase margins?

duty free shopping in South Korea is no joke though... it's essential mall sized at the major airport and the amount of stuff buy is eye opening... electronics, booze, etc, etc...  saw people with bags and bags of duty free purchases.. they must have a serious VAT or something over there, people are avoiding

Canada keeps it's borders closed to vaccinated Americans for at least another month. I love this guy's take.

"There's no other way to say it: another month's delay is bullshit," Rep. Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.), co-chair of the Congressional Northern Border Caucus, wrote Friday on Twitter.

Why Can’t Americans Go to Canada? (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/29/travel/us-canada-travel-ban.html)
Many travelers are wondering why they still can’t visit their neighbor to the north. Here’s why the border remains closed.

Looking like July 21 might be the big date.

I'm only loosely following this story because we're possibly going to Canada in Summer 2022. I'm sure they'll be open by then. Or open and closed again....

border restrictions are slowly easing back for "essential" travellers, but still no tourism:

Canada eases travel restrictions at U.S. border after 16 months (https://www.wfmz.com/news/us/canada-eases-travel-restrictions-at-u-s-border-after-16-months/article_e9db57d4-dda2-11eb-9d20-33e2dbea6537.html)

all eyes still on july 21, when hopes are high that the border will be reopened for the fully vaxxed.

if you do decide to travel to Canada, you might want to avoid Ontario: their premier (AKA governor), Doug Ford (brother of former mayor of Toronto & noted crackhead Rob Ford) says that he won't be making vaccination for healthcare workers mandatory (https://globalnews.ca/news/8031039/covid-vaccines-not-mandatory-ontario-health-care-workers/) - even though healthcare workers want it to be mandatory (https://globalnews.ca/news/8034457/ontario-health-worker-mandatory-covid-shots/).  fucking "constitutional conservatives"...

confirmed: Canada to open border to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens on Aug. 9 (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/07/19/canada-us-border-open/)

"To be eligible for entry, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents must present a negative covid-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours of flight departure or arrival at a land crossing. They will also be required to upload proof that they have received a full series of an authorized coronavirus vaccine at least 14 days before departure to a Canadian government app.
(...)
The United States has not said whether it will allow Canadians to enter across the land border for nonessential travel."

Proof of vaccine AND a negative test are why Canada may never win another Stanley Cup - they just don't understand how things work.

US limits non-essential travel to Canada and Mexico through August 21 (https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/21/politics/us-canada-mexico-travel/index.html) - this is somehow better?  at least americans have a way to get in, as awkward as it may be.
