i hate to take something i made up on a whim for a rick roll to its logical conclusions, and i'm sure mankie could give us a proper lesson if he wasn't at spin class, but morrissey was heavily involved in the manchester music scene in the late 70s, played with some random bands then and up to the founding of the smiths in 1982 ... john lennon died on december 8, 1980
not that they had any reason to cross paths, but their landmark collaboration on a rough demo of a little tune i like to call "never gonna give you up" doesn't exactly defy the laws of space and time

you might remember recently in the Just Announced thread a bunch of us were going on and on about Shpongle, whose core members are Raja Ram and Simon Posford. the 2 central members of Younger Brother are Benji Vaughan (aka Prometheus)... and Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen). the first two YB records were written and recorded by benji and simon only, and are HIGHLY recommended (on Twisted Records, http://www.twistedmusic.com/). a little more on the electronic tip, but still very blissful and trippy. this live band incarnation of YB is a relatively new thing. the third album is currently being recorded with the full band, due out later this year.
i WAS going to say "good luck!" to your "hey seth" - YB have only played the US a few times, mostly at camp bisco and maybe a show or two in SF. however, i just got this in my inbox:

If you want to get an idea, check out the finale of "Transatlanticism" with the LA Philharmonic...and fireworks. Unfuckingreal. Even the hardest cynic would probably admit this was some of the most epic shit they'd ever seen. But you still had to be there to truly appreciate the magnitude of the event. Enjoy.

f*ck f*ck f*ck. a friend had a garden box seat for me, i almost got on a plane for this show... i knew it would be epic. the hipsters can hate on death cab all they want - they have some great songs and put on a solid live show. throw in the philharmonic, fireworks and the band knowing this was a one-time performance, and i have no doubt that was a night to remember. wish i could have been there. thanks for posting the link. hopefully they'll release a recording and/or video of this show (will have to hit up dime and the other usual spots to see if anyone got a good bootleg).

Well, I saw them at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on Friday night, that show was (dare I say) even better. It was ridiculously intimate, and they were so well-rehearsed and amped up for the Hollywood Bowl gig. Both were amazing, just different, but seeing them in front of 600 people was like seeing a rehearsal, but seeing them in front of 18,000 people was great too. There are some more Youtube links popping up. I had a garden box and have to say that it was pretty friggin' fantastic. Sorry to say, but WELL worth the trip Sweetcell. Not sure if you've ever seen a show like that at the Bowl, but it's one of the best-kept secrets if it's a strong bill. Tegan and Sara and the New Pornographers opened. I was shocked that the NP's went on first and only got a half hour. They kind of got robbed in my opinion. T&S were scared shitless to play in front of that many people.

i had the extreme privilege of seeing radiohead there twice - amazing shows, but no fireworks. on the second night during "house of cards", a song i'm only so-so on, i went all the way to the back of the bowl and slowly walked up, taking it all in... what a view. what a great venue.

Radiohead there would be awesome!! Glad that you have at least seen some shows there...yeah, it was probably ill-timed. I guarantee it won't be the last time they play there though. It was pretty surreal to see tears streaming down people's faces during those fireworks though. I can't think of too many bands that can evoke that kind of emotion from people. You could see that the band knew it was their moment...they were grateful for that kind of reception and opportunity. It was cool that they didn't take it for granted. Tegan and Sara had a tough time though!

I think it was legit. Debut nerves and the quick succession of f(aux)-words made a slip-up inevitable. Slate's reaction seemed genuine; someone else noticed Wiig's eyes bulged but who can really tell with her. At the show's end, Slate was being embraced by Myers; the body language was sympathetic and comforting. As for press, SNL doesn't really need it that badly. It's been riding high so the press was already there.

The downside to the First Amendment

RADIO audiences in Kansas City and Springfield, Missouri, are used to being harangued by political commercials even this early in the electoral season. But nearly everyone has been shocked to hear the ads of Glenn Miller, a write-in candidate to replace the retiring Kit Bond in the Senate. Mr Miller?s ads are overtly anti-Semitic and racist tirades, complaining that ?Jews control the media? and attacking whites for ?watching the coons play ball? instead of fighting for their rights.
Even more shocking than the ads themselves is the fact that under federal law, radio stations are powerless to refuse to run the commercials or censor them in any way. Mr Miller?s status as a candidate, no matter how ridiculous, puts the ads under the protection of political speech, the highest level of the First Amendment.
Mr Miller was a master-sergeant in the army and a self-described redneck when he joined his first white racist group in 1974. He formed his own offshoot of the Ku Klux Klan which he later renamed the White Patriot Party because, as he later wrote, the Klan carried too many negative connotations. In 1984 he ran in the North Carolina Democratic primary for governor, taking great delight in provoking outrage while gaining publicity for his movement. He served three years in federal prison for declaring a paramilitary race war and for illegal possession of weapons. In a previous run for Congress he won a grand total of 23 votes.
Winning office is not, of course, the point for Mr Miller. His ads direct listeners to a website run by David Duke, a white supremacist and former Republican legislator. His campaign web page has little about his Senate race but a lot about various neo-Nazi, Confederate and other extremist causes. And because Mr Miller is registered as a write-in candidate his protected status will last beyond Missouri?s primaries in August, until the November election in what will be one of the most closely-watched races of the year. The Missouri Senate race is one of the few opportunities for Democrats to pick up a Republican seat, and is shaping up to be an epic battle between two of the state?s most powerful political dynasties.
One Kansas City station has begun airing disclaimers before Mr Miller?s ads explaining that its hands are tied. It may be that the price of free speech is to turn down the volume for 60 seconds.

the racoon is clearly domesticated, and if he eats like his owner it's no wonder he's that fat. where i grew up we had coons almost that fat, but it was cold there so they needed the insulation and the most exercise they got was waddling from their burrows to the neighbourhood's trash cans. damn buggers were completely unafraid of humans. a few times i had to kick them to get them to leave. they would become pretty nasty at that point.
i LOVE how the coon tries to tackle the dancer as if to say "stop it!"

totally off the subject . . . but once i was talking to a friend of mine at his bar, as i sat at his bar. we were talking about dogs for some reason, and i told the worst dog i ever owned was a coonhound because of the bark/howling. this black guy turned around so quick and had this look of wanting to kill me. "what did you just say?" i told him that i hated coonhounds. he had never heard of a coonhound, had no clue what one was and thought i was being a racist. funny. i told him that if i hear him order crackers with his soup, i was going to be all up in his shit.

unfortunately i didn't make it to this last tour, so can't help you.
however i saw NIN several times during their "goodbye" tour and i thought trent was awesome. lots of energy, but yeah, he's no longer a 21-year old drug addict... some of the rage has subsided. not disappeared... maybe "channeled".
no idea what his most recent "retirement" has done to his temperament. i haven't had a chance to watch that video yet.

A primer for the beleaguered punk singer
Fat Mike, you?re having a bad week. You?re in the soup and there?s no use pretending otherwise. But I?m here to help, brother. Take a deep breath, count to ten and sit down while Poppa Weasel shows you how it?s done.
As you may have heard, I had a little trouble along these lines about 3 1/2 years ago when I slugged a woman in one of our crowds who had been showering me with beer, spit and ice cubes (including one right above the old peeper!) all night. Then I got jumped by another lady and popped her one in the kidneys for good measure. Hey, she had like six inches on me; I thought she was a giant condor. Anyhoo, it ended up in living color all over YouTube and within about 90 seconds the mood on the Internet had turned ugly. This formerly beloved, adored, highly respected gentleman was suddenly public enemy number one!
You and I both know this sort of thing barely registered a blip on the radar in punk not so long ago, but times have changed, my friend. It?s a brave new world, and you and I are a couple of dinosaurs, lumbering around, knocking into shit and making a nuisance of ourselves. The kids are not pleased. But not to worry ? your PR expert Ben Weasel is here to save the day for you!
First, apologize. I know ? you?ve done it. Not good enough. You need to apologize again. And again. And again. You need to keep apologizing for the rest of your life. People who had nothing to do with the incident, who were thousands of miles away at the time, and who have no idea of the context (and couldn?t care less) sincerely believe you owe it to them.
Granted, in my case, I apologized once and then dropped it, but I?m Ben Weasel; people would think I was ill if I kept saying I was sorry. But you?re Fat Mike! You play the game! Heck, you own the team! If you take the ball and go home, the game is over! So you need to play by the rules. And rule number one is eat shit. Lots and lots of shit. And when you think you can?t take any more, stuff some more shit in your cake-hole and swallow, and do it with a big smile on your face.
Second: try to understand that this is never going to end. Ever. You?ll be up on stage at age 80 bragging about all the coke you just did and trying to convince your geriatric fans to vote for Chelsea Clinton and people will still be bringing up the Big Kick. The sooner you wrap your head around this fact, the sooner you can face reality and take action.
Now, if you were me, you could play the heel and use this situation to your advantage; I?m currently making more money and playing in front of larger crowds than ever before. But you suffer from the unfortunate affliction of wanting to be liked and respected by strangers. So you?d better start getting used to disappointment, because people will be throwing this in your face for the rest of your life. It?s not going away.
Next, you?re going to need to get used to the crazies. Not just the yappers and scolders, but the ones who talk about attacking or killing you and who threaten to post your home address on the Internet. Accept that people are going to wish cancer on your kids, claim that you beat your wife, and announce that they hope your children end up doing donkey porn. Trust me brother, I?ve been there. These are the kind of morally righteous men-of-the-people whose rage you?ve piqued, and they will not be ignored.
This may seem insane to you, but if somebody threatens your life on social media, don?t expect Facebook or Twitter to do anything about it except delete the post. You can?t take legal action unless you file a suit. The cops won?t do anything about it either. You?ll have to defend yourself.
I recommend the Mossberg Persuader. Hell of a shotgun. The great thing about the Persuader is it?s got a pistol grip. Easy as pie. Seriously, the guys from Teenage Bottle Rocket could operate it (if they had opposable thumbs). And it doesn?t matter if you can?t shoot. If you fire this fucking thing within about twenty yards of your target you?re going to obliterate it and everything around, behind and possibly underneath it. I?m pretty sure it even destroys things in other dimensions when fired. I know your politics mean you?re supposed to be against guns, but you can?t count on neutralizing every intruder by kicking him in the face. What if you?re in your bathrobe and slippers after having lurched out of bed at 2 pm? Besides, being a rich San Francisco liberal means never having to live by the rules you impose on everyone else, so do yourself a favor and pick up that Persuader.
And, as a backup, get yourself an English Bulldog. Unlike a pit bull, they won?t tear your kid?s face off when you pop out for a loaf of bread, but they will savagely attack an interloper. Our guy Weezy is a peach with our kids, but somebody looks at one of us cross-eyed and he will sink his teeth into flesh and bone with a fury and purpose unparalleled in the animal kingdom. And we had his nuts cut off. Imagine what he?d do with a full set! The mind reels.
So, you?ve groveled for a few days and fortified your bunker. Now it?s time to plead insanity ? or the modern version of it, anyway: enter rehab. Make sure to have your publicist spin it just right so everybody gets the message: that wasn?t Fat Mike backhanding a fan to the ground and then drop kicking him in the face when he was defenseless ? it was the drugs!
Now, I see you?ve already made some tentative moves in that direction, and that?s good, but not good enough. The idea that painkillers and a sore neck made you commit a felonious attack on a friendly stranger is a bit of a stretch. You need to prove you?re a walking disaster ? you need to do your 28 days. And let?s face it, considering that you?ve been reduced to a physical and mental wreck thanks to years of drug and alcohol abuse, it might not be such a bad idea anyway. And you could actually have a little fun! You?d be surprised how many of those 12-steppers have a sense of humor.
The goal here is to convince people that you weren?t in your right mind. Never mind that you?ve done plenty of this stuff before, from spitting on fans to throwing bottles at women?s heads from the stage. If it?s not documented on YouTube, it didn?t happen. You did, however, get caught on video viciously and brutally beating a fan for trying to hug you. Let?s be honest ? you?re lucky you?re not sitting in a jail cell right now. Your offer to buy him a beer was hopelessly lame. Come on. The mob isn?t going to be impressed with that, besides which, the guy?s lip is so swollen, torn and bruised from its encounter with the business end of your Doc Marten he won?t be drinking anything for a week.
By the way, you need to stop having your manager stick up for you on social media. It looks dogshit. When he berates some clown on your label for making a lame, feeble joke about this incident and then the guy frantically deletes his tweet, it does not reflect well on you. This is the time for your friends to stand up for you, not your employees. Being who you are, you attract a lot of barnacles and parasites. Take this opportunity to find out once and for all who?s really got your back and who?s just there for the free blow and the opportunity to do business with you. Your employees need to shut up and stay the course.
Now, I had the bad fortune of having a petty, vindictive jagoff for a label owner back during my trouble, and his employees ? and even the other bands on his label ? followed his lead when he threw me under the bus. He didn?t give a shit who I punched ? his problem with me was that his delicate ego had been bruised because somebody got in his ear and convinced him I?d written a mean song about him on the album I?d just released on his label. Paranoia is a hell of a drug. Like I wouldn?t have crowed and gloated till the cows came home if I?d pulled off something that brilliant! That would?ve been one of the great ?fuck you? moments in punk; I?d?ve milked every drop of publicity from it and I?m deeply offended by the idea that I?d deny having done it.
But that?s the disadvantage of putting yourself at the financial mercy of a silly, vain, spoiled rich kid. You used to be on Epitaph ? you get it. Those kinds of people always kick you when you?re down (hmm, maybe that was a bad choice of words?). But you ? you?re in the catbird seat, my friend! You hold the careers of your employees and the bands on your label in the palm of your hand! You?re like a chubbier, dimmer Caesar! You can ruin those smart-alecks if they don?t toe the line, and don?t think they don?t know it! So make sure each and every one of them keeps his mouth shut. Let ?em know they?ll never work in this town again if they cross you. Sure, they already know it, but it can?t hurt to underline and bold it for them. Then when the smoke clears, you can end radio silence and have your publicist set up a mea culpa tour for you straight out of rehab. You?ll be back serving your audience shots of liquor laced with your own urine in no time at all!
Finally, take some time off. Do your rehab and your apology tour, then take a break. People will have had more than enough Fat Mike by then, and if time doesn?t heal all wounds, it at least helps the scars fade a little. Get some rest and write.
Come to think of it, you were talking about writing a musical a few years ago. Whatever happened to that? This is the perfect time to pick that project back up. After my e-lynching, I hunkered down and wrote an opera about a sociopathic, egomaniacal musician and his merry band of sycophants, leeches and toadies. It?s called Baby Fat and we?re just about done recording the first act with Mike Kennerty of the All-American Rejects. Blag Dahlia from the Dwarves sings the title role; Kat Spazzy (from the great Australian band the Spazzys) sings the female lead, and I?m singing the role of the overgrown frat boy rock star, Tommy Swank. It also features, among others, Todd C. from Toys That Kill, Roger Lima from Less Than Jake and Line Dahlmann from the brilliant Dahlmanns. It?s been great fun and it helped me channel a lot of the nonsense of the past few years into something positive and productive. I?d be glad to give you a few pointers on writing a libretto (it?s tougher than it looks!) and when Screeching Weasel plays San Francisco and LA after the album comes out on Recess Records next June, we?d love for you to come out to the show; we?re hoping to raise the money to dedicate a section of our set to a mini-production of Baby Fat. I think you?ll get a kick (!) out of it.
And as I noted earlier, Screeching Weasel is playing bigger and better shows than ever. Take a little vacation out to Chicago to see us at the Concord Music Hall on November 22nd. We?re playing with the Queers, Flatfoot 56 and of course, the Dwarves. (Let?s just hope Blag doesn?t punch any ladies!)

Adams couldn't help taking a few shots at the Canadian rocker though, writing in the same post, "I seriously could give six shits about Bryan Adams or that song. In my opinion he is not a serious artist. His songs have 'implied target market audience' written all over them and in fact he is quite embarrassing in general. Also a piss poor photographer."

I'm not sure why you would dedicate this to me. Maybe because I live in Richmond which was the capital of the confederacy? I see no other reason that you would do so.
I did watch this earlier. His speech was charged with emotion, touching, and came close to making some valid points made. At the same time it was full of many holes. Race relations in this country will always suck as long as there are powerful people who can only keep their power by ensuring that these issues are not resolved. Those people do everything they can to divide society, disempower the very people they say they are fighting for, and keep those people thinking that they are week powerless victims who have no ability to better themselves.
BTW the guy who did this is a total dirt bag. Not so much because of the racial issues involved but more so because he committed an act of domestic terrorism and took people's lives. He is the same as the brothers who committed the Boston marathon bombing. I hope if and when he is found guilty, they don't waste much time at all strapping him down and giving him the IV.

Radiohead is really a band that hangs on how you feel about House of Cards. If you don't think that's a good record, then people have to acknowledge they haven't had a good record in 19 years which is an awful long time for a band as highly acclaimed.

wow, good watch.
i have very mixed feelings about these "reaction" videos. this one seems legit, but 99% of the genre is folks gushing incessantly over something they've never heard in order to harvest likes & subs. this genre of video seems made to pander to fans of the subject of the review: if you like jethro tull, then you'll love a video of someone gushing over JT. it provides validation - "yeah, i do have good taste in music - see? this person who has never heard my fav band before loves it too!" it's so easy, so patronizing... yet it feels good.
i have yet to come across a single reaction video where the reviewer/reactor trashes what they heard. makes sense, since there is less emotional attachment. would you bother watching a 12-minute video of someone trashing nickleback? of course not, you can do that on your own and having your hate validated isn't nearly as powerful as having your likes confirmed (unless you're a sith, obvs). the genre seems very formulaic: find a crowd you want to suck up to, identify their preferred musical genre, then record a butt-load of videos of you declaring that this music you've just heard for this first time has changed your life for forever. repeat and monetize.

overall i wasn't particularly impressed with primus' take on the rush classic. seemed a tad sloppy at times (vs. how locked in rush always was live), and the vocals... yeah, just doesn't fit. claypool doesn't have that great a singing voice and his vocals have always been more spoken/rap that sung, so the melodic stuff doesn't sound natural (i.e. good).
to be fair this was their first show so i'd expect their performance to improve, but i'm now feeling a tad less sad that i'll be missing their show here on saturday (was already not going due to delta).

I think it sounds - both songs- like prime late 70s early 80s ABBA…one is more the typical ballad..the other dancier
I think it’s remarkable and maybe the greatest comeback or let’s say return ever..I mean it has been almost 40 years and I believe the members are all nearing 80!! And in those forty years I don’t know that the four of them got together much at all. ABBA was done.
And it definitely sounds very much of a piece with their last two albums. If you are one of the many very casual US fans that knows them mainly for Dancing Queen or even Gold you aren’t going to be moved by this
But I think real ABBA fans … people for example that heard and loved their more mature albums for decades… people who liked the deep cuts too …will see this new music as an incredible gift (completely unexpected) and they will get goosebumps
Remember ABBA broke up in essence because it was composed of two marriages that went south. The band members are all zillionaires. It’s hard not to see this as a huge thank you to the fans. They don’t need ABBA as much as the world needs ABBA.
Remarkable.

posted last night and the first 20 minutes is a ty mini doc with the band and the producers talking about the recording of the album.. it was interesting to note that at the time of RATW, SFA was bucking the trend of stripped down bands like the the White Stripes
the mileage may vary on the the remaining part of this stream.. it's three guys from the Welsh Music Popcast carrying on about the album, which is was just ok.. and probably why i don't listen to music podcasts...
and the obligatory ABBA comment, as someone smarted then I pointed out this album was done on their terms.. i.e. no in demand producers on board, no co-writers and no guest appearances... also seeing many comments from producers types talking about the impact of their 70s records on future albums.

so on the youtube there a number of the Alvin and the Chipmunks albums New Wave albums slowed down to 16rpm.
so the results are somewhat awesome with kinda sludge metal/goth versions of the original tracks.. the downside is the songs double in length so mileage will vary

also in a similar vein, and i don't think it's been mentioned here before, is rick beato's "What Makes This Song Great" series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLW0NGgv1qnfzb1klL6Vw9B0aiM7ryfXV_). rick has been working in the music biz for some 40 years and the dude can play every instrument, so watching him break down a song into its parts is a treat. he consistently has the individual unmixed parts (stems) of the song being analyzed so he can solo just one instrument, just the vocals, etc. he must have some sick industry connections to get those... there are over 100 episodes in the series, so guaranteed to hit something you like. strongly recommended for the musicological nerds.
also fun to watch are his "Top 20 Countdown" lists (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLW0NGgv1qnfyZapBWVmTPHzTFncPgkLXn), AKA "Top 20 (X) of all time" (top 20 guitar solos of all time, top 20 rock vocals, top 20 alternate tunings songs, etc). contrary to the million such musical listicles out there, Rick's lists are defensible.

if you're looking for a new webseries/vlog/talking head to watch, you could certainly do worse than Justin Hawkins Rides Again (https://www.youtube.com/@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain). back in the heyday of The Darkness, Hawkins was a douchebag - huge ego, alcoholic/drug addict, diva, etc. sobriety has done wonders for him, and i think he's a engaging show host. he covers mostly topics relating to the music biz, songwriting & guitar (occasionally gets a bit technical), etc.
