All it took for Ovechkin to "rise" to the top was for the best player in the league [Sid] to miss a couple months! Well done Ovie!!

 Good stuff:

If you think they're hot now, wait 'til they're healthy

It all adds up to an 11-6-4 record while the game's most dynamic offensive player was convalescing. The point is that Crosby should return later this week, possibly for NBC's Game of the Week on Sunday at Washington. I caught a glimpse of him working out at Mellon Arena on Sunday morning and despite his ankle woes, let me report that Crosby's hands looked just fine. There seemed to be a spring to his stride and an eagerness to be back around the action that wasn't apparent even a week ago. [he actually returned last night & setup the winner]

Then you have recently-acquired Marian Hossa, spraining the MCL in his right knee during his first game with the Pens after his trade from Atlanta. He could likewise return this weekend. Add in stalwart defenseman Ryan Whitney -- out the past few games with a groin strain -- and you suddenly see the Penguins' lineup that was envisioned by GM Ray Shero when he retooled his roster at last week's trade deadline by adding Hossa, checking forward Pascal Dupuis and space-eating defenseman Hal Gill, he of the 6' 7" wingspan. Veteran Gary Roberts might even be available to patrol the wing during the postseason and -- maybe more importantly -- manage the locker room.

So, right now in Pittsburgh there is satisfaction in the season thus far, and rightly so. But that mood pales in comparison to the anticipation of what might yet be. Everyone wants to see what this team looks like fully assembled. Shero smiled broadly when I put that premise to him and he offered a sly, "We'll see."

Lidstrom was only out a few weeks. Alternately, I'm not sure Daniel Alfreddson or Roberto Luongo missed anytime this year.

I know! Hard to believe, but indeed the Sabres & Pens bandwagon fans are waaaay worse. At least Flyer fans are hockey knowledgeable.

There is no official source for attendance figures except the NHL, and they don't give them out. You can only dig around and find bits and pieces. Hockey's Future board is a decent site for info. As you'll see some teams giveaway as many as 4000 tickets a game.

Perfect example of yet another clueless Pen fan.

Ovie didn't have to 'rise' to surpass Crosby. Ovechkin was awarded the Calder Trophy  with 124 of 129 first place votes for best rookie over Crosby two season ago.

While Crosby is good and was on pace before the injury for
 34 goals 80 assists - 114 pts

 For some perspective,
Gretzky's stats in his 3rd year
 92 goals 120 assists - 212 pts!

Yeah, Ovie is sooooooo far ahead in points. I don't know how anyone could catch him. Puh-leeze....

 A. Ovechkin = 90 points

 E. Malkin = 89 points [/b]
The Hart is given to the MVP (hence why I posted all the other stats about Ovie)

The Ross is given for most points, tool.

It'd be fun to take a video quizzing Pen's fans at Sunday's game. Are You Smarter Than A Pen's Fan? "Name three Pen's players other than Crosby."

That's easy!

 A better question is:

Name three Caps players other than Ovechkin that are WORTH mentioning.

Obviously the Calder is a weak indicator of future talent: Show us the head-to-head record of all games Sid versus Ovie - Individual stats & team win/losses.

Unless of course those NHL stats aren't to be trusted either

Here's a suggestion... instead of watching Crosby's kool aid lips, try watching actual games.

Nicklas Backstrom is leading the league in rookie points.
Mike Green is leading the league in d-men goals.
They acquired some dude named Sergei Fedorov for leadership but he's probably not worth mentioning because he never played for the Penquins.

Calder - Yeah, the 124 of 129 Pro Hockey Writers that voted for Ovie don't understand goals and winning and stuff.

No, those stats are what we call verifiable and can be trusted. That means people that actually watch games can confirm them. Attendance is given to the league by the owners, which means they might not be so accurate.

Alexsander Semin, Cristobal Huet, Nicklas Backstrom, Sergei Federov...

The Caps aren't great, but they certainly have a handful of great pieces around Ovechkin, especially on offense. Their defense needs an overhaul, Green aside.

that's fine, and i understand that, but then why send me to the table you disputed in the first place? i'm happy the caps are getting better attendance numbers, its cool that they are building a nonhomoerotic, nonmulletted team (or something) completely devoid of douchebag fans. should be fun.

Because on the website just above the 'Reported Attendance' links that you posted is 'Gate Receipts, Complimentary Tickets, Average Ticket Price '
according to the Globe and Mail.

No team can be completely devoid of douchebag fans. I guess you've never seen the dude that wears a red cape to every game. Its fun to get him mad by calling it a cape, he prefers 'cloak'.

Because this is a Capitals thread, I'd like to point out that they're #18.

I'm going to make no comment about who's #1 because this is not their thread.
