Good Charlotte, with the first song being The Anthem.

Complaining about the sound quality at a venue that hasn't opened yet may be peak 930 forum all-time. Congrats, Yada. The sound at that place is awful.

Where will y'all eat around there?

new 930 Club was Smashing Pumpkins....The video bootleg of one of those two nights is so, so good.
Who can predict who will play that night?
Who can predict who will play that night?
Foo Fighters are 5:3 favorites, but I predict Seth will pull out a classic, a la Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, or Loretta Lynn. Perhaps Neil Diamond.
Obviously I meant a "legend" booking like, for example, the Johnny Cash show at the 9:30 club that happened before Johnny, you know...died.
What if OAR opens The Anthem?
apparently Phish is going to play 1 song that will last 3 hours....it will be like a jamosaurus show...
Robert Palmer would be amazing #justsaying
yikes I hate OAR more than nickelbackWhat if OAR opens The Anthem?
I know for one, Sidehutch would be happy.
Allegedly there is a pool on top of Anthem and the bottom of said pool is glass, so you can look at people swimming while you take in a show. Not sure how I feel about this.
it would be great if Chuck Berry made an appearance even just to wave hello... He will not be around much longer....
Pool on the roof at Anthem, pools backstage at MPP. . . what's with Seth's sudden obsession with aquatic recreation?
Just spitballing here but what if -- what if!? -- a sequence of events began the night Seth hung out with Hutch leading to Seth digesting several hallucinogenic drugs to dull the pain of the experience. Suppose then the freshly laced-Seth then went back to his home and watched Kevin Smith's film Tusk on Amazon Prime. In his delusional, drug-addled state, the middle-aged Seth then was overcome by a moment of psychedelic bliss while seeing the Cronenbergian body horror tale of the effeminate, coquettish boy-masquerading-as-man that is Justin Long being sadistically transformed into a walrus. What if I were then to posit that through some sort of psychological transference, Seth's brain became rewired to associate that kaleidoscopic euphoria with the hallucinatory fever-dream of himself becoming a walrus, which in turn leads to our millionaire friend using his connections and personal wealth to ensconce his business empire with swimming pools, the perfect habitat for the walrus he is transitioning into. Its the thread on which this entire series of events hangs together, people; read between the lines and its clear as the sharp, baleful incisors Seth betrays with every smile.

Gonna guess that The Smashing Pumpkins reunion starts at Anthem
Why would he set up a Presale with all of this walrus talk ?!jules don't do FWB...so if Seth wanted to exclude the walrus wonk...that would the way to go
Is the price point just because it is opening night + a band which would regularly play Verizon Center or Jiffy Lube Live?
Great question. Because to be honest, that's the one reason why I'm on the fence about even going. I'm curious to check out Anthem, but $100...wow. Looking over my concert ticket stubs from the years, I realize touring is the way bands make money and they've had to raise tickets costs, but I really have to start to be more selective about what I pay for shows because my salary doesn't match how expensive DC has become. There's absolutely no way I can afford to pay $100 for club shows. For the same reason why I rarely go to super expensive restaurants. I'm glad someone has the money to enjoy these things on a regular basis, but it ain't me.

you are at 14...might have to kill four bordies to make it to that party
I wouldn't be against a catered private boardie suite for the top 10 current boardies. Seth?
I figured the $100 price point was due to the Opening Night Gala that would certainly accompany the concert. Red carpet, champagne cocktail hour, seat fillers, etc...
Am I mistaken?

I suspect that you get an exclusive Most Excellent Seat (tm), rather than being forced to stand shoulder to shoulder with your brethren, breathing on the back of one's neck whilst another breathes upon yourn. And does Seth have an appropriate amount of security to make sure us glitterati and those of our ilk don't have commoners make eye contact with us? One of the most exhausting part of any concert is bellowing at scum "DON'T YOU DARE LOOK AT ME!"
This would be a good opportunity for one of those Friends with Benefits presales since the sharks will be out for these tickets.

Tickets will definitely be above $50 to see Wilco there.
6500 capacity with mostly standing? As if it's not already hard enough to see anything at other smaller standing venues. This sounds worse.
Pass.
Just got an email informing me I was overcharged for my Foo Fighters tickets and I will be receiving a refund "for the amount mistakenly charged beyond the base ticket price and service charge." I'm guessing they mean the $3.95 delivery fee for a will-call only show.

Anthem
I am excited for this show because I have always wanted to see her live...but slight wince at it costing the same as the Foo Fighters on opening night: $100-$175. Guess this is going to be the Anthem standard.

Dave Grohl's net worth is 225 million. At this point, he should be doing lotteries to randomly play people's living rooms for free as payback to the fans who made him part of the superwealthy, rather than playing $150 shows in oversized clubs.

I wonder if QOTSA will be $100 as well. I checked the other cities but they didn't have prices. It did look like Royal Blood was the opener in other cities. Was wondering the same thing. Can't imagine they command what Lorde or Foos do. Royal Blood rules. I've missed them at Dc9 and 930 smh.

i'm wondering if ever a 930 show starts selling better than expected, will it ever be moved to Anthem? and if an Anthem show's ticket sales are under-performing, will it be moved to 930?
i feel, acts that will be playing the anthem, would never set foot in the 930 . . . because of its size, and they think it's yucky and seedy. and the beer selection.Other than possibly Lorde, every act announced so far for The Anthem have played 9:30 multiple times.

we're asked to do that all the time now...when a show sells out sometimes they want us to move it to a bigger place
I say no
I don't believe in it for a number of reasons, mostly because that's not the promise we made when sold someone a ticket

To know where the seats I just paid a premium for are located. I don't think this is a weird ask.
The first night of LCD Soundsystem sold out impressively fast. Lorde hasn't yet.
Were they THIS red hot when, say, touring Sound of Silver? Or were they buoyed by the hyped Madison Square Garden farewell and the ticketing frenzy it inspired?

LCD Soundsystem were cool from around 2002 - 2005; a little less cool from 2006 - 2007; and definitely not cool from 2007 - present.
Lorde seems pretty cool. I need to listen to her music a bit more to better gauge her (musical) coolness. I do dig her visual aesthetic, and would consider it pretty "cool."

On that topic, what's the most under-attended show you've seen at the 9:30?There was a charity show with a bunch of DC bands (only one I can remember was Federico Aubele) and there was maybe 50 people in attendance. 2004 or 2005, IIRC.
Who da fuq kaleo?
Hmm.... already trying to strategize where to stand with my height-challenged wife for LCD.
On that topic, what's the most under-attended show you've seen at the 9:30? I think mine was Elextrafixion, the band that Ian and Will from Echo and the Bunnymen had before their reunion in 1997. They packed in the Black Cat in autumn of 1995, and I don't think the spring 1996 show was promoted at all. I think there were (maybe) 25 people there? Everyone that stayed was invited backstage afterwards. Super fun night.

I feel like there was a lot more than 6000 people at Merriweather, but I also wouldn't be surprised if there weren't. So.
The ticket I bought for Courtney Barnett + Kurt Vile says general-admission seating. So I guess the Anthem will do entirely seated shows.

Lorde
QOTSA
Phoenix
Courtney and lice
St Vincent
I think if any of them play Echo or DAR, probably would have sold out

Any word on what the food options will be at The Anthem? No, they will not have your beloved Chipotle.
What is it about their food that it rips right through a person?According to excontradiction, it's the healthiness purging fake foods from your body.
I haven't eaten Chipotle for probably six months, had it today and shit myself within 10 minutes.

you either don't drink or take intoxicants when you watch live music ....He's usually tripping on 100% pure, Colombian Chipotle.

Some Boardies are just super colorful on here...in person they're great, and Sidehatch is one of them. He's worth meeting and hanging with.
I also have met the Hatch and he was lovely. Don't let the similarity of his name to Hutch throw you off.You sound so charming, hard it imagine people wouldn't want to talk to you.

But seriously, I've never ubered or lyfted.you either don't drink or take intoxicants when you watch live music ....or just like to drive fucked up and put the rest of the world in grave danger for your inability to use one of the easiest technologies out there
I really fucking hate people who get fucked up and drive...just so the can save $30
DC cabs SUCK ASS so bad, I can't tell you how nice Uber and all the other services have been
plus when you are a little knockered, you don't have to even worry about paying the driver, you just get out and go on your way
also...I was commuting for a little while into DC and Uberpool and Lyftline are great
I'm a social guy and can't stand the metro or the bus where literately no one talks to anyone
obviously not the kind of service for you elites, but it almost always was an enjoyable experience for me
can't stand all you people with headphones ignoring the rest of society that is right next to you...be social people

Likely correct.
So I received an email about getting my tix to the soft opening. Not quite the same as actually getting the tickets. Baby steps, I guess.
They also want everyone there on time. Gonna be tough but will do my best.

I've received nothing except the original email where I picked the day and number of tickets I'd like. The confirmation screen after clicking submit was just that, that the form had been submitted. I've gotten nothing since.
Did anyone get a confirmation email after the original submission?
Looking for parking options as well. Not sure what parking at the wharf will cost (guessing it'll be bad). Guess that's another reason to get down there early (you're welcome, Seth).
Got my QOTSA ticket. No Foo ticket yet.
Got my QOTSA ticket. No Foo ticket yet.
When did you get your QOTSA ticket? Still haven't gotten that yet. Or foos.
for the foo fighters show all 6000 people will have to line up outside single file while a cart manned by 2 anthem employees goes down the line and checks your id against the ticket list. they will then put a wrist band on you. you will also have to put your cell phone in a special bag that locks so you cannot use it during the show. after the show all 6000 people will line up to have their cell phone bag unlocked. have fun.
So did I get blacklisted for the soft opening on Sunday that I signed up for because I started the thread on the set times?
Still haven't gotten an email about it and you all have. Boo hoo.

I seem to recall the invite mentioning something about a free pacifico to all attendees over 21. The implication is that there will be some younger than that. Not sure they anticipated a 7-year old, but if you do wind up with an extra pacifico...LMK.
I, uh, heard some interesting things about the soft opening shows and general Anthem progress from a trusted individual who asked me not to disclose. Things that are, uh, extremely newsworthy.
Awesome post.Thanks! :)

BTW, does anyone have their Tuesday tix yet?
Anyone know if anything else will be open at The Wharf on Oct 8th? Wondering if we can meet up, eat and/or drink down there before doors for the soft opening.
Not sure about the 8th, but apparently the Bacon Brothers will be busking outside of the Foo Fighters on the 12th. Oh, and Fireworks!

I want to echo the parking question. There is a big underground garage, right?
Hey Seth...
Thanks for the preview tonight. Nice to chat with you before we went in.
Some feedback below, both good and constructive.
Good:
-Staff are great. The 930 hospitality training program for staff that work at any of your venues continues its path of success.
-Food is tasty and nice partnering with Red Apron to support another local business.
-Tons of water fountains and water bottle filling stations. YAY!
-Venue is attractive. We all loved the cymbals display.
-Venue is very accessible to the mobility challenged.
Needs improvement:
-Crowd control is non existent. There should have been line dividers set up. This only had probably 2000 people who were all pretty easy going. Thursday is a going to be a shitshow with 6000 people who are not going to be so easy going. Businesses are gonna be pissed when no one can get in their store because there are 3 snacked around lines in front of their doors.
-Sound kinda bounces. Maybe that will be mitigated with a completely full venue but to me it seemed way obvious tonight.
-You need something by the food to show which order number is ready-like one of those deli "no serving" thingies. It was a total clusterfuck of hangry people waiting 40 minutes and your poor staff trying to yell out numbers in a super loud venue.
-Sensors on the automatic soap and water dispensers in the bathroom are a total pain in the ass. All my friends had the same experience and other in the restrooms were bitching as well. I couldn't even get the soap to come out of 3 dispensers.
-Food containers look not to be compostable. My friend is a crazy environmentalist and wasn't pleased to see plastic being used to hold her shrimp. Talk to Sweetgreen and see what company they used for their compostable containers.
Hasn't really been part of anyone's comments yet so I'll presume the answer is "no, but it was fine".
How late did people stay?

The show was fun; very much a tribute to DC's past; but you don't need to go to the anthem to see any of those bands. Seth said that Bob Boilen was the first band to play both 9:30 clubs. To be fair to Julien he only said one of the two nights was amazing and it would be markedly better than the other.
Opened with Bob Boilen's band Danger Painter who I enjoyed. Had kind of a gothic thing going on but it was a huge space for them and a lot of people were talking.
Second band was BatFangs. They have the guitarist from ExHex and a drummer. They had a guest bassist as well. Consensus is that they were the best of the night.
Closing was the Messthetics which was Joe and Brendan from Fugazi plus a guitarist. Totally instrumental. Not bad, but it cleared out by the end.
Kid Congo Powers and Ian Svenonius were DJing at the beginning and the end from the stage.
I saw the whole thing and got to my car by 11:00.
I really liked the standing-room only section on the second floor behind the seated area, but the small stairs separating the "rows" in that area are not lighted and a real hazard.
I really liked the standing-room only section on the second floor behind the seated area, but the small stairs separating the "rows" in that area are not lighted and a real hazard.
YES! You can't see the bottom of the stairs (black stairs leading to a black floor in an already dark room). The rail ends before the stairs do, so you're not really expecting there to be more steps. Quite dangerous.
The wifi seemed to turn-on halfway through the night. That was a huge help. I assume there will be hand-driers at some point? Rolls of paper towels on the sinks seemed a bit odd, when everything else was so nice. I agree with whoever mentioned that the signs/doors for the bathrooms need to be lit better. I'm also pretty sure that wasn't Budweiser coming out of the tap in the back of the room. Kind of a mixed-blessing there.
The Metro-based directions need a little work. I walked out of the building and it wasn't clear where to go.
Loved the venue though. Big, yet intimate. Great sightlines. Sounded fine. Beautiful space. Looking forward to seeing some shows there. Great time last night. Thanks!
For a second, I thought you meant Ian McKay, and I was all like fugazi?!?BTW...spotted Ian in the back with his red pork pie hat
what's the walk like between the metro and the joint? I'll make a brief appearance on Tuesday....
Fugazi has played plenty of events that sell beer.
Damn - if only Guy has been therewhat has he been up to?
For a second, I thought you meant Ian McKay, and I was all like fugazi?!?BTW...spotted Ian in the back with his red pork pie hat
Also i think there is a shuttle that operates or will from lenfant but dont know deets
The pictures and feedback I've heard thus far makes me extremely excited for Tuesday evening. I'll be taking the fixed cost $7.99 Uber.
1. Who goes to a rock show to eat food? So who cares about their system or lack there of for ordering.
2. Are we really complaining about soap dispensers? Unless you drop a greasy growler at the show, I'm sure a little less soap won't hurt you.
3. Wifi in a venue? Who gives a shit!!!
Looking forward to it Seth!
We parked in the lot recommended from the email and the walk was about 10 minutes from there. I'm pretty sure the subway exit is from the garage, there were signs to the metro in the building entrance. Cost $20 for parking. I did see metered street parking on the 395 overpass and I would think it would be free at night. Got there right at 7PM and it took 50 minutes to get in! Hopefully, this will be tweaked and better on Tuesday?
I was told that they were expecting 4000 last night and capacity is 6000. If there were 4000 last night, there was still plenty of room. I would imagine that the chairs on the main floor would be taken out for a show like the Foo Fighters (at least the front part of the room). Those chairs were really comfortable as well.
The swimming pool was kind of a letdown - on the third floor balcony and only visible through a few portals. Maybe when it is being used and lit up it will be kind of cool. I missed the cymbal display.
Weird, how most everyone mentioned the faulty soap dispensers, I noticed it as well. I guess, it's a good thing we're all health conscious?
I liked the Messethetics. That's Anthony Pirog playing guitar - he's pretty awesome. It was also strange that the opener played the longest - I wonder if that was expected.
An absolutely world-class venue. Reminded me a little bit of the Moody Theater in Austin (where ACL tapes), but hard to draw comparisons.
I was expecting a big name act, but ultimately the star of the evening was the venue itself. Kinks to be worked out, sure. But that's
the purpose of the soft openings - figure out what doesn't work and fix it before the grand opening.
The sound from the balcony seats was a bit muddy - I couldn't make out the vocals until I moved to the center rear. Moved up front for Bat Fangs and was super glad I did. Charging and signing for each beer seems a hassle. I wonder if that will change.
We paid the $25 to park in the garage. Tons of cars parked on the street in the no parking zones. Not sure what's up with that. Even with the relatively early ending metro was not an option afterwards (I don't think).
it was fun seeing dycraig, but somehow missed all the other boardies
(I was with hutch, so that tends to scare people away ;) )
just found out that I can't make tomorrow...
Looks like my Tuesday night guest got a better deal; So i have an extra for Tuesday's soft open...
yeah, wish i had gotten tickets for tuesday....ohhh well

I'm gonna say most have not heard of those bands.
So wait, people actually paid money to see a headliner that consisted of the two guys from Fugazi who don't sing?

yes, but received an immediate follow up email after.
The stage is impressively big. The bands were really only using about 40% of it, as the proscenium was bumped forward and they didn't use the wings at all. Can't wait to see how the Foo's will fill it!
Do i need my non existent FwB card to get in or just the ticket?

You only need the ticket to get in. You get FWB points for going (theoretically, mine didn't appear in my totals).
I'm debating how early to get in line for Foo Fighters.
Poop tents are for the poor. People of breeding have privy servants whose entire job is to carry, clean, and care for our pre-war decorative chamber pots in times of intestinal distress.I'm debating how early to get in line for Foo Fighters.
Might be worth setting up a poop tent tomorrow afternoon.

Have to say, selling free tickets is pretty low to me.
Any Intel on tonight's talent?
well FWB just sent me a random act of kindness for a special iHeartRadio Foo FAnthem show tomorrow night?
60 min show for the radio...
didn't actually get a ticket yet
I can't go to LCD Soundsystem on 10/18 (their second Anthem show). If anyone wants a free ticket, send me a private message.

Andrew WK was fun, but not like 'OMFG you have to go to this show" fun
super appreciate getting to go to both
love the new venue...would like access to the pool tho
Why should she have to chase her tickets down? If they haven't arrived I'd expect an accommodation for her.Seth doesn't see why she needs to know where her tickets are.
The bar on the lower level left, if you're facing the stage, wasn't great. They got snippy with people trying to order food. I get that the bar tender had said countless times that they couldn't order food at that bar, but the people walking up to order have no clue. The response seemed to be a loud "NO!" and after a few seconds "You have to order from over there!"
Awkward interaction at the same bar:
Me: "Can I also get a cider?"
Bartender: "For what?"
Awkward pause while we stare at each other
My wife: "For me. For money."
Yah...charging after each transaction was/is (?) interesting......i wonder if it would lead to people spending less..I didn't bother on Sunday, but what about getting FwB credit after each transaction?? I spend a lot of cash-ish at the bar. Though, with my thousands of points, I didn't get the iHeardRadio invite. Not that I'm a Foo fan or anything. ;P
Have to say i got my beers super quick

Anyone have a hi-res seating chart? The one on Ticketfly sucks for figuring out where the seat #s are.
I'm debating how early to get in line for Foo Fighters.I'm getting kind of antsy about getting an email with instructions, times, etc. I work, and just got Trumped at work, so things are chaotic and I need to plan!
Does anyone with more knowledge than myself know/understand how a club capacity that drastically changes from 2,500 people to 6,000 people handles ticket sales?
For example, someone like Foo Fighters obviously sets the bar at 6,000 tickets and you go from there in hopes of it easily selling out?
On the other hand, bands like say War on Drugs or Kurt Vile who in my opinion would probably be lucky to sell 3,000 tickets, do they set that # in advance or just hope for number XXX and when they get there they say it's sold out?
TIA.
Assume they will sell as many up to capacity given in the contract / seating config on the floor (if any) and move the stage ala 930 appropriately...Does anyone with more knowledge than myself know/understand how a club capacity that drastically changes from 2,500 people to 6,000 people handles ticket sales?

The club is beautiful, there are great sight lines from just about everywhere, it feels like the 9:30 Club but is of course mammoth, and the staph is fantastic. I'm thrilled. I realize a soft opening is *specifically* to find out about and work out the bugs, so, the handsoap dispensers did not work at all. And the food window was pretty chaotic. And, no cell service to speak of.
But I am grateful of the many I.M.P. venues that I love, in this city that I love!
Foo tomorrow will be a shit show, but I'm sure I've experienced worse.
I'm debating how early to get in line for Foo Fighters.I'm getting kind of antsy about getting an email with instructions, times, etc. I work, and just got Trumped at work, so things are chaotic and I need to plan!
Anyone have a hi-res seating chart? The one on Ticketfly sucks for figuring out where the seat #s are.

There's a follow-up "pork that midget" joke to be made but it would be crass.

You had anal with Relaxer?
Anyone have a recommendation of a place to watch the Nats game that is close to the venue? Want to get a bit of viewing in before doors open.
If you mean today, likely nothing. Tomorrow is the "grand opening" of the Wharf, but its hard to say what will actually be open...

Unfortunately no... I'd recommend hanging at Navy Yard or Barrack's Row and taking a five minute uber over. Pro Tip, put the address of 800 9th street SW as the pick up/drop off location.

I was cleaning out my wallet and found a bar receipt ($$$) from Sunday night and it lists the address as 990 Maine Ave.
And, no cell service to speak of.
I think the food issue is a problem they may not solve right away. We ordered within 15 minutes of opening and waited until 7:30. The orders, when they came up, were in a totally random fashion. Added to the mess was the fact that they have no way of announcing which orders have come up.
conspiracy theory: the venue is scrambling cell service, on purpose.
it's going to be commuter hell between the show and the game so add in lots of extra time if taking the metro or driving. green line is going to jam packed and 395/295/14th street bridge will be gridlock.
I was hanging out in back and meet Bags briefly last night. How long did they end up playing? I lost steam around 10 and with the 15 minute walk back to L'efant slipped out.. Venue is indeed top notch!
I have no skin in the game and don't really care, but curious how many people will be butthurt that really they're not going to the opening of The Anthem tonight where in reality it's been open all week with the main headliner playing two nights in a row?Tuesday and last night did not have Julian in the building. Sunday and tonite do. That's your real FOMO point.
Hutch, if you are able to get any free tickets, please share with us. We'll make it worth your efforts, I promise.
Have to say a colossal thank you to the Director for hooking me up with a ticket. Such a thoughtful gesture, and I am so grateful. Sorry we didn't cross paths last night, but we will in the future. I owe you.
My thoughts:
1) The venue: pretty stunning. It has the stature of something like the Aragon in Chicago, but a 21st Century version with much better sound and more comfortable. It's so funny how it feels like a club and a small arena at the same time. It just depends on what's going on. With the Foos on stage, they make it feel like one big party. But it's going to be interesting to see how the feel of the venue changes depending upon who is on stage. And that stage is huge. I didn't have any issues getting in, and I'm grateful that the capacity was capped. It was easy to move around and check things out. Though I didn't buy any drinks or eat anything, it looked like there were a lot of options. I recognized some staff (didn't see Hutch though) and everyone working there seemed pretty cool.
2) The Foos: not my favorite show of theirs, but very fun. Dave was talking to Seth during the set, who was right above me and beaming down like a proud papa admiring his new baby. The set was actually a solid 2 hours...they wrapped up just before 11pm. Pretty impressive that they gave us a full show. I am sure tonight will be more grand, I was wondering if maybe they'd bring in some special guests or something.
3) Overall: we needed a venue of this size, and we got it. The face of music has definitely changed, and unfortunately most of the bands that I want to see aren't playing the 9:30 Club anymore. Most are either of a more specific taste, so they grace smaller stages. Others will be at the Anthem. So in a lot of ways, this is the venue that we'll likely be spending more and more time at. It'll be interesting to see how easy it is to get there and leave, especially using ride shares, because I don't see the Metro as being the most convenient option. That whole part of the city is now changed for good. I can't believe walking around there how much they put there. If it's true Millennials are starting to leave DC, then we'll see if all the growth in the city is sustainable. I wish Seth and all the other business owners great success. I'm not sure how often I'll be able to attend shows, weekends are safer bets for me. I'll just assume most nights the headliner will go on in the 8:30 to 9:15 range. Hutch, if you are able to get any intel, please share with us whatever you find out. We'll make it worth your efforts, I promise.

Are you allowed to kneel at the Anthem?Ha, you come in at just the right time, GGW.
Is it true that there is an 11:00 "curfew" for all shows at The Anthem?
It'll make things easy if we find out all shows must be over by 11!Is it true that there is an 11:00 "curfew" for all shows at The Anthem?
I think this crosses the line into "set time" information.
But seriously, I almost always ask the staph when the show is going to end. A rare occasion that they don't know...

The view towards Shake Shack is nice. No idea how to upload an image so you'll have to take my word on it. Or wait for someone smarter to do it.

Really? I would guess DC has probably the most NPR listeners per capita.

I was joking about the love of NPR, but I really didn't think a show where the artists weren't announced would sell out immediately. (I also was surprised that my friends wanted to go so badly)

Food service attempt #2. The cash registers were properly transmitting orders to the kitchen last night, but they still haven't quite figured out how to get the food to the people. This system isn't working. I finally got mine when somebody from the kitchen came out into the crowd, took my receipt, and found my food on the counter. My number was not listed on the whiteboard, so more than likely, I was given somebody else's food that matched my order. Fixed my problem, but I'm sure caused major headaches down the line...

seems to me that that last part could be solved with a $10 whiteboard.

has anyone made a "kneel before the Anthem" joke anywhere?
Changes already so ask questions like reg balcony smokin
What time are we thinking LCD goes on tomorrow and wed?
Can’t get there until 9 but site lists showtime as 8p
so how long should one expect to stand in line for these sold out shows? (tonight for example). I'm leaving right after work, but assume I won't get down there until 6:30 or so due to traffic.
Why, exactly, is it taking so long to get people inside?
People are being "wanded", tickets scanned and IDs checked...you can imagine people cleaning out pockets etc...and because the entrance is on the waterfront there really isnt more space to have additional lines...
I was wanded at 9:30 on Friday.People are being "wanded", tickets scanned and IDs checked...you can imagine people cleaning out pockets etc...and because the entrance is on the waterfront there really isnt more space to have additional lines...
So why are the wanding people at Anthem but not at 9:30?
I was wanded at 9:30 on Friday.Show us on the doll where the President "wanded" you. . .
So you can stand in line for an hour before they start processing people, or you can stand in line for an hour once they start. If you don't care about the opening act, just come at 8:30. The line should be gone by then, yes?
right now the line process is basically like at an airport..security is a bigger concern these days at venues given recent events.. I'm sure it is going to get better but make the necessary adjustments particularly for a sold out show... if you're planning to have that one last drink before heading over and then waltz on in.. well, it ain't going to happen.. not at the moment based on what I have seen...
Are you saying the website listed shows other than the Foos on opening night as sold out?
The Foo Fighters opening night was a sold out show.
I note the Super Excellent Seats are pretty much always sold out.
I was there last night for Phoenix as a patron...I had a great time..not sure much more to say...

Sorry, this is bullshit. You shouldn't have to wait in line for an hour to get processed for a show. This isn't the fucking airport, it's not a fucking federal facility and it's not a sports stadium. It's a mid sized concert venue. There is no reason to not have an issue like this at Anthem but not 930.
Fuck security theater.
I'll never understand why we blame the venues (hotels, etc) for mass shootings, rather than the guns. Don't buy into the NRA narrative! Stunning that DC just legalized concealed carry. Sad!
I'd much prefer a bit of a wait to get in vs. being shot up by some pscyho, but that's just me.
What were the set times for LCD last night?
By new song you mean the one James said they were playing live for first time?

It's my potentially wrong understanding that only a few of the wharf restaurants are actually open at this point. Can anyone confirm?
I know some temporarily opened last week and will reopen Monday. My wife and I are coming down for Queens on Friday and would like to eat before the show (sorry, Seth. We did eat at the soft opening, tho).
Anyway, back to the venue itself, I was in awe. Not a bad seat in the house and the sound was terrific. We opted for the center balcony on the second floor since my wife is 5' and we could see everything. My similarly height-abbreviated wife and I were probably near you on the center balcony. She was over the moon at the sightlines everywhere. IMP did an absolutely incredible job with the design of this place. I don't know how many people have made it up to the third floor balcony yet, but it's tremendous as well. The lines at the bars get lighter and lighter the higher you go, too.

Another minor point - the bars don't have a way to scan your FWB card (or in my case, a screenshot I keep on my phone). I had to write down the number on a napkin, and the staph had to figure out how to manually key it in.

depending on your mode of transport to get there, may I suggest dining at the Navy Yard or Barrack's Row and Ubering over.

One long set. LCD went on at 9:10.

There was a DJ from 8:00 to 9:00. No other opener.
I parked at the Federal Center Plaza - about a 10 minute walk to The Anthem, not bad at all and only $8 - no traffic to deal with.
ANOTHER THING
Seth, stop selling bottled beer, or at least stop allowing patrons to take bottle beer into the venue. There were people dancing in the same area as beer bottles being kicked around. Now not every show at the Anthem is going to be as dancy as LCD but it's still dangerous to be having bottles rolling around on the GA floor.
Simply pour them into plastic cups if you insist on selling bottled beer.
I agree on wrist bands but putting on 6000 wrist bands will slow things...
100% in disagreement here. Plastic cups lead to spills. Bottles have been used at 9:30 for forever without issue. I loved that I could get bottled beer last night. The number of bottles left after the show was pretty small considering the size of the crowd. People are generally pretty thoughtful with this..

A drunk dude once smashed his bottle over my forehead at a 9:30 Cracker/Camper show, requiring multiple stitches after five or six hours of being ignored at Howard Hospital.
Count me in favor of plastic cups.

I think that says more about you than about the presence of beer bottles at a show. Didn't you once get in a fight with a mime in Paris?

James Ford would have made a snarky reply to this but Space will keep it snark free.

Listen to the fun police trying to ban bottles.
I once saw a trashcan full of empty cups bottles etc thrown over the balcony onto a packed floor at the club. Point being, if people gonna get crazy they gonna get crazy.

there is a difference between making a person search out one of three garbage cans on the floor and having them haul it to the railing (easier to spot by staph); and arming everybody full-time with their own hand grenade.
I've never understood the need to drink at a concert anyway, especially at venues that provide free water.

I dunno if u r trying to be dense...
Fyi i am fine with cups..just sayin the tradeoff is longer beer lines...there are already 7 bars at venue plus a popup bar or two so i dont see more bars as possible..if you expect your bottled beer poured it will make things slower..

How long does it take to pour a beer into a glass? 5 whole seconds.
Our voices have been heard. The bartender I ran into (hola!) Said she has been reading the board and was pouring beers into cups.
Takes way less than 5 seconds, by the way. Nonsense.

It just takes time to get 6000 people in
Although if you had the same person doing those 3 tasks it would take longer
As for the show, that was my favorite QOTSA performance and it sounded great where I was standing. I'm surprised/sorry some of you folks weren't into it!

I've never had that issue at the Aragon or the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium or Radio City Music Hall, all of which are roughly the size of the Anthem. I'd think it would make sense to get people in faster so that they'd be buying beer inside, not spending 30 minutes outside. And in the summertime or dead of winter, that's going to suck donkeys.

No clue how you could say Phil's bar band is better than Dead and Co.

Can I ask what time you got in line? In my experience, the Foo Fighters line moved much more quickly than Monday night's lines did. On Monday I arrived at 8:41 and finally got my wristband on at 9:11. Such a buzzkill to start the show waiting in line that long and then missing the first few songs. Maybe I arrived too late, but my guess was War On Drugs was starting at 9:15, and unfortunately I was 15 minutes off. At least it was a nice night out.
There are three doors at the main entrance but they were only using two to let people in. I saw Seth standing with security in front of the unused third one as I finally made my way in. If they used that door too, that should theoretically let people in 50% faster. Probably not ideal to have several hundred people still waiting in line when the headliner goes on. I'm sure they'll keep working out the kinks over time.
Once inside, I agree with others in that it was great having some space to move around, while still feeling like we could get relatively close.

Yeah the seating thing was a surprise to me too
I went to see Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile last night and was surprised to find that it was a seated show.
The show itself was a lot of fun. Kurt seemed sober and the show was better than their joint record.
So why is Courtney Barnett with Kurt Vile???

Bob usually attracts a contingent of young ones although most fans are older....I have seen him in arenas with GA standing and assigned seats..
A lot of his repertoire is fairly rockin..
Yesterday for grizzly bear it was much less packed than Courtney and there were no seats on floor..Lesh had no seats on floor either
I have noticed a lot of ads about show on my FB feed
So, anyone have an idea of how two day tickets will work for events split between 9:30 and The Anthem?
Here are the facts behind my question. Friend and his wife want to go to The Disco Biscuits. They have a kid, and have decided that one can go to the 9:30 show and the other will go to The Anthem show. The only way to get tickets to 9:30 show is to buy a two day pass, which they did.
Following their purchase, they got concerned that there would be something to identify the person using the ticket on night one that would prohibit the other person from using the ticket on night two. The fine print says to hang on to the ticket to use it on night two.
That would seem unfair to me if that actually happened. The cost of the two night tickets is not discounted. You pay full price for both shows.
Anyone have any ideas about this?

I know you are all concerned...but the hand soap malfunctions continue and they have individual store bought pumps right next to the expensive no touch dispensers
We almost need a hand soap thread

We need a law banning not only automatic soap dispensers but automatic faucets.
I think instead of the motion detector type, that should do it like the doctors do....with the foot pedal controls. Sanitary and simple

Guessing people already stated this, but something has to be done about the entry process. I don't understand why there aren't walk-through metal detectors. Wanding everyone takes forever. And the people who are funneling people in are really not nice. Last night, I said there were three people in my party, he sent two of us through and then berated me for a good 2 minutes because of his mistake when I tried to reach back to get my husband too (who was right next to us).
Why a line, and then a holding pen for another line, and then another line.
I was there for LCD and it was not as bad as it was last night.
Also, holy clusterfuck in the garage. Much easier to park a few blocks up the road. Let's all hope there isn't an emergency because so many exits are blocked by construction gates.
So is this a thing?
I noticed that some shows that were previously sold out tend to have tickets available the week of the show. I know that at some venues, a *few* tickets are released the day or two before the show, but this seems like a larger scale. If Seth holds back 200-300 tickets, then releases them a week before the show, the resale value drops to face. Is this a new way of combating scalpers?

Was very happy to have Super Excellent Seats last night and use the 900 entrance. Although I can't imagine buying these for every show -
or being able to for that matter. The garage afterward - we went back up and hung out by the water a bit to let the cars move out. Wasn't happy at all about the rude staph guy by the merch table who demanded we leave while drinks (and merch) were still being sold. Bad ending to an overall great night.
I don't remember there being a holding area for the LCD show. We stood in the wristband line, and then just walked up into the line to get i and it wasn't a problem at all.
The first rule of the gold level is don't talk about the gold level!
That's what we say on the Platinum level, too.
Can we move the NPR birthday party to the Anthem? I never thought there were quite so many NPR lovers in this town (or that they were so quick on the ticket trigger).
Who is playing that show?
Join NPR Music and public radio stations from across the country for a star-studded concert at Washington D.C.’s famed 9:30 Club. The evening will showcase a top-secret lineup unlike any other, featuring some of the staff’s favorite musicians from the past 10 years. Prepare to be surprised.
Ie, no clue. That's why I didn't think it would sell out so fast
I don't remember there being a holding area for the LCD show. We stood in the wristband line, and then just walked up into the line to get i and it wasn't a problem at all.
So the bottom line is this...
At that venue, with our limited number of entries, and today’s safety routines...you just need to get there earlier for an 8:00 show
6000 people just all can’t come at showtime and expect to walk right in
I’m sorry, that’s just the reality of the situation

I'm totally fine with waiting to get in. I figured we would be waiting.
Soooo....Matt was pretty tanked tonight....
Very disappointing show. I've been a fan of The National since seeing them at the Black Cat in March 2006, and this was the ninth time I've seen them in concert. This was easily the worse show of theirs that I've seen. Matt has never had the best vocal range, but he's apparently given up any pretext of even trying to hit the right notes. Which is unfortunate because the rest of the band was on point. Anyway, I'll be thinking twice about seeing them live again, and, if I do, it would have to be a seated venue. Their music is too slow at this point for standing/dancing.Soooo....Matt was pretty tanked tonight....
When ever I think something's awkward I'll just remember the time I saw someone forget the lyrics to their hit song, twice, and made the band stop playing it....
can i get some opinions on set times for the thievery NYE show?I'm curious how the advertised free champagne toast is going to work at Midnight. With The Anthem's well-documented terrible inability to get people in the facility or serve drinks in anything approaching a timely manner, I have a feeling some attendees will still be waiting for their champagne at the vernal equinox.
doors 7.30pm
i'm thinking:
trouble funk at 8.30pm for an hour.
gogol bordello at 9.45pm for an hour.
thievery corporation at 11pm for two hours. i just don't know how late to expect them to play because of the building noise ordinance.
normally i wouldn't care about the ending time but i've got friends potentially coming in and they need to plan for the babysitter and getting back to VA whereas i only need to walk 3 blocks home.
Great crowd...good people...even Seth made an appearance
Only bittersweet moment for me was thinking of Pam Bricker when they launched into Lebanese Blonde
anyone else go last night? show was fucking great.
an hour of trouble funk, an hour and twenty minutes of gogol bordello and 2 hours of thievery corporation.
balloon drop; many of which were phallic shaped. no champagne toast but it was all ages.
really good crowd; very few obnoxious and/or drunk fucks and a minimal of folks pushing their way to through and we were pretty close to the front. lots of weed from people who like to share their weed.
super friendly staff (as always.)
no wait to get in (but it wasn't sold out-maybe 2/3? curious what the crowd size was), no wait at the bars, barely a wait for the bathroom. looked to be a hella wait for coat check.
and a mere 3 block walk there and back from home.
best new years in years. Thanks Seth and Staph!!!!!!!!!
i was actually surprised at the amount of weed at the show. i fully expected the staph to go through the crowd and ask patrons to hold off until later when they are in their own homes where it's legal, rather than in the venue where it's technically illegal.
I’ll be glad to give a more in-depth review tomorrow but I had a totally opposite experience at Thievery Corporation. Horribly executed event. Seth should spend less time stroking his ego by being terrible on drums and more fixing the operational nightmare that is The Anthem. Will not be attending again for quite some time.
It wasn’t even close to full and it’s still a total shitshow.

Little warning here...
I welcome and need constructive criticism and comments about the venue so we can figure out how to improve
I actually enjoy that as much as the compliments...anyone who knows me knows that I am never satisfied and even feel suspicious if things are going too well
However...
We are not going to tolerate personal attacks on anyone anymore
No warnings, you'll just get bounced permanently
While I found Julian's insults immensely entertaining, it has come to my attention that other people's feelings have been hurt so we need an overall policy
This package for the Little big town show is a bit much

still waiting for recap.
He's semi-retired, you know.Yeah, I'm phasing myself out of this community. The general tenor around here has been crappy for a while but the last year or so has been particularly annoying.
Coat check waits (dropping off and picking up) are insane and the phone number system could not possibly take longer.

Don't you mean robe check?

I didn't say I planned on deleting my account or never posting. I just find myself spending increasingly less and less time on here and enjoying the time I do less. Couple that with all but 2-3 of the worthwhile members already being in my orbit via social media and other outlets . . .He's semi-retired, you know.Yeah, I'm phasing myself out of this community. All legends come back... or never go away.
You don't check a robe like that, son.
I wore it the night before to Armin Van Buuren and the response was so phenomenal I asked housekeeping to bring me another immediately (because the first one was not in a condition to be worn a second day in a row) and then wore robes two nights in a row. My misses was similarly flummoxed. You don't check a robe like that, son.
I think my favorite part was when the Mrs saw it, she said "not surprising, Julian wore the robe to the wine hour just like you did."
I said "No, he wore it the New Years Party at the club!"
"Oooooh......"
Is merch cashless too?
Finally making it out to my first show at The Anthem on Thursday. What's the official opinion on where to park? Is the garage worth it? Can I find street parking close by?
there is a free shuttle at Lenfant.

Is there truly no way to transfer a super-excellent seat? I have one for Alice In Chains but got screwed by being assigned unexpected work travel that week and no I can’t go. Would really rather not “eat” the ticket $.
Anyone have any tips/suggestions for this kind of situation?
Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere but I didn’t find anything about it when searching the forum.
For seated shows -- in general how have audience been for sitting vs. standing/dancing? And specifically, what do you think that ratio will be for DAVID BYRNE?
I believe this will be the 2nd seated show so far (on the floor), the first one being a classical concert. For seated shows -- in general how have audience been for sitting vs. standing/dancing? And specifically, what do you think that ratio will be for DAVID BYRNE?

The oasis dude where everyone was given free tickets was a "seated" show where everyone on the floor stood up at their seats.
What is offered at the HH upstairs?25% off drinks and $5 Pacificos until the first band.

I don't have any tips on that but I have to say the Super Excellent Seats experience is nice. You can show up whenever, perfect view and the lines for the beer and bathroom are a breeze. The non-transfer aspect is the one drawback but I get why its the policy.

Has This been confirmed anywhere if these tickets can be transferred? I see some on StubHub...

From the Anthem website:
"Q: Are tickets transferable?
A: Super Excellent Seats are always non-transferable. The ID of the person attending must match the purchaser’s name, which will be printed on the ticket face."
I know some have had success going to the venue, claiming the tickets, and selling prior to the show. Obviously that's tough if you have a scheduling conflict preventing you from attending in the first place. I do like the policy though. It mostly keeps the scalpers away.
Yes this has been posted multiple times
I see what you are saying
I guess now people can see all SES left instead of being given one option but the caveat is you don’t know where on row you are?
Well...it’s a good point
I guess that is the way TM does it but it seems lame
I wonder why they do it that way?
It's because people buy an odd number of seats. They want to maximize seating by putting a singleton next to a threesome.I've been dissed for choosing 3 seats on the end of a row where there is a single in the middle left over at Cap One
Can you believe its been 2 years!
on this date in 2017 the Foo Fighters plays a free DC101 show, the day before the paid Opening show
good times
Happy five year anniversary Anthem!!Good Lord, time is flying.
WOOT!!!
DAR is actually pretty good with non-amplified music.so barbershop quartets
IT ISNOT A MUSIC VENUE
you left outIT ISNOT A MUSIC VENUE
Tell that to
and perhaps a brazilian other bands that have played there.
Al Gore! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuXFdLA9ZF4)
I don’t think DAR has even close to same capacityI want to say its like 3800?
Ok what about the seats? You like the seats? What about how you couldn’t bring drinks in, you like that?I wasn't discussing seats or drinks because no one was discussing seats or drinks up until right this second. The repeated canard on here, reiterated thru "ITS NOT A MUSIC VENUE" type comments, is to say the sound is bad which is about the least rock-n-roll thing I've ever heard and remains a reverse Emperor's New Clothes that people in this community thinks makes them -- I dunno -- "a tr00er music fan than someone else" or something.
Worse show ever at DAR: MoeI don't think DAR was the problem at that show

I also know a Howard with deplorable taste in music. I wonder if we know the same Howard or this runs in the Howard Bloodstream?Worse show ever at DAR: MoeI don't think DAR was the problem at that show
True. My friend Howard got me a ticket….big mistake to take it
Pet Shop Boys sounded like shit
Well the good news is DAR is still open for you!
Great show last night at Anthem with Killers and Johnny Marr…they did a short set of Smiths songs… they just played Cap One a few days ago so interesting combo….
You would have paid $125 or $259 to see Johnny Marr?
You kinda of overlooked that he was on The The's amazing albums Mind Bomb and Dusk
His work with Bryan Ferry, Kirsty MacColl, Billy Bragg and Hans Zimmer (The Inception Soundtrack)
of all the low-down rotten things Seth has done, this tops the listI am in total agreement. I have no comments. He is an outstanding person aside from this deceptive subject line WHICH HE PERSONALLY LIKELY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT, BUT THERES JUST NOTHING ELSE TO POINT OUT.
Wasn’t there a soft opening where it was rumored to be Fugazi but it was just the Messthetics and maybe like Andrew WK? Wasn’t that before the Foos and not close to capacity?
Right on. Maybe that’s what Hutch’s mystery man was referring to.Wasn’t there a soft opening where it was rumored to be Fugazi but it was just the Messthetics and maybe like Andrew WK? Wasn’t that before the Foos and not close to capacity?
I went to both.
This seems the most likely explanation. Very unlikely that none of us — especially you working for IMP — heard nothing about the is for seven years. But I guess no way of knowing for sure unless Seth deigns to comment on this.
Maybe he got the soft open with Andrew wk mixed up with foos
