there's also an interesting preview for some unnamed, mysterious film from the guy who did lost, that comes out in jan. '08.

I just watched Breach and Little Children (both came out on DVD recently) and thought they were really good as well.

I think I love it for two aspects in particular: (1) The cinematography on that film is absolutely gorgeous. You might have to have an eye for cinematography to fully appreciate it though. It's not like the kind where the scenery is beautiful; it's the kind where the shots are framed just perfectly and the camera moves are incredibly well done. (2) Even more importantly, the writing is superb. The dialogue is very life-like, and the characters just seem so human. I think it's marvelous. I love the acting and the actors, too. The casting is perfect. OK, that makes three things. :)
In the other movie thread "Raising Victor Vargas" is mentioned...I watched it...It was all right. Curious why some of you LOVE the movie?

I don't know what the interest level is here on the forum, but I only had to mention it to some friends of mine who don't normally go to many concerts and they leaped at the chance. I'm bringing four friends. If the movie had received even slightly wider distribution, I'm sure I'd know a few more who would attend, too.
So with all the raves for "Once," are any of you going to see The Swell Season on July 26?? Seems like there's been very little interest around here...

a robocop reboot... really? Why not? Detroit's erecting a statue to RoboCop. Just the sort of positive momentum needed for a reboot.

Agreed. But, it helps to have seen Before Sunset and Before Sunrise first. Do guys like these movies? Or are they a girl thing? I don't think they're chick flicks, but I also don't know many guys who like them.

I've heard nothing but amazing things about Snowpiercer. It just went up on Netflix over the weekend. It's been on my list. Rotten Tomatoes has it up to 95%, if that means anything to you. I watched the trailer after seeing The Hunger Games and thought it kind of looked the same. Except a train is involved. Still, I've heard great things. Will also be heading out opening day to see Interstellar.
I'll give it a shot. It was weird seeing Hunger Games then seeing that trailer. Saw it. Was underwhelmed. Like a fucked up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Too many holes and so predictable!
I'm interested in giving Snowpiercer a chance although its definitely not a genre I usually enjoy. Glad for the heads up its on Netflix now. I think Nebraska hits Netflix this week as well which I've wanted to see.
The Drop, no dvd release date yet though. Tom Hardy is really good in this film.I was hoping for more action in this movie. Tom Hardy is awesome in it though. Was kind of let down, but it's worth a view.

Their imagery is always very cool. Their videos are super cool. I love their music but a lot of people don't... It was funny to see them playing themselves [I think] in the trailer. I thought Elysium was a little preachy, but I think I can get down with Chappie.

I thought it was excellent. Loved the soundtrack. Edward Norton was great.
Caught Nightcrawler last night. That Jake Gyllenhal was great. Movie was entertaining. Don't know if I'll watch it again though. Some parts seemed to drag a bit.
were you pleased with the ending? it left me feeling... empty? unfulfilled? I don't know. i'm still torn on that bit.
Edward Norton WAS great and Naomi Watts is at her best when she's playing airheaded, disaffected celebs (i.e. huckabees)

good. never before have i heard a more flip flopping review from people, regarding that movie. i would like to see it, but was not sure whether to waste my time to find it.
i live in the national forest . . . we watch possums, raccoons and skunks the size of small dogs, as our on demand entertainment.
Wild was a solid B-. I didn't read the book, but I imagine they tried to jam a lot of book into a little movie so important things seem hinted at but never fully fleshed out. The scenery alone makes it worth viewing.
I really liked Boyhood, but I don't know how much of that was just because the production format was so unique and how much was because of the story. Either way, definitely worth seeing if you have not already.
Saw Gone Girl over the holiday. What stinking pile of horseshit of a movie.
saw Under the Skin and loved it. Probably my favorite movie of 2014. The soundtrack is great as well. The composer in question is Mica Levi, aka Micachu, the 27-year-old classically trained multi-instrumentalist best known for her experimental pop with Micachu and the Shapes. ?Mica is very insightful and intuitive,? Glazer recently told Pitchfork. ?We had a lot of discussions about what sounds might work and what wouldn?t, and when we heard the ones that sounded right, they became the language for the film. All those bendy and stretched notes just felt correct. It came half from the heart, half from the head.? Glazer?s use of ?language? is apt, as the music really does speak for Skin?s characters and situations, especially since there are, at most, 50 lines of dialogue throughout the film?s 108 minutes. As Levi explained, the music is ?supposed to feel like a life-form you can?t quite understand, but it?s carrying on relentlessly, like a beehive

I enjoyed Ex Machina.I thought it was one of the best looking movies of the year. The movie itself kind of drags in points. The ending was cool. Probably won't watch it again.

Was told over the weekend that "It Follows" was a fun movie. Was also intrigued by "Ex Machina"... Anyone seen either of these? Wanna head out to the movies and catch one of these.Since horror is the topic of the day; yes to It Follows. It Follows is an excellent movie with an interesting premise. Rent/download/stream/buy it soon, it is definitely something I would recommend as an avid horror movie fan.
in my opinion, which means what outside of my mind, the greatest zombie anything of all time, is return of the living dead, which someone already mentioned. I give, silent moments on honor to that film and the line of 'send more cops' will last forever.
Ok still really no new news on this....but there is a Blade Runner 2 (http://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2015/feb/27/blade-runner-2-harrison-ford-ridley-scott-10-things-to-hope-for) coming out
It?s official: Blade Runner 2 is on, and the boys are back together again. Original director Ridley Scott is producing, Harrison Ford is back as detective Deckard, and the screenplay is co-written by the original?s Hampton Fancher, based on an idea by him and Scott. Prisoners/Enemy director Denis Villeneuve is due to direct it next summer, and Ford says the script is ?the best thing he?s ever read?. Is it too good to be true?
but I hate to get my hopes up as I know they are going to screw it up

Far From the Madding Crowd
Watched Insidious over the weekend, was surprised at how left field it goes at the end. It was creepy/weird enough and then it just goes off the deep end. Although I'm also kind of happy to see movies kind of stay dedicated to their weirdness lol.Insidious 2 is pretty good too. I also really enjoyed Insidious 3, the prequel. It tells the story of how the investigation team was formed. I watched it a week ago.
On Friday night, I hosted "Scary Movie Night" for a pile of 11 yr olds, all full of balls and bravery about watching the scariest movie ever even though most (including my son) had never seen a real horror movie. I wanted to scare them poopless but also remember that they're 11 so after we debated Nightmare on Elm Street, the original Alien, and Halloween, we somehow settled on the original Poltergeist.
And holy shit, that movie is MUCH scarier than I'd remembered. And man did it ever hit my nostalgia pleasure centers having been 11 yo when it was filmed. And the kids were absolutely terrified. It's the perfect 'first horror movie' for kids because while it's scary as hell, no one dies and there's no gore apart from that bathroom mirror scene.
A+ would watch again

I was just talking about how Poltergiest was way scarier this weekend! So far, our scary movies this year were The Exorcist (yes, I'd never seen it. I didn't really like it. It was gross and not scary), Rosemary's Baby, Zombieland (an annual tradition, whatever happened to the sequel?), Halloween, Babadook, and Charlie Brown.
K8t, you mentioned, on this very page!, two movies that I need to get around to watching: Rosemary's Baby and Babadook. I've heard Babadook is difficult/un-fun to watch if you're a parent. I can't stand kids-in-peril movies, and this did affect me while watching Poltergeist but I knew no one dies so I wasn't that bent outta shape about it.
Oh yeah, also watched It Follows a week or so ago. A lotta hype for a perfectly fine horror movie that I'll never think about again. Interesting concept though.
Just downloaded Bone Tomahawk, a horror-western, and am looking forward to checking that out this week.
Didn't know you could download Bone Tomahawk! Legally?

and in 70mm. Quentin thinks that is important, so ok!
Was underwhelmed. Probably my least favorite of all of his films. Not sure why it rubbed me the wrong way. I thought some parts were great and it didn't really drag [considering it's almost 3 hour run time], and I thought it was a fun "who-done-it", but it just lacked something for me. Maybe he set up the whole "I can't trust anyone in this movie" and didn't have a character to get behind and then the movie kind of just ends. Not sure. It also was probably his least violent film.Hateful Eight! I am thinking about going to see it tomorrow. Merry Christmas indeed!!!!I went to Raleigh to see this on Boxing Day. i have watched the trailer a couple of times, and i finally felt a level of disappointment with the what i was seeing as a possible tarantino film. i love his films, and when i see a trailer for one, i get excited and am like . . . yeah, i gotta drag my ass to the damn theatre again. but not this one. it seemed, lacking somehow. but maybe i just need to see it.Just FYI: a dude hangs dong.
Also dong hanging in Django. Maybe this is a new bit for Tarantino. First the trunk shot, now it's hanging dong.i have watched the trailer a couple of times, and i finally felt a level of disappointment with the what i was seeing as a possible tarantino film. i love his films, and when i see a trailer for one, i get excited and am like . . . yeah, i gotta drag my ass to the damn theatre again. but not this one. it seemed, lacking somehow. but maybe i just need to see it.Just FYI: a dude hangs dong.
I'm also tired of every QT movie dropping the N word constantly. He clearly has issues.I get the feeling its more of a component of him thinking this super "edgy" and "bold" than any actual issues he has with minorities.
I agree. I don't think he's a straight up racist per se, but I think he's very titillated by having black and white characters throw the word around. And it can be powerful if used sparingly, but he stampedes toward it every chance he gets and it's tiresome.I don't think 'nigger' was said once during Death Proof, Inglourious, Four Rooms, or any Kill Bill movies. In Django it was "part of the time" and in Hateful they at least reference "they don't call them that anymore". I don't think he does it any worse than any other movies based in those times. It's a little jarring seeing it back in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Don't really think he's a racist.
Not exactly current but if you can handle subtitles then I recommend "Wild Tales" highly.that was great!
Rented Sicario this week. Did not like. Explain what the appeal of this movie was supposed to be? It was choppy, annoying, and was just all-around bad.
Amy comes to Netflix in February. I'm waiting for that one.
. Simply love watching movies about people working.do you work vicariously though others
I keep meaning to watch Amy but never feel like it when it's choosin' time. Same with "I Am Chris Farley".
I did watch The Big Short last night. It was good! I thought it did a pretty good job explaining what was happening as it went along. That said, I've read several books about the 2008 crash and feel like I have a pretty good grasp of what happened, and yet I was lost a couple times when it would get into the deep details.
I also didn't always understand who the characters were, or who they worked for, or if they represented the banks or investing arms or whatever. I spent the first half thinking Steve Carrell's character was with the SEC or some watchdog group.
Not exactly current but if you can handle subtitles then I recommend "Wild Tales" highly.that was great!
2014 nom for best foreign film
Sicario was fantastically shot. I thought all of the scenes of them driving and looking over the border and the quiet overhead shots of Mexico to the contrast of them on the ground were great. Thought the whole drive through the city was great and then everything leading up to and from the tunnel was great. Such an awesome and tense movie. Was really surprised it got snubbed by the Oscars.Rented Sicario this week. Did not like. Explain what the appeal of this movie was supposed to be? It was choppy, annoying, and was just all-around bad.

I did like this. First of all, I tend to like 'procedure' types of movies, where characters are depicted doing their job in a relatively realistic setting, i.e. not Mad Max or a superhero joint. I liked this for the glimpse it provided into the high echelon of law enforcement. Sure it was pumped up and dramatized, but what was depicted is not that far off from what really goes on.
I really liked the way it was filmed, and I thought the crossing-the-border traffic jam scene was incredible. After seeing a million high speed car chases in movies, this was an awesome contrast, but it was just as tense. I thought all of the main characters were interesting too. I also liked that it positioned one character as the primary 'hero' and yet the climax of the movie involves someone else entirely.
Another examples of a procedure movie I liked, for different but similar reasons, was Spotlight. Simply love watching movies about people working.
After watching it, my biggest question is which fortysomething Jewess has the best tits...SArah Silverman or Chelsea Handler? What do y'all think?hmm good question, but I've never seen either

And blah blah blah.well I can agree with you on that!
I deleted my post because it is pointless to argue or discuss certain things with certain people. We are different generations and I think that is enough for there to be a huge difference between what I think is acceptable, and what others think is acceptable.

Two good rules there. The Smackie corollary broken as she was under half your age plus seven, but since you've already looked at the mom and knew it couldn't last, give it a hearty go.

oh.. I don't watch horror movies.. but The Ring seemed pretty crazy.. they were showing it on one of those Chinatown buses like ten years ago...you were on a Chinatown bus that was showing a movie? What sort of most luxurious Chinatown bus ever did you take?!

Wow what a fucking huge loss for Hulu. Criterion collection is super crucial viewing. It honestly was the only reason I was paying for it. I hope this thing isn't a glitchy pile of crap and they spread out to Roku and some more devices ASAP.
I don't use Hulu, most of those channels have apps that let you watch more episodes of those shows for free.Exactly. I have cable and OnDemand. Hulu has by far the least original programming of the big three networks. Easy to drop if they lose Criterion.
Anyone have any netflix/amazon prime movies to recommend for scary movie October?Wanted to follow up on this! Tonight I've got "The Babadook", "Deathgasm" and "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" [all on Netflix I believe]
My local Alamo Drafthouse, is playing The Lost Boys on the big screen this Monday.Better now than when you're in the theater. If Peewee Herman can't overcome that stigma, what hope do us mere mortals have?
I just, came.

Hell or High Water. My favorite movie of 2016 so far.
Is Love Actually the ultimate chick flick? I mean its just love love love nonstop.. I could barely stand rewatching it...yes there is some funny stuff but its just too much...its just too sweet... or maybe I'm too sour..I think Chris Matthews disagrees (https://youtu.be/iEN2LgwSxR4) with you

Dogtooth was a little more than my wife could bear.Understandable.

You haven't seen any of Martin Scorsese's movies? There's some pretty good ones!
I haven't seen his other movies. Will check them out. He's one of my favorite directors. I suggest Gangs Of New York and Raging Bull. Then you can jump into the violent Taxi Driver [Gangs is probably one of his most violent movies though]. Then Goodfellas, Casino, & The Departed.
I also really liked Hidden Figures.

I absolutely love Wolf Of Wall Street too.
. . . and Emo Philips makes an appearance! His role in UHF makes the film.
Is 'Rock Dog' any good? I was thinking of taking the kids to a movie tonight.
Ok, cool.
I see just about every single kid movie that comes out.
'Sing' was pretty generic, but goddamn did I love those KPOP foxes. When they were dancing and singing "Ninja Re Bang Bang" by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, I almost died. Both my kids were frantically whispering "DAD THAT'S YOUR MUSIC!" (And yes, I know that Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a Japanese artist, don't @ me). I give it a 5.
Secret Life of Pets was also as generic and boring as the usual. I give it a 4. For some reason, I thought it was going to be pretty good so I invited my parents to come too. We all thought it was mediocre.
Batman Lego Movie, however, was fucking hilarious. Seriously, I haven't laughed so much in a movie in years. 8/10
I thought Zootopia was a step above most kids cartoon movies, as it had an actual plot, suspense, and some interesting ideas about identity. 6/10
I'm guessing Relaxer's kids got the Jenna Jameson Essential Gold Collection as a christening gift.
I think the kids movie preferences depend also on your personal sensibilities. The Lego Batman movie is slightly more over the top than the Lego Movie and the original Lego Movie is better but honestly they are both laugh riots. I did NOT want to see the Lego Movie at all and my friend convinced me and I thought it was one of the funnier movies of that year. Lego Batman movie is more of a movie for Batman fans than fans of the Lego Movie. Still very, very funny. Will Arnett has climbed the ranks as one of my favorite Batman...s..? Lol
The Batman Lego Movie (and for that matter the Lego Movie itself) trailers just seem loud, obnoxious and over the top. I can not stand those types of in your face movies, be they animated or with real people. And neither can my quiet, mild-mannered Studio Ghibli loving daughter, who curses me out anytime I play my rock music too loud.
But I can totally see how a wild and crazy guy like Relaxer, and his presumably chip off the old block two sons would love that kind of movie.
Here's my finalized top 10 from 2016:
(1) Toni Erdmann
(2) Paterson
(3) Certain Women
(4) The Lobster
(5) Moonlight
(6) Manchester By The Sea
(7) The Handmaiden
(8) Love & Friendship
(9) Gimme Fiction
(10) La La Land
Whoops, weird Freudian slip; I am listening to Spoon. Meant to say Gimme Danger, Jim Jarmusch's Stooges doc. Here's my finalized top 10 from 2016:

As I get older and blinder, my tolerance for subtitles goes down. But Elle was totally worth putting up with subtitles for.I liked Elle.

and such a sad tale, but glad that the ashtons and James Williamson got a nice coda before dying
and iggy is still standing...
Paterson was the closest Jarmusch has come to Stranger than Paradise, technique wise, especially in regard to the pacing, relationship of the lead male/female characters and use of blackouts between scenes.... Loved the dog!heard that the dog won the "palm d'og" award, which is actually a thing.

The 25 Best Films of the 21st Century (so far) (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/06/09/movies/the-25-best-films-of-the-21st-century.html)I watch arthouse cinema and I assure you that list is terrible. Million Dollar Baby #3? Oooooook...
I've only seen nine of them. I guess I lose my cinephile credentials.

Baby Driver as everything is awesome about this movie...Yeah, do not miss this one on the big screen if you are a fan of music & film.
I was a little disappointed with Baby Driver. The soundtrack and the way they weave music into the story was great. The car chases were good but the story never really goes anywhere. I didn't find either Jon Hamm or Kevin Spacey to be convincing villains. It's probably worth a trip to the theater, but as noted above, it won't make any "best of' lists. You've been here long enough to know this: any visual media that features music prominently will be rated two letter grades higher than it actually deserves by this board. We had a weekly discussion of Vinyl, for God's sake.

I've seen 12. Not sure how Wendy and Lucy made that list. Sweet movie, but not the best of the century, by any means.
just watched, arrival. damn, that is a great, great movie. slow at first, and then it sucks you in . . . by the end you are simply left mesmerized by the concept and way it was shot. And it passes, the, Bechdel test.

Watched mother! and Black Swan this weekend. I may need to hide in the corner tomorrow.I saw Mother! a couple nights ago and it definitely took me a couple days to process. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not but after a few days I think I want to see it again... That is one insane movie. I suggest everyone goes to see it. Every review I've read for it is wrong.......... I think.

I've seen 12 of the top 25 from the link below, where Mulholland Drive is the number 1 movie (and have seen 34 of the top 100).

I am also switching into horror movie gear! Will definitely be watching It Follows this year. Loved Babadook and We are who we are last year. Hope to get to the Invitation this year. The Invitation is a crazy slow burner and plays it super close to the vest almost until the very end. I caught Green Inferno [Eli Roth] and it was absolutely horrible. The gore may have been even too much if it was supposed to be a camp horror... I just did not understand it. Also watched Creep and that was very odd... A super fun "found footage" type. Surprised to see they're making a sequel with the same killer in it. The ending is awesome.
Anyone else have other suggestions?
Switching into horror movie gear. Watched It Follows and Hush last night. It Follows was a great throwback horror, Hush was heart pounding! I felt exhausted watching those 2 back to back.
Tonight I'll finally FINALLY see The Babadook and I think The Invitation.
Has anyone see Raw or The Lure!? They both sound so good!
Given its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and 94 Metacritic score, I was expecting Lady Bird to blow me away. It didn't, but it was still very good.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is better, IMHO.
Since I don'tfor shame...

Cannot wait to see Three Billboards. Totally agreed about Lady Bird. Thought the acting was great but the story was disjointed and the whole narrative felt challenging and wildly uneven.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is better, IMHO.
Harry Dean Stanton's last film Lucky is tremendous. An existential tour de force about growing old and facing death. David Lynch, whose beside himself because of his lost tortoise, plays a regular in a bar that Stanton's character frequents.
I thought former professional wrestler dwayne johnson was the highest paid actor
Johnson is box office viagra.
Wahlberg sucks. He is a real piece of human garbage. Check out his history of racism and assaulting children by throwing rocks at them while he was a teenager.
Personally I do not watch his movies for the reasons above.
I think I am one of the few people who simply isn't a fan of Spielberg films. I find them formulaic and utterly predictable.
I also really liked I, Tonya. No chance of winning Best Picture, but Allison Janney is certainly a strong contender for Best Supporting.
I'll be skipping The Post. I think I am one of the few people who simply isn't a fan of Spielberg films. I find them formulaic and utterly predictable.

ditto
I Am Not Your Negro is an excellent documentary about Evers, King and Malcolm X through the eyes of the eloquent James Baldwin (voice by Samuel L. Jackson). The perfect film to watch yesterday or any day for that matter. Found it on Amazon. EVERYONE needs to see this film.
I'm watching Shape of Water as I type this and I'm wondering how the hell did this stinker win Best Picture?
Unlike all the other Oscar categories, Best Picture uses ranked, instant runoff voting to pick a winner. In theory, Shape of Water could have won without getting any first place votes.Yeah, that system is really weird. I wonder how many of the voters vote dishonestly trying to rig it.
^ so what's the over/under on super troopers 2?Well...it's out today

such a classic, might be best to let it die young with a pretty corpse
Won't You Be My Neighbor is incredible.
I'll leave it to my wife to explain all the blow job references, she likes explaining that stuff anyway, and what girl wants her dad explaining what blow jobs are to her?So you're saying your daughter doesn't even have the first clue what a blowjob is? Hopefully you took the opportunity to ask her what she thought it was so you could report back her quirky, iconoclastic answer!
space . . . and blowjobs, go together like, bullets and guns.
Juliet Naked is no great shakes but is an enjoyable 90 minutes.

Preach.
Isn't oral sex really the best reason in the world to be alive?
(and please let's not go for the obvious homophobic jokes)Don’t you dare try and stifle my free expression.
Take it from Freely, Free Solo is the best movie of the year. If it doesn't win the Oscar for Best Documentary, they should quit giving out the award.another han solo star wars spin off...didn't the first one bomb
Not for the weak-hearted/stomached but I just saw A Prayer Before Dawn about a British guy that gets thrown into a Thai prison and has to fight his way out. It is among the most intense and visceral movies I've ever seen. The depictions and visuals of male bodies are unreal (and please let's not go for the obvious homophobic jokes) and I am in awe of the director being able to set up some of the shots.
HALLOWEEN is great. Most fun i've head in a theater all year.

Top Gun: Maverick is an upcoming American military action drama film
It is the sequel to Top Gun (1986), intended to be the second installment in the Top Gun film series, and stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm and Ed Harris among others. It will be released on June 26, 2020
Cast
Tom Cruise as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a flight instructor
Miles Teller as Bradley Bradshaw, a pilot trainee, and the son of Maverick's late partner Nick "Goose" Bradshaw
Val Kilmer as Commander Tom "Iceman" Kazansky
After Tony Scott's suicide, the sequel's future remained in question. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer remained committed to the project, especially given Cruise's and Kilmer's interest.
so if this does well...is the 3rd installment the Iceman Cometh
Not so fast there...Surely a good career move IMO

I love Wong Kar-wai's Chunking express (#56), but I'll have to watch ITMFL (#9) again as I can't remember it being a memorable movie?
Never even heard of Happy Together 1997 Lai and his boyfriend, Ho, arrive in Argentina from Hong Kong, seeking a better life.

I was shocked to learn that Alex is still with that insufferable girlfriend.
How about the people’s choice awards hatch? You into that too?no... that is about as good as the MTV awards
Sorry to Bother You was really good.
Sorry to Bother You was really good.
I retract my statement from October regarding Halloween being the most fun I've had in a theater this year. That award goes to Sorry To Bother You. Wish more people had caught it.

Riveting performance Seth! Excellent film. Is that Tarantino knocking on your door?
Golden Globe nominations….yes, Bohemian Rhapsody was entertaining….but best drama? Really? It got a 49 on metacritic…

this could be amazing...or suck
Jim Jarmusch is releasing a zombie film called The Dead Don't Die, and the cast includes Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Bill Murray, Adam Driver, and Tilda Swinton 😱
the new Tarantino looks like a blast:it does...looking forward to it
the new Tarantino looks like a blast:I caught an 11pm screening of "Us". No interest in seeing it again actually. But there are definitely enough perfect spooky parts. Possibly a little too overwrought for its own good, giving plenty of watercooler fodder. And.... a very nice scriptwriting/cinematic aha payoff towards the very end.

Count me in. The cast is ridiculous and Jarmusch is more hit than miss.
This isn't necessarily breaking news, but I just noticed that "Salad Days" is available to stream for free on Amazon Prime video.

Claudio Miranda's cinematography looks absolutely gorgeous. May be enough to get me in a theater for this unnecessary sequel.

. Now that summer concert season is about overLike the exact opposite for me as late sept/oct/nov has too many shows and I've only seen 2-3 the whole summer
You're right, what am I talking about? I've got almost as much lined up as I did in June, July and August.. Now that summer concert season is about overLike the exact opposite for me as late sept/oct/nov has too many shows and I've only seen 2-3 the whole summer
Don't you guys ever get tired of going to so many shows?Maybe a big one once a month, but mainly area artists here and there at interesting venues like record stores, so not really. Got a few free tickets for Jiffy Lube which is about 15 minutes away, so I rarely say no to those. At my age it's all about the weather and the parking situation.

I want to see The Goldfinch this weekend but I feel there's no way a 2.5 hour movie can possible do that novel justice. Early reviews are so bad.the Onion A/V trashed it hard

As a guy with a pair of balls, rom-coms aren't usually my top genre (though preferred over superhero or horror movies), but these two were quite enjoyable:
Always Be My Maybe (streaming on Netflix, great Keanu Reeves cameo and closing credits song)
Long Shot (Come on, this may be the most appropriate titled movie ever)
As a guy with a pair of ballsSo are we supposed to believe that guys with 1 testicle enjoy rom-coms more than the dual endowed?
Ad Astra. Apocalypse Now in space. Recommend.
The two girls were the opposite of eye candy
The Last Black Man in San Francisco
One of my favorite films of 2019, so far.
Great cameo by Jello Biafra. Totally knew that it was him two seconds after he opened his mouth.

The Addams Family movie was hilarious.
One of the top tier kid's (not sure I would call this a kid movie) cartoons I've seen over the past five years.
The Dora the Explorer movie was way, way, way better than I would have guessed it would be. Seriously.

For the record, the Dora movie stands on it's own as a good Bill and Ted meets Indiana Jones flick regardless of whether you've seen the kid's show. Though having seen the kid's show only makes it better.
Not every moment of life has to be lived in a Nick Cave world.

Perhaps less surprising than Billie Eilish's inability to know Van Halen, but I have never seem a Nickelodeon special. Are there some you can recommend?
Pleasantly surprised to see musicians from two of my favorite bands with roles in Marriage Story- Dean from Luna and Tunde from TVOTR!
Saw 2 good older movies (2017/18?) - Ladybird and The Florida Project
Parasite was fantastic. Streaming on Amazon for $6.
Once Upon A Time was alright.....not sure why it was even nominated. You don't even wanna see it again the second time like most Tarantino films.

For some reason for years the only way to get any of these masterpieces was on an overpriced DVD (haven't had a player for a decade) or wait until they did some of those special screenings at movie theaters
Some real rare gems in there too
are you kidding me...I didn't know, was going to start watching them tonightPeople who care about this stuff buy a VPN for like 39.99/year and change what country it appears they are in so they can watch the (often much more robust) selections on foreign Netflix.

I don't really think this is against the law, per se. VPNs are legal. Probably/definitely a violation of a Terms of Service/Use but I don't think this is a criminal matter. is IX really needed? maybe the wounds will heal and i'll be able to revisit in a year, but my current opinion is that Rise brings the whole franchise down. it's better off without it.

You're the kind of guy that leaves a sporting event early after watching 95% of it just because your team might not win, aren't you?

nope. but i am the kind of guy who would walk out of a show if it really, really stinks and i'm not enjoying myself. i would also warn others that the show stinks and is best avoided - even if previous editions/episodes/incarnations were excellent.

I am literally watching Big Lebowski for the first time. This is a great movie.Wow! This is one of the most rewatchable films of all-time. Put this on in the background and I'm very happy.
I feel I have a deeper understanding of y'all. That's just, like, your opinion, man.
Quite possibly the best comedy in the last 3 decades...Clueless, Mean Girls, Bridesmaids, Office Space, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Zoolander, American Pie.
what would be other contenders??
Don't the majority of those picks predate BL?You literally said "last 3 decades" in the post we are all responding to. Moving the goalposts.
I do agree with most of them tho...Just feel like comedy movies have kinda sucked for the last 2 decades
Agree it is one of the most rewatchable films ever. Sublime comedy, imo.Clerks is definitely up there. Hell, I have a weird affinity to Mallrats too.
I’d add Clerks, Swingers, Something About Mary, Wedding Crashers to the discussion. Maybe even Dumb/Dumber, Superbad, Shaun of the Dead. A lot of contenders, for sure.

Movie - Year - Sidehatch ratingLook, if you're going to do this, don't be lazy: use the Pitchfork tenth-of-a-point scale, not just integers.

Only Rushmore and Dazed and Confused come to mind as out and out modern classics of the comedy genre along with Big Lebowski but I may be forgetting a few and haven’t seen all

Dude, you have some good beer taste. But I'd put most of those movies on a list of worst movies I've ever seen.
Any The Stöned Age fans?

I didn't think Daddy's Home was that funny
never seen Blockers, but it looked like it might be good
is it me or does this sound like an epic train wreck in the making
Greta Gerwig will next collaborate with Noah Baumbach in co-writing and potentially directing a live-action Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie in the title role.

I know those two are supposed to be critical darlings, but I haven't liked a single film either of them have made.

I had read originally Amy Shumer was to play the role and it was going the #2 route
but now that hottie Margot is in it, not sure that works

Haven't see that doc yet
The Hunt for the Wilderpeople. On Netflix. Same director as did Jojo Rabbit, and What We Do in the Shadows. Also documentary on HBO called Class Action Park, about a water park in NJ in the 1980s is excellent; especially for us older guys who grew up without the parental/adult supervision we see today.
I may have said this before but Nomadland is a tour de force.

first cowThis was great. Love Kelly Reichart. Certain Women was my favorite film from . . . whatever year it came out.
My son asks what the other three you saw are?
Apparently Nomadland is the overwhelming favorite
I rewatched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the first time in decades... I think I have seen bits and pieces over the years
Some of it has dated badly.. not PC... on the other hand it is sort of a reflection of wasp culture and that’s the way it was..
Still very very funny though...Charlie Sheen is so good in his role
I can remember seeing this as a 15 year old at the movie theater around Menlo Park and just loving it so much...

Read the Times’ review on this and was kinda discouraged. Sounds like a really good topic but it could have been handled better. Some of the folks included in the film have since disavowed it.

Has anybody seen a movie called A Field in England?
I just watched the trailer and I am pretty sure I was on drugs even though I wasn't.
I saw a movie called “Everything is illuminated” last night
One of the main actors - and I didn’t recognize him - was Eugene Hutz from Gogol Bordello! He was fantastic
Excellent movie excellent performances
The subject matter made me a bit sad...

it's not bothsidism, which i also despise. it's the belief that the ends justify the means that gets to me. we get all up in arms when the other side does it but somehow tolerate it when our side does it... i can't abide by that, nor its consequences. i see a lot of equivalency between folks ready to swallow seaspiracy because they're pro-environmentalism so damn the details; and folks on the right who don't truly believe trump's Big Lie but are willing to go along with it because it is in general alignment with their beliefs.
If it’s mostly right not sure what the big problem is... or why you discredit it
I am tired of this bothsidesism
Yeah not a big fan of Michael Moore for that reason
Tonight I might watch the queen’s gambit
Well the Oscars were last night. I thought they were going a little overboard with the wokeness factor, but then they gave the big acting awards to two old white people, and the documentary to a white guy and his octopus, so it all kind of evened out. J. Phoenix followed up his great winner's speech from last year with the most phoned in presenter's speech ever.
And someone please give Glenn Close an Oscar for anything.

Wait. So recognizing women, people of color and other minorities is only a result of being "woke", and not because they've actually, y'know, accomplished something worthy? And only old white men are actually worthy of winning?
Tonight I might watch the queen’s gambitThe first episode is a lot of exposition and setting up of pieces (hey! Like Chess!) and pretty dull but the five episodes after that are straight fire. Highly recommend.
What I would say is:Depends what you mean by woke. If you're implying they were nominating lesser performances by AA actors because of some social policy, I'd likely disagree. This was a weird year with less films released (and less big budget films overall because of COVID which tend to still have majority white casts -- a real lingering issue) so perhaps that is why.
For example, when three out of five best supporting actor nominees are black, and the industry they work in is heavily white, and the measure of one's performance is completely subjective, yeah, that seems a little bit woke, doesn't it?
Scared to look up this Bob O guy...
Maybe I should get into acting.. I could be that token Latino that can never gets any parts cause there are so few Latino roles
My first exposure to The Sparks was that truly forgettable movie Rollercoaster (1977) and I was a bit creeped out by their image. Never really got it to them, but their cult following is strong and I can take them in small doses now. And honestly the FFS project resonates more with with me than straight up Sparks.
Going to see the new Conjuring movie tomorrow. Hope it is good!! Watched the first Insidious movie last night. FUCK, that is a great film!! That ending! I am felling fully, possessed.
The last thing we need is a whole board of possessed people. How the hell would you know what we do or do not need? You’re getting awful big for your britches.
Or do we?
if you're gonn...grbh... grrrgh... ARRRGRRRUHHare these the tell-tale signs of demonic possession?
"Nobody," streaming in Prime.
I love Bob Odenkirk and plan on watching this movie at some point, but I want to say that I would pay money to see 9:30 Forum Hutch play this role.
Summary: When two thieves break into his suburban home one night, Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent serious violence. His teenage son, Blake (Gage Munroe), is disappointed in him and his wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen), seems to pull only further away. The aftermath of the incident strikes a match to Hutch’s long-simmering rage, triggering dormant instincts and propelling him on a brutal path that will surface dark secrets and lethal skills. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must save his family from a dangerous adversary (Aleksey Serebryakov)—and ensure that he will never be underestimated as a nobody again.
add to the chorus of Summer of Soul being a must see, it's amazing and the highlight is probably Nina Simone's appearance..
one interesting tidbit was the very end after the credits, Stevie Wonder is seen with a member of his band and i was thinking he looks familiar... someone did the research and it turns it was Gene Key who was his musical director at the time... Gene was a friend of my parents and a well respected arranger.

theory: space was about to ask for details about identifying the fidelity of his TV, but his wife - always looking over his oppressed shoulders - didn't like that line of questioning as it might result in non-essential spending. thus, she took him mid-sentence him before he could ask something like "the tv has a big sticker in back with a lot of numbers on it, is that where i looks to find out if i have hdtv?" someone should probably go check on him...

i have a DVD player than can be hooked up to the TV (but currently isn't). the only other disk-reader under my roof is a DVD burner in a desktop that i built in 2004 for music production. it runs windows XP, has never been online, and hasn't been booted up for at least 5 years. all this to say that if you gave me a CD or DVD i could play it, but i'd be grumpy about it. i think that puts me half-way between jules and vansmack.

I know my wife really wishes I'd get rid of all of my CD's that clutter up the view in our living room, but i just can't.
The Velvet Underground. Really enjoyed this one.
For some reason I had never watched the Filth and the Fury, and I watched that one as well. Also really good.
Watched the Sparks doc on Netflix and while it’s well done, I’m still ambivalent about them. Don’t get me wrong they have written some great singles, but I can take or leave much of their catalog.
Also watched “Count Me In” which was also good, but kinda made me want to just see a full doc focused on jazz drummers.

My wife and I both really loved "C'mon, C'mon." It was criminal that it received no Oscar nominations. And sadly, it doesn't seem to be on any streaming services? Thank goodness we still have the Netflix dvd subscription.

been hearing good things about this...anyone seen itThought it was spectacular. Cate Blanchett should get best actress for it. Hopeful it wins a writing award too as I bet Fields gets overlooked for Directing and the film turns into an also-ran for Best Picture.

Pearl - Mia Goth deserves an Oscar nod for her performance. It's a prequel to X (which is currently streaming on Showtime). While X is a great straight-up slasher film, Pearl is more psychological thriller but they're both great flicks.

The Banshees of Ed Sheeran (HBO) is as good as they say.I didn’t get this. It wasn’t bad but it seemed like it very much was dedicated to hamfisting an Irish Civil War metaphor into its plot, in which, honestly really nothing happens for 105 minutes.

Goth's 9-minute monologue alone makes her worthy of a nomination. While i love a good slasher flick and X delivers, Pearl is a superior technicolor nightmare. Can't wait for Maxxxine, which Goth just claimed has the best script of the trilogy.

Yep, I was glued to the screen the entire time she delivered that. Just a masterclass in acting. Between that and the final scene she really deserves some recognition!
Pearl was one of my favorite movies of the year. It may have been the only one I watched twice.I just watched the trailer and am already having nightmares

Wakanda Forever, was the biggest pile of Marvel shit I have ever seen. The worst. Wow. Were people just pretending to like it because of the death? Even the way they killed him off in the beginning was bullshit.
Boo, this movie.
Which one to watch first on Netflix this weekend. It's going to be a hard decision. A German comedy called "Hard Feelings" in which teen's genitals start talking to them, or a Swedish comedy called "The Year I Started Masturbating."
I think genitals speaking in German probably wins.
RealityIll just wait for someone to clip the Sydney Sweeney topless scenes and post them online.
Streaming on Max.
Wouldn't be surprised if this picked up a nomination or two.
RealityJust watched this. I thought it was merely ok. Halfway through I said “this feels like it would be better as a play than a movie.” Then three-quarters of the way through I wikipediaed it because it was losing my attention and, lo, and behold, it’s an adaptation of a play.

As usual, the only time I get to see movies are typically on a flight. So I haven't seen it, but WA movies are not ordinary movies
As a huge fan of Wes Anderson, I was incredibly bummed that I couldn't even get through 30 minutes of "Asteroid City."
Utterly terrible.

I’m a long time Wes Anderson fan but I gotta say his last two films lost me a bit. I do think the “story within a story” element of their plots is part of it.
I think a framed narrative, on its own, is not a problem. That exists in many great movies. The fact that they kept pulling us out of it so dramatically for an ever expanding cast of characters we don't have any reason to care about is the problem.I’m a long time Wes Anderson fan but I gotta say his last two films lost me a bit. Does anybody like that kind of plot element?
In French Dispatch, it just seems like a way to take 3 short films and call them one conclusive whole. We do not care about anyone who works at that publication. There are no stakes. We are not given enough time with them to understand why we should care about themthat is an accurate take, I really didn't care for anyone in the FD...don't even think I finished watching
In a movie theater?

I’m watching the Netflix documentary about the making of We are the World that just came out.
On the car ride home, I was telling my daughter about it. There was one part where Paul Simon looked up to Kenny Loggins and said “If they dropped a bomb on this place, John Denver would be right back on top,” I told this story to my daughter and she said, “The only name I recognize in that story is Obama. Is this song famous or something?”
Then there was another story where Ray Charles needed to use the bathroom and Stevie Wonder showed him where it was and someone said “”It was the blind leading the blind.” And my daughter asked “Wait, Stevie Wonder is blind?"

Has anyone here seen Hundreds of Beavers?I thought it was a lot of fun and such a unique style. Obviously apes a lot from video games.
Watched it over the holidays and whiles it's a little long for what it is (an early 20th century silent slapstick), it was enjoyable escapism.
It's weird, silly (and again maybe a little long) and relatively low budget, but it was a welcome diversion from life's BS.

can confirm.
snuck out on the family and caught it in imax tonight. this zep-head loved it. despite being very familiar with the band's history, i learned plenty. what i enjoyed the most was hearing the band's account of their rise to success. they used some really slick editing to ensure that today's attention-deficit-afflicted watcher isn't incombered with a 12-minute "moby dick" drum solo.
only complaint: as a member of the "i picked up the guitar because of jimmy page" club, i had issues with the sync'ing of the audio and the video. too many instances of the audio being a searing lead, clearly in the upper frets; while the video showed page playing cowboy chords (aka at the top of the neck). or vice-versa. happened with the drums too, but not surprisingly they always got robert & the vocals aligned with the video. hey production team: invite a guitar player into the editing suite next time. will work for beer.I'm in for the sequel if they ever make it.
same. i'm more of a mid-period zeppelin guy, so if the next in the series covers anything between III and Presence, i'll be a happy camper. The imax audio was stellar.
hearing zep in that theater vividly reminded me that i lack a proper stereo system at home and need to remedy that ASAP.

Yeah. I give more than $2500/year to the Richmond Symphony just to have access to a donor lounge where I can pay $14 for a vodka soda. If I lived in DC, the value I would get out of a $2500/year pass to an arthouse theatre would be astronomical.
